Title: Update on Chami
Post by: August on August 16, 2019, 08:28:29 PM
Hi there,

Please let me apologize for posting and then suddenly dropping out of site.  For four days the assumption was that Chami had lymphoma.  I wasn't handling it well at all.  To be honest, Chami was suddenly in such bad shape that I didn't know (two weeks ago) if she would even make it through that weekend.  The day I posted about SubQs was right after taking Chami back to see a different doctor who did some tests and found that Chami had a UTI, periodontal disease and blood levels very similar to kidney disease - and that it might not be lymphoma after all.

Now, I realize being told your baby has a UTI, periodontal disease and possibly kidney disease is not exactly good news, but I was just so elated there was a good chance it wasn't lymphoma, I had about 24 hours of pure happiness... and that is when I found the excellent instructional video series on how to medicate your cat and posted.

Of course right after that, reality set in and I became a total basket case.  I don't know - I found myself researching and having anxiety attacks and anything I would read would completely overwhelm me.  And so for my sanity, I decided I had to take a step back and just focus on getting Chami enough food and getting in her SubQs properly.  I've really been a mess.

Thank you, Alex, for posting that update for me.  I had been worrying about my Itchmo family and just leaving my post unanswered but just didn't have the energy or clarity of mind to post.

Okay.  Drama finished.   :P

While I have lost a bunch of weight  :P and haven't slept well for two weeks  ::)  , Chami has been responding wonderfully to the SubQ.  Even with the amount of fluids I'm giving her, she's still drinking an unusual amount of water.  Nevertheless, she's peeing (a ton) and pooping (well), she has a good appetite, and best of all, she is acting her usual silly self.  It's so awesome.

Chami and I went to the clinic today to get another round of blood tests done.

Two weeks ago vs today:

Weight 7.67 pounds --> 8.38 pounds
CREA    5.1 --> 2.0 (.8~2.4 is normal range)
BUN     63 --> 40 (16-36 is normal range)

The doctor was happy to see Chami looking sooooo much better (like, night and day better to me).  There was no more bad bacteria in her urine test but to be safe, gave her another antibiotic shot (the ones that last 2 weeks).  I am to continue giving her 90 ml of fluid morning and night for the next 2 weeks.  I asked about getting a heart function blood test done and the doctor said that he felt Chami's heart sounded strong and well and didn't feel it was needed.

In two weeks Cham and I will go back to the clinic for another round of blood tests and also an X-ray to compare it to the one she got two weeks ago (the one that showed her stomach and intestines filled so full of air that they were 4x the size they should be - the one that resembled lymphoma).

I'll probably need to stay away from cat-related forums and sites to allow myself to function semi-properly.   :P  Is it my age?  Good grief, man.  I am exhausted.    :-\

Thank you for keeping Chamster in your thoughts and I'll be sure to come back in 2 weeks to update.

Okay, going to go take a nap now.   :D

Big (((hugs))) for you and Chami. I am so glad she is doing so much better. Don’t worry about posting. Your baby is sick and that’s more important. Just try not to get overwhelmed ( I know that’s the hard part)!  :-* :-*for Chami

I’m so glad Chami is doing better! I feel you on the whole bit about reading and getting overwhelmed by what’s online and getting swamped by stuff. [also learned the hard way that trying to get by on 4 hours of sleep does not go well for my sanity or coherence  ...  :P :D ] Just focus on taking care of yourself and Chami! Don’t ever worry about posting—you know we are always sending you love and hugs and will be telling you to get more sleep or kitty lovin’ time instead.  :) :-*

   "I am exhausted."  Yeah, I know that feeling too well.  I'm so glad that Chami is doing better, and I hope things have settled down for you, too.  I get nervous stomach and anxiety just when Kozy has a hairball, lol, so I totally understand what you're talking about.  Big hugs, deep breaths!   :-*

Thank you guys.

Now that Chami's been on SubQs for the past nearly 3 weeks, you would never know anything is wrong with her.  Seriously.  She looks and acts like her usual self.

I am finally starting to live in the present and have been able to eat and sleep better  :P  .  Boy, anything extra though takes me to Overwhelm City.  I thought I'd leave the carrier out in the room so that Chami could get used to seeing it since she'll have to be in it again next Saturday - I knew she'd be scared of it and avoid it at all costs... and what does she do but sleep in it.   :D

What do I know about cats.   ::)

Great she is feeling better. Not surprised about the carrier, I keep all my carriers out to be used as beds and they all love sleeping in them. It really helps with putting them in the carrier if I need to take them to the vet.

So glad the Chamster is doing better. It’s funny she goes to sleep in the carrier! That’s a great idea.

I took Chami for her checkup yesterday.

The day before yesterday, someone peed on the carrier that I'd left out.   :D :D :D  Those smartypants cats.

Chami is doing fantastic.  She obviously feels very good - very spunky and energetic, and she has a good appetite.  The doctor was happy to see her looking so well.  The 90ml morning and night seem to be a good amount for her.  He gave a physical and since her tummy motion felt really good and she was not constipated at all (since a kitten, she has the tendency to be constipated) he felt an X-ray was not needed.

Weight 7.67 pounds --> 8.38 pounds  -->  8.47 pounds
CREA    5.1 --> 2.0 --> 1.8 (.8~2.4 is normal range)
BUN     63 --> 40 --> 47 (16-36 is normal range)

Although her BUN reading went up slightly, he wasn't worried about it and said there would be small waves like this.  (On a side note, I read online that cats who eat a raw diet can have higher BUN readings.)

