Title: We have a new kitty boy!
Post by: catbird on May 15, 2017, 04:45:26 PM
He's a 13-month-old white and orange male rescue cat. His name is Glory (short for Glorfindel, one of the High Elves, for all you fellow Lord of the Rings nerds. He's our 4th Lord of the Rings cat.)

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4167/34477784252_07c1a1ecf9.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/UwFE55)glory (https://flic.kr/p/UwFE55) by catbird pics (https://www.flickr.com/photos/21450277@N06/), on Flickr

He is a BIG boy! This quick phone photo does not do justice to either his size or the "glory" of his coloring. Allegedly, he is half Maine Coon--his original shelter had him labeled that way. We know do not know whether he was originally a stray or a surrender. He does have some very MC-like characteristics, including a high, squeaky voice and a very "chill" personality. He has the kind of personality some rescues call "bomb-proof"--nothing seems to disturb him. He handles it all. And he's smart and clever as can be, and loves people. Within an hour of being brought home, he was acting like he'd lived here for years.

Glory was rescued from a shelter in Kentucky on 5/3 by a local Wisconsin group. He had been in the Kentucky shelter for 3 months, unbelievably--I can't imagine why this incredible, personable cat was not adopted. He was brought to a local small-business pet supply shop where I often shop for cat food, where the owners show the rescue cats and handle adoptions.

I went to that store to buy cat food on Saturday, and discovered him. We had been considering since the loss of Linley that Cara would eventually need a new male companion to play with; she had gained weight and showed signs of depression. I wasn't particularly looking for a cat that day, although I had the characteristics of the cat we needed in the back of my mind. And Glory fit the description! After consulting with family members, we brought him home later that day. We feel incredibly lucky, since I'm sure within a few days, someone else would have taken him.

If Glory is an Elf, Cara is behaving like a Balrog, not unexpected. She hates him so much right now that she is sometimes hissing and growling at my daughter if his scent is on her! So we are running the Feliway Multi-Cat like crazy, and doing the room exchanges--he's confined in a separate room while Cara is out and about, then she's confined while he's out. This way, she can get used to his scent gradually, before we do anything face-to-face. Phantom (21 years old) is not exactly pleased, either, but unless he gets close to her, she ignores him. Glory has excellent cat manners in his interactions with her.

He has an incredibly silky coat which I think will get a lot longer after being flea-free and getting quality food. (You can see the breakage from the past flea infestation.) And OMG, does this boy eat! I am certain that he is still growing.

We are so happy to have found Glory!

He is a handsome one catbird! I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't done growing yet. His paws look huge!  :D I'm sure Cara and he will be best buds in no time - he sounds like quite the southern gentleman.

Oh, Happy Day!  Yes, if he is in fact part maine coon, he'll be growing for a while.   :D

I'm so sorry Cara is acting like a high Diva, and I hope she'll come around.

Congratulations catbird!  A handsome Elf-lord has become part of your family.  Love his name!  Some day soon, Cara will be as enchanted by Glory as Frodo was enchanted by Glorfindel.  It is difficult to imagine that he was not adopted sooner.  How lucky you all are.  :-*

Thanks to you all. I think he's pretty special, too.  ;D

Glory is doing well, and at least Cara has stopped hissing and growling at his scent. :) Glory and Phantom got into a little bit of swatting yesterday, but nothing too bad.

We have begun to think that Glory's age may have been overestimated a bit because of his larger-than-average size. As we have gotten to know him better, we are seeing that his behavior is in many ways quite kittenish, more so than we remember Cara was at age 13 months. His face is also kitten-looking. We think he may be a few months younger than they said. However, I haven't raised a male kitten since 1988, only females. I can't remember whether the males mature more slowly?

But this cat is incredibly talented! For one thing, he showed us within a day or two that he plays fetch (like Cara)--he initiated a fetch game with us. But he goes Cara one better: Cara brings the toy she has fetched and drops it at your feet. Glory will not drop it for another throw except into the hand of the person who has thrown it. Not onto the floor, not into another hand that is offered--only into the hand of the thrower. Like Cara, he also carries toys around in his mouth.

I think he's also interested in playing with Cara--he's starting to spend some time outside the room where she's penned up during the time he is free, and today they were batting paws under the door. And yesterday, when he knew she was on the other side of the door, he quite deliberately picked up a toy mouse and dropped right by the door, as if offering it to her. She, however, still considers him to be an intruder. It will be awhile yet before we let the two of them mingle.

Oh yay!  Oh YAY YAY!!  What fun!  He looks like such a sweetheart!  How incredibly clever about the toy and giving it back to only the person who originally threw it for him.  Of course this means you'll need to figure out fun games so that he'll be challenged - jumping on backs and maybe a backflip or something!   :D

Really, really happy to read your happy news, Catbird.  That's just so fantastic.

If my memory is correct, maine coons and manxes both take 5 years to mature.

Aw, a fetching kitty!  Love fetching kitties, and he is clever, to give it back to the person who threw it.   :-*

Integration of Glory is, unfortunately, not making much progress so far.  :P

Once he decided that our house was home for good, a lot of those nice manners faded away. He and Cara still can't be left together without at least one human "cat cop" in direct attendance to prevent fights. Even then, if we can't intervene fast enough, they start swatting each other, and I'm afraid it could progress to worse.

