Title: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: alek0 on August 27, 2017, 08:31:25 PM
We got a new kitty boy, things are still quite chaotic, Mitzie has not been too happy about it but she is calming down. I actually planned to get two boys (one either ragdoll or russian blue due to their lovely personality and friendliness they are usually a good fit for a multi pet household and one rescue pending suitable personality, i.e. non-dominant boy), but considering her reaction which was much, much worse than when we got Max, I guess I'll stick to one. At least leo totally doesn't mind all the hissing and growling, he is quite fearless and very happy and friendly cat.

This is Leonardo (named after da Vinci, not Di Caprio)

Day two after arrival:

I can't take a photo of him with Max, because they keep chasing each other. Chases still end up with some hissing usually (Max is getting a taste of his own medicine, usually he chases Sophie until she hisses at him), but overall it is good progress considering he only arrived on Friday. Mitzie is now tolerating him being in the same room, but the distance has to be about 1 meter, minimum. Unless freeze dried duck treats are being given, that is instant friendship, all four crowd around me with complete disregard who is standing next to whom, and total focus on just getting more duck  ;D

Congratulations!  LEO!  He's so cute!  And he looks totally at home, too.   :D  I just love that photo of him with his carrot along with his "twin" Sophie with her carrot on the sofa.   :D

Max and Sophie have already accepted him, and he is now playing with Max a lot. I wish I could have captured on camera Max's confused look. They were chasing each other, Max hid behind the air filter and then Leo run away to hide in the cat tunnel, they were doing the usual "who's going to break cover first" thing with peeking at each other, and then Leo spotted a Darth Vader mouse and started playing with it, completely forgetting about Max, who had the most confused expression on his face. It was so funny.

Mitzie is still hissing occasionally when he is too close, but she is much better, capable of purring happily even with Leo clearly visible as long as he is not too close.

I think things are going well:

He spent a lot of time playing with Max today  ;D Mitzie is not too happy, but tolerates him.

That's great news that things are going so smoothly!  Yay!

Leo looks completely at home.  <3

Two boys are playing together a lot, girls are tolerating him, Sophie better than Mitzie, but no one is too happy with Leo's idea that tails make the best toys ever.

It does look like Leo and Max are becoming buddies.  I hope the girls become more accepting with time.  He sure is a cutie!

Girls are definitely tolerating him, and he feels quite relaxed. Too relaxed maybe, since he persists with sneaky tail attacks when he is awake  ;D

And like any kitten, one moment he is running around at full speed, next moment he is sound asleep, and he can fall asleep anywhere. Definitely very relaxed and very affectionate.

Leo grows sooooo fast, he was 1.7 kg on 26th August at vet's office, just checked his weight last night since vet commented that he has grown (we had appt for third kitten shot), and he was 2.4 kg on Sept. 5th. Not fat, just grown bigger, and he is not even four months old yet! I guess I shouldn;t be surprised, since just for freeze dried he was eating as much as a 6 kg adult cat, that is not counting canned and dry  :D

I think Max got used to tail chewing, he doesn't even hiss anymore when it happens, tolerates it for a while and then gets up and moves if he doesn't want to play. If he wants to play they start rolling around and jumping on each other immediately.
Mitzie and Sophie, however, hiss as soon as they spot him watching the tail. They tolerate him otherwise, but if he is in "play with the tail" mood, he is in trouble.

Oh wow, yes, I can totally see he's much bigger now from the other photo of him with Max!   :D

Too funny about Mitzie and Sophie hissing at just Leo's watching their tails.

I love these new pics!  Leo is getting some Cattitude, I see!   :D

And I laughed at his "Please, privacy" photo.  Are his hind legs supposed to go inside the bowl of the toilet?  He looks so cute I just had to laugh!

And it's so wonderful to see them hanging out together without any issue.  That's really awesome.

We are on the yellow training ring so his back  legs are on that, when we move to green one hole is bigger so he’ll need to start moving back feet to the toilet seat. Halfway through...

Peaceful moments dont last long though, since he is still in cant resist catching tails phase...

He is constantly chasing Max, two of them play a lot and poor Max often wants some rest. If Sophie could snicker watching that, she would  ;D I'm pretty sure she is enjoying seeing Max getting a taste of his own medicine.

That boy is not afraid of anything! And he loves running into the store room (normally cat free area and he knows he is not allowed there) so he just runs in at warp 9 speed and then lies on the floor next to dehumidifier, and purrs like crazy when I pick him up and take him out of the room.

