Hi everyone,

A vet friend shared this article, issued by Tufts Nutrition/Lisa Freeman, dvm, on November 29, 2018.  The nutritionist is extending the concern from the grain-free/taurine deficiency link to DCM to also include boutique companies and exotic ingredients.  She states "not all pet food manufacturers have the same level of nutritional expertise and quality control, and this variability could introduce potential issues with some products."

She also includes the point:  "Raw diets and homemade diets are not safe alternatives. ....  And raw and home-cooked diets increase your dog’s risk for many other health problems."   She does continue "If your dog requires a home-prepared diet for a medical condition or you feel strongly about feeding one, I strongly recommend you consult with a Board-Certified Veterinary NutritionistTM.  However, because home-cooked diets are not tested for safety and nutritional adequacy like good quality commercial diets, deficiencies could still develop."


I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the article.  The issue seems a little more clouded than when the information was initially released. 

I have my thoughts on home-prepared, but I would like to hear yours.

While I agree that its probably not just grain free food causing this , I disagree that sticking with a large pet food co is safer. Honestly I would not feed most of those to anyone . If you do research or check with a nutritionist , there is no reason to believe that raw or home cooked are not safer .