We decided last week that maybe they had not gotten enough time where they were separated but still seeing each other, so we brought out the mesh-sided covered pen. For a few 2-hour periods during the day and evening, Glory is confined in it while Cara is free. (Otherwise, either one or the other is shut into a separate room.) He tries to jump at her through the pen when she walks by! and does the same to elderly Phantom. I can't decide if this is just kittenish play (I firmly believe that he is not yet a year old, contrary to what we were told when we adopted him) or whether it's out-and-out aggression. Cara interprets it as aggression, and will growl, hiss, and slap when he does it.  I don't blame her, because this guy is VERY big, and has grown more since we adopted him.  :o  He still eats like he's in a growth spurt, too. (Glad he's not tabby, and has a long floofy tail, or I would risk being fined for harboring a lynx!)

I think as he matures he will likely settle down some, because deep down he seems to be a really nice cat. He just needs to be controlled through the "juvenile delinquent" stage, I guess. We will keep on working. He's still sweet as pie to people and a lot of fun. We are trying to give him as much playtime and exercise as we can, to burn off that kitten energy.

Looking at his wedge-shaped face, long legs, and some faint "point" shading on his coat, I think he likely has Siamese as well as Maine Coon ancestry. What a combo!

I am sorry thing are progressing slowly with Glory.  It will probably take a lot of patience, but, hopefully, eventually it will all work out.  Good luck!

Urghhhhh.  Cat Cop.   ::)   If you want to feel good about your situation you can swing by Japan and see how House Swap goes over here.

He sure sounds like a sweetie though.  Does he sleep on your bed?  Sitting on laps?  Maybe it's still too early for that "adult" stuff.   :)

Do you have some really tall cat trees ? Being able to get up high helped here when we brought Shadow inside.

"Wedge shaped face"....

Are you sure he's a Norwegian Forest Cat?

Yes, we have several high places that the cats like to use, including a 7-foot cat tree.

August, I sympathize. We have always had to do a little of the "cat cop" routine with Cara, because she can be bossy. You find yourself pulling your hair and saying, "Why can't they just get along?!"

Glory was sitting on laps from the first day, but doesn't stay very long--too much to see, do, and get into! That's another reason I don't think he's really an adult yet; he has a kitten's activity level. Until yesterday, I'd never seen him asleep--whenever he was not shut into a separate room, it was go-go-go. He did fall asleep in the pen last night during the early evening "snooze hour" when the other two were asleep.

Part of me wishes that Cara would just put Glory in his place like Cameo did when Linley was young, new, and aggressive. (Cameo had had enough and jumped on top of Linley, scaring him half to death, and that was enough to reform him. The Manx Cannonball Attack is no doubt very intimidating.)

Maybe Cara will put Glory in his place once she is totally fed up with him.    :-\  It does sound like kitten "stuff" though, albeit, a BIG kitten.  Cara needs to smack him down.

Actually, that may be an indication that he is indeed a much younger kitten than the shelter thought.  I found with Beau that the adults will put up with a lot of bad behavior until about 18 months old, then the smack down cometh!

Yikes, all that energy, Glory probably is young. I agree with what others have said, it's probably going to be up to Cara to put a stop to all this. I hope she decides enough is enough very soon!

Progress yesterday and today! When Glory was in the pen, and Cara was outside, their encounter actually looked much more like play, on both sides. Cara of course had to get in a little hiss for good measure, but she really did seem to be attempting to engage in a playful manner, not as a fight. And Glory did the same.

I think the idea of them seeing each other more is definitely working.

Things are not working well with Glory at all. We still have to keep him separated from the other 2 cats, either in a separate room, in a pen, or put the other cats in a separate room. I think he's finally finished growing, but he's still attacking the others. We have managed to prevent fights only by separation. He is still trying to jump on the others even through the pen. Phantom is terrified of him, and I definitely can't risk him hurting her, since she's so elderly.

I did find fleas on Glory today; maybe that is what is making him irritable (see my other recent post.) He got along so well with the other cats at the pet store with the rescue, and we selected him specifically because he appeared to relate very well to other cats. I can't figure out what went wrong. He will be seeing a vet soon (when they have an opening that fits with my work schedule; I am waiting for a cancellation) and I'm hoping they can give me some insight into why he seemed to change.

With humans, he's still an absolute sweetie pie and very affectionate. Although kinda wild! but not out of line for a young, energetic male cat.

Ughhhhh, cats!!!!!!!!!!   ??? :P >:( :-\   Why do they have to be such PsITA?   ::)

I'm so sorry to hear things are still a "situation."  Seeing that he had fleas (or brought eggs with him) and they're just being noted now, well, yeah, I would think that would make him very irritable and jumpy.  Did the vet decide not to do a flea treatment from the get-go?  I wonder if the itchy uncomfortable feeling may have started shortly after you brought him home - though, it sure has been a while...?

Fingers crossed that once his fleas are gone and he's feeling more comfortable, that he'll be able to chill and not think that the other kitties are making his skin crawl.

<<<<hugs>>>>

For months, Cara has been trying so hard to befriend him, giving him eye squeezes, deliberately using non-threatening body language--although she hated him at first, of course, I think she really wants to establish a relationship with him. To have another young cat for Cara to play with, after we lost Linley, was the reason we adopted Glory in the first place.

Thinking about possible allergies as a cause of Glory's aggressiveness, I tried multiple weeks of restricted diets (fish-free, chicken-free, etc.) with no result. So I don't think he has food allergies at all.

Fingers crossed that flea treatment will do it!

I hope you will sort it out eventually. It would be good for Cara to have someone to play with, and hopefully Glory will settle down.. I can fully understand your concern about Phantom, elderly cats need extra care (its great that Phantom is 21).

I hope everything has smoothed itself out, catbird. Cat behavior can be so puzzling sometimes.