Big bundle of cute just destroyed my glasses (again!). Frame is broken and one of the lenses is broken, I had no idea polycarbonate could crack like that. And I had them less than 3 months, he destroyed previous pair by chewing on them and leaving bite marks/scratches on the lenses. I guess bulletproof (polycarbonate, very hard material) does not mean kitten proof ;)

More pics:

He is 7 months now, and Max has just turned seven years old, how time flies.

Mitzie is back to her normal weight, creatinine and urea are normal, but ALT has crept up. I am trying to see if we can stop cyproheptadine (appetite stimulant, works great for her better than mirtazipine), and she is eating canned food which is not prescription one, but eats very little of renal dry. I'll see how it goes for a week, but it looks like she might go back on cyproheptadine again, I want her to eat more renal food and in general she needs to eat both wet and dry to keep up her weight. She is nicely solid now, not squishy like before. Any advice would be appreciated.

She is currently on vit. B supplements, ursodeoxycholic acid and SAMe (Denamarin) for her liver, Azodyl for kidneys, famotidine for nausea and stomach acid (if I take her off it, she starts vomiting within a day or two) and she was on cyproheptadine for appetite.

:D I'm still wearing my glasses with Stormy's perfect bite impression from when she was a kitten! Some kitties are just down right naughty!  :D

Glad that Mitzie is doing well. I can't think of any way to get her to eat the dry except sprinkling something tasty on it to try a fool her into eating more of it. They usually see right through that though.

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: alek0 on December 18, 2017, 08:54:14 PM
I am thinking of getting a pair of cheap reading glasses just for him, he is nuts about glasses. I usually keep a hard case next to my pillow just for the purpose, but i didn't think I had to use it if I just take them off for 5s . I also need to get him his toothbrush, so many toys and still the most interesting thing is to go to bathroom and bring toothbrush to bed. We are now keeping our new toothbrushes in the cupboard, who knows where he drags them at night before bringing them to bed :D

I've discussed with the vet and put Mitzie back on cyproheptadine and now she is eating a lot of renal dry, we are literally talking about 2-3 times as much dry as when she is not on appetite stimulant and a bit less wet food. Sprinkling freeze-dried chicken doesn't work, she would still go preferably for wet food unless she is on meds. I would like her to be on less meds, but I guess if its not broken, don't fix it? She looks well and seems happy. Its weird how meds change her food preferences.

We finally found where the toothbrushes have been disappearing. He has a habit of bringing toothbrushes and combs to bed, we have to keep ours inside the bathroom cabinet and we bought him some cheap ones just to play. Since he brings them to bed, he has apparently stuffed three toothbrushes and two pens in the gap between bed frame and the window below the mattress. How did he manage that, I have no idea...

CorLeone is already as big as Beau and he's 8 months old.

Anybody has any tips how to stop Leo from jumping on the kitchen counter with the stove and sink (only area where he is not allowed for safety reasons, and of course whenever I am in the kitchen he gets curious).

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo

Love the photos!  The carrot one and the lazy one!   :D   And sweet little Max.   :-*

As for prevention on the kitchen counter, I guess I'd recommend the same thing that I recommended to avoid having a cat pee there, and that would be to put this up:  It's made of thick aluminum so when it falls or gets touched, it makes a bit of a thunderous noise.  They also come in plain silver, and there are more expensive ones that aren't these re-usable types...

That link doesn't work :( I am willing to try anything, though not sure how will that boy react to noise. This is the cat which would turn on the little automatic vacuum cleaner just to play with it, we had to put it away. He is quite a character.

Post by: merrihart on January 09, 2018, 05:07:24 AM
I read in my cat behavior book to put a couple pennies in soda cans, tape the drinking hole, and line the counter with them.

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: alek0 on January 09, 2018, 07:28:29 PM
Coins in soda cans worked wonderfully for all of the others, no effect whatsoever on Leo. Water sprayer doesn't work either. He is not afraid of water (at least he stopped trying to sleep inside the toilet and now curls up in the sink, silly cat), and I am worried he will fall in every time I have a bath since he keeps trying to play with bubbles and keeps tapping my head with puzzled look as if he is trying to ask "what is that stuff? what are you doing", lol.  He is not afraid of loud noises, when others run away he runs toward the sound to investigate.