So ultimately, the doctor feels that Chami likely does have kidney disease but that at this time it is fully under control.  I'll continue doing as I've been doing and take her in for another checkup in a month.

I feel really relieved and so happy to see Chami acting like such a goofbutt, scrambling all over the cat tower as I jokingly swat at her flanks.   :-*

Yay for goofbutt! How did the kitties do with the typhoon?

Title: Re: Update on Chami

The typhoon was CRAZY!  It woke me up around 1am and it was like every single window of the house was being simultaneously hit by a firehose.  The zoo was awake and Fri was saying stuff like "What's going on?" and "Uhh, what's going onnnnn?"  I could feel the house slightly swaying from the strong winds - it was totally wild!

Chami is doing great.  I've changed the feeding routine to 4 times a day (instead of 3) and this has actually been very good for everybody (except for maybe me  :D ).  Anyway, all is good and stable over here (including me  :)  ).

Chami and I went for her 1 month checkup today.

Her CREA is in the normal range, and her BUN is only a bit high, and she's gained a bunch more weight.  The doctor was surprised and pleased.

Me, too.   :-*

I've actually not seen Chami looking so happy and upbeat and acting this goofy in a long time - I'd assumed her more tranquil vibe was due to her being older... but man was I wrong.

I'm to continue giving Chami 90 ml in the morning and 90 ml again at night, and we'll go see the doctor again in a month.

Hello there!

Chami is doing crazy-great.  Like, she hasn't been this playful and happy in years, maybe.  I'd thought she was a lot more chill these years because of her age or because of moving to this house but I was wrong.  She's now acting like her goofy self from years ago... it's amazing.

I take Chami for her next checkup next Monday.  Her numbers were so great at the end of November, the doctor said we could skip December's visit, so we happily took that suggestion!   ;D

I can't remember if I wrote this last year or not but just when Chami got sick is around the time I found out that all the freeze-dried raw foods I'd been importing in from Hong Kong were now unavailable to me due to tighter Japan restrictions.  I was FRANTIC.  Seriously you guys.  How did I survive that?   ;)

We have now successfully transitioned to defrosted frozen raw that is made in Japan or imported to Japan from Australia.  Chami LOVES it (everyone else, too).  How lucky could I be?  She has regained all her lost weight and gained a bunch more (she was underweight to start with).

But in order to help her gain weight, I've made sort of a crazy-cat-lady-not-making-many-friends schedule for myself  :P  - I'm feeding the cats 4 times a day starting at 4am (starting at 4am so that I can feed them at 9:30am before I go to visit my mom at her assisted living Home).  Plus, I'm still giving Chami her SubQ every 12 hours, and I always hang out with her for 30 minutes (just her and myself in the restroom  :-* ) and play with her and give her massages before her shot.  Then of course I do play time and tummy rubs for all the other cats.  I'm exhausted from around 4pm. (sweat-laff icon).  But Chami is really doing so well I want to keep it up.   :)

So all is good over here.

So happy to hear that Chami is doing so well!  You are an outstanding kittymom, August.  They are so lucky to have you caring for them.

I hope your mom is thriving in her "home".  No doubt she enjoys your visits.

Great news about Chami ! Just try to get a little balance for some you time as well as caring for all of them . You won't be able to take of them if you exhaust yourself  :)

Hello there!

I just thought I'd give a quick update.

Chami (and all) are doing crazy great.  She had another checkup last week and her numbers are fantastic.

A couple weeks ago Chami requested using the 1st floor for her room so of course I’m letting her do that.  I set up my work room with all sorts of wonderful boxes and beds that she loves and now she and Lulu (who, after seeing the new setup, insisted to stay there, too) are the 1st floor cats (Sunday and Jazza are on the 2nd, and the boys and Fhizzy are on the 3rd - I do still do house swap so everyone can have a turn for the stairs and ex-garage room).

Anyway, since Chami moved to this room (aka moved away from being around Jazza ????), she’s been especially joyful, rolling around on her back and playing like she used to as a kitten, wiggling her butt and getting google-eyes when I take out Da Bird.   :D   It’s truly marvelous.  I'm sure not having the stress of being around Jazza is really good for Chami, and she can freely go to the bathroom without having to plan around where Jazza is at any given moment.

I'm still giving Chami 90 ml of SubQ both morning and night, and she's been a real champion about it.

Awww Chami  :-* What a good girl! I'm so happy she's is feeling good in her new surroundings. I get the cat who doesn't let another use the cat box in peace. Haboob simply terrorizes Stormy when she wants to go. She will come get me and lead me to the cat bathroom so I can let her in and keep Haboob out. Unfortunately I can't be there 24 hours a day and the other morning he wouldn't let her go so she had diarrhea in my bedroom. Such a lovely way to wake up.  ::)

Argh, those goobers.  I wish cats could come to an agreement to have at least the toilet area be off limits.   ::)

One thing I've found that kind of helps is to put a litter box on a table so whoever is using it has at least some time to figure out an exit should someone come in.   :P

So glad to hear that Chami is doing great!

When it comes to toilet terror, Leo always wants to closely inspect whatever is happening when someone uses the toilet, and since my cats use human toilets, sometimes he ends up with poop on his head. Doesn't stop him from looking again  ::)
