Kansas-El Dorado-

El Dorado Times December 16, 2009

"We’ve seen an increase of animals in shelters because many people don’t have the money to take care of their pets,” said Kathy Daily, registered veterinary technician at El Dorado Animal Clinic.

"She decided to take the steps necessary to fill the need of a pet food bank here in El Dorado.
Daily contacted the Salvation Army and Captain Rick Hamelund agreed the need was there and decided to help Daily manifest her plan.

"All veterinary clinics in the area have agreed to participate are now taking donations.

"Smaller sacks of dry food and canned wet food are items suggested for donation. Locations will also be accepting cash donations.

"The Salvation Army will be handling storage and distribution for the project.

"Daily wants to see the pet food bank continue throughout the year and has first hand experience in how the economy can affect pets.

"Donations may be made to local veterinary clinics or taken directly to the Salvation Army office at 141 N. Gordy.

"Participating Veterinary Clinics:

El Dorado Animal Clinic, 111 E. Locust

Bluestem Animal Clinic, 830 W. 6th Street

Animal Care Center, 1440 W. 6th.

Janice Bigelow, 4946 S.E. Cole Creek Rd.

"For more information contact Daily at the El Dorado Animal Clinic at 321-1050."

"Many folks are familiar with CAART -- Capital Area Animal Response Team -- as the group that helps animals in emergency situations. Now, people who can care for their animals, but may be having trouble finding money for pet food, have a new place to turn.

“"To have to give up a pet, because groceries are so expensive and its hard to provide for the family, let alone provide for a pet, owners are having to make a really difficult choice,” CAART Executive Director Julie Castaneda said. “We wanted to help with that.”

"“All they need to do is call us,” she said. “In fact, I'll be answering the phones, so they can call me directly. And there are a few qualifiers, but then again, we're not going to turn anybody away. We're going to help people with pet food.”

"If you'd like to make a donation, you can mail it to CAART, c/o Topeka Community Foundation, 5431 SW 29th St, Suite 300, Topeka, KS 66614.
For donations to the pet food pantry, write “pet food” in the check’s memo line. Otherwise, the money will go into CAART’s general fund.

"If you want to receive help from the pet food pantry, call (785) 925-3678."