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: NedF on January 09, 2018, 10:17:37 PM
He sounds like Stormy! She was a naughty, naughty kitten. I tried the coins in the can - nope. Squirt bottle - nope. She'd jump up on the counter and I'd squirt her BOOM! right in the face and she just looked at me like "do it again!"  :o I'm sorry to say nothing worked except waiting for her to grow out of it, which she did in a few years. She's not the sharpest tack in the box though so if Leo is a smart one you will hopefully have better luck training him! Cosmo was very smart and easy to train. Never any trouble from him once he knew the rules.

All the kitties are looking great! Love the sleepies on the bed and of course the ever popular carrot! Mitzie is looking very sweet today!

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: August on January 09, 2018, 11:51:06 PM
Ack, sorry about that.  How about one from the States...

https://www.amazon.com/Hoomoi-Kitchen-Oil-Removal-Scald/dp/B071KFQBMJ/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1515570518&sr=8-11&keywords=kitchen+splatter+shield

It's called a "splatter shield" and you can put it in the area you don't want jumping.  If Leo happens to hit it, it will make a loud foil-like thunder sound (and likely fall to the floor and maybe spook him?  Or maybe not  ::)  ).  At any rate, it will protect the area if it's hot and you don't want him jumping up onto or running across.

Leo's favourite pose, you can see his toothbrush on the bed too, every morning it is a different gift, either toothbrush or another toy or my earphones or glasses wiping cloth or dishwashing sponge (ugh):

Leo and Sophie, she is still bigger, by 100 g only though and he is not fully 9 months yet:

This can also help to get some idea how big he is:

Mitzie is getting rather round, will try to get her off appetite stimulant after we get back from the trip, don't want to change anything while we are not there, but she is 4.7 kg now, heaviest she has been in the past 5 years, and big improvement compared to 3.7 kg in sept. last year but more weight would probably not be that great:

One bad thing - both boys have diarrhoea and have been throwing up last night :( Vet appt. scheduled for tomorrow, wish us luck to fix it whatever it is before we need to leave next week. If its only the boys ,I wonder if it could be from chewing on the dish rag or something else icky ? Of course its right before you have to leave too ! Great about Mitzie's weight gain though .

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: alek0 on February 01, 2018, 11:47:52 PM
I think its more because boys can't keep their noses out of each other's butts  ;D They are more close while girls keep to themselves...

Leo does bring dish washing sponge to bed etc. but Max doesn't chew on anything weird.

Good news is they are getting better with just probiotics and more bland food. Hopefully whatever it is that is passing between two of them will finally disappear when Leo is fully grown. Nothing like having a kid in the house to have various infections just going around. Whether its animals or humans...

Lol, same 14 beds for 4 cats. Not counting currently inactive beds in storage (I've decided to do things in a smarter way, and several beds are in storage, to be swapped from time to time with beds currently in use and then they behave as if those are new), 5 cat platforms and two built in playhouses.

And apparently bathroom sink is a bed for Leo. Inconvenient thing is that Max sometimes pees in the sink and when sink is occupied, poor boy has to get creative. This morning he went to the toy basket and took out a toy, Leo run over to see and then Max quickly went to pee in the sink  ;D

And Mitzie is getting really round (4.9 kg now), just look at her compared to Max:

trying to stop appetite stimulant, lets see how it goes, fingers crossed that she keeps eating well (and keeps eating some kidney food) and stops gaining. I'd like her to be at ~4.5 kg, with small amount of extra weight, she is now approaching the boundary between overweight and obese and that is not good.

Two fluff balls:

Btw, anyone knows what software to use to convert video to smaller size and then website to post it? I got some cute videos of Leo eating yogurt and egg yolk from soft-boiled egg. He always insists on sharing my breakfast, loves greek style yogurt, cheese and egg yolks (has to be soft-boiled just right though, he likes egg yolk when it is runny and warm). It is also hilarious if I forget about the eggs and they end up hard boiled and then he just keeps complaining while I eat  :D

Mitzie just had her blood test and now ALT and creatinine are both in normal range, urea was slightly elevated (the blood was taken about 1h after the meal, so I don;t worry too much about that). I am keeping her on the same regime, we just reduced cyproheptadine to 1/4 pill daily since she was eating waaaayyy too much on 1/2 pill and was approaching 5 kg and could eat a whole can just for an afternoon snack. Half of the dose seems to be about right to keep appetite normal without overeating. She stops eating kidney food (she is on kidney dry and normal wet food on the lower end of phosphorus content). She is generally quite happy, so I guess just continue what we've been doing. Its lots of meds (various supplements +famotidine +cyproheptadine), but it works.

