Title: Vital Essentials freeze-dried raw
Post by: August on July 30, 2017, 04:44:56 PM
http://www.vitalessentialsraw.com

We had the chicken for breakfast.  I have never, never ever seen the cats as excited about food before in my life.  This was our first time having it but it was the most enthusiastic reaction of all the freeze-dried raw.  I'm really excited.

The boys and Fhizzy (all on the 3rd floor) had theirs rehydrated and it was gone in an instant

Sunday, Jazza, Lulu, and Chami (all on the 2nd floor) had theirs half rehydrated and it was gone in an instant.

The amount fed at one mealtime seems insanely small and I guess we all need to get used to that.  For the boys, breakfast was approximately 33 grams (a little over 1 oz = 1 patty plus water) of rehydrated freeze-dried raw (they're used to having 4-5 ounces of canned food).

I love this company's snack food!  I have not tried the freeze-dried food.

My cats love the freeze-dried minnows!

We tried the duck for breakfast and this, like chicken, was a hit!  Everyone ate it rehydrated much to my surprise and delight.

I'm using 1 mini-patty + 15 ml water.

This seems to be a really good consistency for raw for us - when rehydrated it becomes like a nice minced raw meat.

I'm loving this company.

I've read really good reviews about those fd minnows treats, Merrihart!

ETA:  Fed everyone the chicken rehydrated this morning and it was gone in an instant.  Every single kitty ate it with gusto, and it was completely rehydrated.  I think my brain may have exploded.

August, I'm going to try these on my next shipment.  I had looked at them, but wasn't sure how much food would actually be there.

So, for you, 1 patty is good for 4 cats?  I can't remember how many boys you have.

We're using the mini-patties, so

Boys (about 13 pds) get 1 mini-patty each
Jazza, Lulu and Chami (about 9 pds) get 3/4 mini-patty each
Fhizzy&Sunday (about 7.5 pds) get 1/2 mini-patty each

That's odd, I wrote in my last post that I'm using 1 patty = 15 ml water, but in my other memo it's 22 ml of water.  Gah.  I'll have to see tomorrow morning.

I hope your guys like it as much as mine do!

We tried the rabbit today.

All three boys gobbled it up.

Half of the girls ate theirs.

Merrihart, I'm using

1 mini-patty = 22 ml warm water

You won't find any information about how much water to put in as they say it's optional.  The reason I'm using 22 ml of water for 1 mini-patty is because the ratio of fd + water for Primal is perfect.  For Primal, it is 1 nugget + 1 tbsp.  Weighed, this is about 7 gr + 15 ml.

1 mini-patty is approximately 12 grams, so that's how I got to the 22 ml of water!

We tried Turkey today.

This might be the all-time favorite for everybody.  Holy smokes.  I've never thought these guys were into turkey and that's why I didn't get the Vital Turkey at first, but man, I'm glad I gave it a try ... the food was absolutely sucked down by all 8 cats.  Mind-blowing.

Thank you for the water information, August.  I couldn't figure out if I was giving too much water or not enough.

I have ordered a package of the mini patties for my beasties.  We'll see how they like it.  I think I'm going to rehydrate the night before and give it for breakfast.

Merrihart,

The Vital Essential mini-patties rehydrate into a wonderful ground, minced meat - it almost looks like taco meat - almost flaky.  It's a very different consistency from Stella.

This brand is hands-down the favorite of all 8 cats here, and I think it's partly in thanks to this flakiness.  It only takes about a minute of stirring and "chopping" with the side of the spoon to get it to its ground consistency so you might try making it in front of them and serving it freshly made.

As of now, our favorites ranking is:

#1  Turkey
#2  It's a tie between the Chicken and the Duck
#3  Rabbit

Fingers crossed your guys will like it!

Duck wasn't a favorite, but the chicken and turkey rock!  better price, but still pretty expensive when you are feeding a lot of cats.  One of our go to foods now!

That's fantastic, Merrihart!

Vital Essentials is in our rotation and it's really well-liked over here.

I'm finding there's quite a difference in texture depending on the lot.  The chicken we got the first number of times when rehydrated became like ground taco meat, however the lots we have now rehydrate to the consistency of oatmeal.

I'm also finding the duck to be chunkier recently.

This texture discrepancy has only been an issue with the Larges.   ::)

So if you find later on that your guys are suddenly not eating a flavor they were before, it might be a texture issue, and you might play around a little with the water amount.

My cats love this food, but I had several issues with it, namely some boxes of VE chicken which is their favourite seem to have different colour and different and very strong nasty smell. I think I am giving up on this one and sticking to Primal, too much variation in quality from one box to another even from the same batch and same lot number.

Lately, our issue over here is that even putting the patties through the mini-Cuisinart, there are still relatively healthy chunks of meat and bone (whereas other freeze-dried raw usually becomes a complete powder).  I don't have an issue with the chunks or even the variety of textures depending on the lot,... however... it's certainly much easier feeding everyone the same thing because as soon as I feed someone something else, we get the "but I want that other flavor, tooooooo!" ... so I'm kind of wondering what to do.

Chami, Tuesday, Jazza, Fhizzy and Sunday have no issue with the texture and they love this brand.
Lulu, Friday and Wednesday are all on the fence.  They'll eat it but they look like they'd be happier having something else.

We'll certainly go through our stock for now and see how it goes, I guess.

Vital Essentials is now in a resealable bag (instead of a hard plastic tray).  This is much easier to use!

And I guess it's just the lot, but the Turkey and Chicken right now are super super super yummy (apparently  :D ) and all 8 kitties go nuts when served this stuff.

We just tried their turkey Topper.  It's a crumbled powder and mixes with water SUPER EASILY.  Cats are liking it!  Only comes in a small bag, though. :(
