Title: dog water fountain
Post by: lesliek on October 24, 2017, 05:50:26 AM
Does anyone know of a water fountain that puts up a stream or spout of water ? A friend of mine is a foster for a rescue & has a 6 month ? old puppy who cannot open his mouth properly . He has to put his nose into the water & keeps aspirating. It looks like someone kicked him & broke his jaw. He is going to a specialist at U Penn this week & we are hoping they can rebreak it & fix it. I solved the not being able to chew issue with small soft meatballs that he can pick up & swallow whole. Any suggestions would be welcome.

The only one I can think of is the Pioneer Pet Serenity Cat Fountain. Most of the usual ones have the falling water like the Drinkwell. I hope the puppy can get his jaw fixed. Poor thing.

You can get the little drink well hydrate and turn it in the bowl to face upwards.

Poor dog, hope he can have the problem fixed soon. What about those human drinking water stations, the water usually goes upward?

Expensive, but there are some on Etsy that push the water straight up -

I got the small drinkwell & propped on its side it works . If he can drink from it I will order the 1 from Etsy with a spout extender . I watched him try to drink yesterday & he can't swallow . It just runs back out of his mouth .
He had all his tests done Friday & sees the specialist Tuesday . My friend is hand feeding him & doing subq fluids.

I hope that the specialist can help this poor baby.  It sounds so sad that he cannot eat or drink properly.  I will keep him in my prayers.  Bless your friend, and you, for trying to help.

They use the big hanging bottles with spout for mega-e dogs so they don't regurgitate.  Like a big rabbit water bottle.  Maybe that might work?  I would get the kind with the roller ball, not the pin.

The fountain didn't help. Will try the hanging water bottle as well as feeding him sitting up in a car seat or child's chair, but it isn't looking good. They said it's the worst case of underdevelopment they have seen in years. He has very few teeth & his jaw , tongue & throat are malformed.Probably due to inbreeding at a puppy mill . There is a procedure they can try , but there are no guarantees it will work & they seem a little pessimistic about how much it will help. They said they don't know how he survived this long starving & dehydrated.
My friend is doing subq's daily & feeding him 1/4 can of food & meatballs hourly trying to get weight on him so he can grow & thrive .

Please say a prayer for puppy Derp. He went to the rainbow bridge today. My friend feels like she failed him, but what she did was show him love and attention. Unfortunately he was already so malnurnished & dehydrated that 3x daily subq's & feeding every 30 minutes around the clock could not stabilize him. He kept collapsing & even after spending most of today at the emergency hospital , he was failing. She said she could see in his eyes that he was just too tired to continue. She did the only thing there was left for him & he passed in her arms. It is just so wrong for a puppy to suffer like that and have no future. We are all understandably extremely upset. She buried him in her back yard where he loved to explore.

Leslie,
I am so sad to read this.  You and your friend were truly angels to try to do what you could to help this poor pup.  Your friend did not fail.  It was a situation that was, unfortunately, just beyond her control.  Rest in peace, sweet Angel Derp.  He is now whole and well at the Bridge, and looking down with gratefulness to those who tried to help.   :'(   :'(

Sorry to see that Leslie, your friend did everything possible. :'( So sad that people can be so cruel to a puppy. He had love from your friend and wasn't alone and sometimes that's all that can be done.

I am so sorry, poor little thing. But he did experience being loved and cared for before he passed, please let that be a comfort to all who knew him. Rest in Peace little puppy angel  :'(