She will be 18 in May. I think I'll celebrate her birthday on the same day as Leo's, since I don;t know exact date for her. And here is big naughty boy, soon to be one:

Btw, he managed to move 30 lbs dumbbell to open the closet and get inside... Then of course I saw him immediately and I missed Max due to his darker colour and him being deeper in on another shelf, closed the door, set the weight, and noticed Max was missing. OK, open the closet and there he was, annoyed at being disturbed in his nice comfortable nap.

On the regular check up vet confirmed he is not fat, just big. Everybody is doing well, Mitzie's creatinine is in normal range, ALT also but there are still some signs of inflammation. Will be upping glucosamine, chondroitin and omega 3s. I've been giving her Senior Gel for omega3s and it has glucosamine and chondroitin in it, as well as vit B, but the dose for glucosamine and omega 3 is rather low. I also started some anti-inflammatory herbal supplements, for both her and Max since he also has some elevation in globulin and his ALT is slightly above the upper limit. Has anyone tried this:
https://www.nutravet.co.uk/nutramed-for-dogs-and-cats-60-capsules

It is sold under name Nutracam in Canada I think. I will update in 3 months whether it has worked. Since Mitzie is over 18 I suspect that there could be some arthritis in addition to liver and kidney issues which is contributing to chronic low grade inflammation, lets see if supplements help. Waiting for delivery for sty with higher omega 3 and glucosamine content to add that as well. It doesn;t hurt I guess, and it may help. Will try Technyflex, my vet uses the same supplement for his own pets.

Sophie has just turned twelve, doing well, except for being annoyed by Leo  :D Everyone is eating well, stable weight (except that Leo is still growing it seems, but it takes longer for ragdolls to reach full adult size). Mitzie is now at 5.1 kg, Max is 4.5 kg, Sophie 5.5 kg, and Leo 6.7 kg. Glad that vet confirmed he is not fat  ;D

Vet's little helper  ;D

Vet came today to check Mitzie since she has been throwing up in the past week, mostly when straining with her poo. Other than that no problems, and we will add pumpkin to her food and hope that will sort it out.

I just can't believe that leo run to the door to say hi to the vet (while everyone else run away) and he was totally chilled during his check up, and "helping" by playing with the tools when it was others turn. Oh, and he has started peeing in the bathtub. We tried to stop him by filling in the water but it totally doesn;t work, he still jumps in and pees right next to the drain where the water is deepest. Silly cat  :D

She is willing to eat food with pumpkin added, so hopefully that will fix the problem.

I've tried to get Max more attention and playtime than usual yesterday (birthday boy), but as usual that didn't exactly work out as planned. Max loves to play with those LED light toys, but as Max chases the light, Leo is chasing him. It starts with Leo giving him a puzzled look, like "wth is he doing?" and then he slowly gets more excited, you can just see him thinking "hmmmm, maybe he wants to play?" and then "Yay, he wants to play, lets play! Gerooonnnimmmmooooo!" and then he jumps on poor Max  ;D

Another one of Leo. Whenever someone comes over, he thinks their stuff makes a great toy for him, I have to ask people to put bags etc. in the storeroom since he tries to open bags and steal pens, earphones etc. If any of the stuff, like jackets, cardigans etc. is not put away, he thinks it makes a great blanket  ;D

Good girl Mitzie! Your mouth must be feeling better! What a good boy Leo is being, taking care of Mitzie after her procedure. He's such a charmer! Is it my imagination or has he gotten darker? I noticed Haboob is much darker than when I got him too.

Yes, Leo has gotten darker, I think it is normal for ragdolls.

Mitzie:

And of course Leo, he loves to pose for pics. Do I have a small sofa or a big cat, or is it a bit of both  :D

Weird - I missed some other photos and I missed these as well.   ???

Please tell me that the various plates of food are various flavors to suit each kitty's need.   :D

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: alek0 on May 28, 2019, 05:48:55 PM
Yes, they are all different flavours, but all cats eat everything. They just prefer to try a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Except Leo who eats a lot of everything  :D

One  thing which I fail to understand - if I open a big can of 156 g and divide it on two plates, why everyone crowds around one plate and they totally ignore the other? It is the same food from the same can!

