Got a cat bite at the shelter on Wednesday
« on: July 21, 2017, 05:36:57 AM »
Wondering if any one here has had this kind of experience. This cat is a sweetheart and I don't understand what happened, he was his usual rubbing his head on my hands while I pulled out the dishes and litter box. I put the fresh food and water on the right side of the cage and he was sitting there but when I slipped the clean litter box into the left side he lunged and bit me very hard and then he hissed. Never heard him hiss before and it was a bad bite leaving several teeth marks in my arm. I had been working alone in holding but I immediately found a staff member and reported it.

He had been down to the hospital in Boston the Friday before for some kind of tests so I wondered if someone there hurt him while he being tested and he had some kind of flashback. I can't remember if he was a stray or surrender but he had to be shaved so must have had mats. I can't remember his age but not young.

I still have the bite marks but they didn't get infected though the first night they were ugly and raised and I thought I was going to have to to the doctor. Seemed fine by morning so I dodged that bullet.

Anyway sorry for such a long post but wondered if anyone had any thoughts?

With it happening soon after a vet visit ,you are probably correct that he remembered & was scared . Someone had to reach into his cage to transfer him to a carrier & the vet tech had to reach in to get him out. Maybe a warning about changing things while he is not distracted would help . He will probably calm down about it after a few weeks. In the interim, maybe a wand toy while working on his things ?