Thank you! He actually stole a chilli pepper few days ago. Chillies are my comfort food, and my husband put a bunch of fresh chillies next to my plate knowing I had a tough day at work, I went to the bathroom to wash my hands and what do I see on my way back - chilli pepper on the bed  :D Little thief grabbed it but probably didn't have time to stuff it between mattress and wall (his stash for all the stolen stuff, typically has at least one toothbrush and a couple of those kitty boinks tube toys).

And as soon as I put down a yoga mat, there he is, coming over running and then just flops onto it and pretends to sleep

Sophie is the only one having interest in the food inside the package. If she is not happy with what is served, she starts digging among packages and cans and throwing them on the floor.

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: alek0 on December 01, 2019, 11:25:01 PM
Mitzie is doing well for her age, blood test results are stable, cartophen injections are helping with mobility, she still hates lactulose supplementation but she needs it in order to poop regularly (constipated otherwise).

Max got a new cushion and spends most of the time on it  ;D funny boy. Sophie is doing well, can't believe she is 13 already and so far so good, no health issues.

Leo is unbelievably relaxed cat. Currently waiting for results of his poop sample to make sure all clear after the tapeworm episode, fingers crossed.  I've seen some blood in the poo, so best to check the cause.

Dental went well, she did have one tooth extracted, but she has been extremely hungry after and in fact I had to take away dry food (freeze-dried) since she kept trying to eat both wet and dry. I will likely give her some freeze-dried food tonight since it is softer than kibble and she keeps asking for it (and trying to open kitchen cabinets throughout the night in search of food). She was purring happily within 5 mins of arriving home, and vet's recommendations of "give a little food" went out of the window since she just ate whole can at once, and 2 hours later ate another half can . She doesn't seem to be in any pain and is in fact in great mood since coming home, I don't know if that tooth was troubling her or if she appreciates being home more after spending the day in scary hospital :) The only thing I am not happy about is that she got Metacam injection for pain in the hospital, they also gave me metacam to take home but I requested Tangesic instead. She should be fine after just one injection, right?

Forgot to mention, according to blood test she is perfectly healthy, no signs of any kidney or liver or any other issues. That blood test for early signs of heart disease also came back normal (I just asked them to add it in, since most of my cats are so terrified of being at the clinic since normally hey get check ups at home they sometimes show signs of stress murmur in the clinic and no such signs at home). Sophie's heart and lungs were normal on check up also. Which means her asthma is so well controlled with IQAir (she starts to cough if any filters turn red and it is time to replace them, but otherwise she doesn't cough at all). She is 13 now.

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: NedF on February 15, 2020, 08:56:24 PM
Really good news to hear Sophie is doing so well! Sorry about the tooth and the Metacam though. She should be ok with just the one dose since her bloodwork doesn't show any kidney problems. Temgesic is a better choice in my opinion. Thunder was on it for years with no problems and it worked great for her pain.

Sophie looks like she's not quite ready to forgive you for the dental!  :D Max is looking thoughtful and Leo comfy in his box!  :)

Title: Re: Mitzie, Sophie, Maxwell, and Leonardo
Post by: Fizzy1 on February 16, 2020, 09:35:20 PM
I agree with Ned, one dose of Metacam is not likely to be a problem.  Kozy had one dose when he was a shelter kitty for a muscle sprain.  We requested our current vet to write “No Metacam” on his chart.

Such great pics!! :D ;D.   Glad that Sophie got thru the dental okay.

That's great about Sophie's successful dental.  (That must have been horrible for YOU though  :P )  So fantastic that she didn't seem phased by the missing toof and was able to eat so well.  So lucky she didn't have to spend the night!

Lol August, during her dental, I climbed all the hills in vicinity, literally.  Took a day off and went hiking with my husband, short trails in the vicinity so that we would have phone reception and could get there quickly if needed, while doing something to keep my mind occupied and worry less.

This was from those hikes:

What a great idea to go for a hike during the procedure!  That looks like it must have been a very nice distraction.

LOL Leo and his yogurt.  He's practicing very good posture, isn't he.   :D

Aww Leo, such a good boy.  :-* Sophie looks like she's giving the doorknob the stink eye.  :D Mitzie and Max see to be handling things well. Look at that tongue on Max!  :D
