Title: Pill wrap
Post by: Fizzy1 on June 28, 2016, 02:57:49 PM
I can't pill Kozy and he won't eat the Pill Pockets.  We were recently at the vet for chronic sneezing and the vet wanted to try him on an allergy med called Singulair.  She suggested a substance to wrap the small pill in and he loves it.  I hadn't heard of this stuff before so I thought I'd share it for all those Impossible-to-pill cats.  It's made by Vetoquinol.  I think it can be found online and in stores pretty easily.  It smells like bacon, lol.  Knock on wood, he hasn't refused it yet.

....Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down..... :)

I had no idea this stuff existed so I'm happy to share the info.  Never had a cat like Kozy and I need all the help I can get!

Nice. I used soft tuna/bonito flakes in the past to wrap the pills. After all the pill giving with Max (3+ years, multiple pills per day), now I can pill even difficult cats with no problem. However, I might get this stuff since I am  the only one who can give pill to Mitzie, neither my husband nor pet sitter can do it so if I can find an alternative that would mean she is not without meds when I have to travel.

Arghhh - looked for this in the UK and could only find it on amazon uk - for a staggering £50+ !!  Compare to the $11 on amazon.com......
Have messaged vetoquinol to see if they have any other uk outlets!
un-be-***g-leiveable  :o

I cant pill Rudi either - and he really needs preds daily - currently we are on compromise with going to vet every 5-7 days for dexafort injections - which of course have detrimental effect on his liver anyhow, so it's a quality of life compromise... :'(

JoMax that's awful I assume you can only order from Amazon UK?

I actually stopped at Petco yesterday and saw a different brand but expensive, everything there was way more than at Amazon. I was looking for litter boxes and they had few of those.

Oh gosh, my apologies.  I thought I had seen it on Petco's website but it must have been a different brand.  I will call and ask my vet tomorrow where they get theirs.  The office is closed today.

JoMax, if I find a local place here that carries it, I'd be happy to send it on to you!  Or I'd be happy to order it from Amazon for you.

ranger - it would seem only amazon - none of the other UK online vet/pet suppliers came up with it.
fizzy - thanks for offer - I have a couple of q's out with seller on US amazon, plus the manufacturers.... not sure whether you would have a problem with customs dec's if you tried to ship to me, but if I get no joy, then will come back to you and maybe you could see what shipping would be if you dont mind

Okay Jomax, let me know.  I just looked at Entirelypets.com and they say they ship to UK for $24.99 for most products.

Hi JoMax !

You might consider asking the folks on petforums.co.uk about a closer supplier:  http://www.petforums.co.uk/ (http://www.petforums.co.uk/)   There's a cat health forum on there.

(not wanting to lose you from here, though :))

I just got an email from my vet.  She said she (no surprise!) sells it for $14.99.  She thinks it's only available thru a veterinarian, and I told her it's available on Amazon.

JoMax, I know your Amazon price is high, but it might help to justify the high cost to know that the 4 oz. lasts a very long time.  You just use a very small amount to wrap the pills in.

I'd still be happy to order it for you thru Amazon here, but I have no idea what the regulations/costs are for mailing something like that.

Did you get any response to your inquiries?

ETA. Well I wasn't thinking.  If you do want me to mail it to you, I would get it from my vet, not Amazon.  As long as she has it in stock, that would be faster than waiting for the Amazon delivery.

I followed the link that Andycat gave for the UK petforum, used their search for Vetoquinol pill wrap, and a few people posted about it a year or two ago.  It's quite possible that you can get it from your own vet?  That would sure be the easiest way to get it.

Fizzy how long does this last? I mean after you open the container does it have a long shelflife?

I don't have the actual container yet, I'm still working with the little sample amount they gave me to see if Kozy would accept it.  I will post the shelflife later this week after I get it from my vet.

There is a different brand called Easypill, you can get a small size to try for ~5pounds at violet.co.uk. That website is reliable, I order Denamarin for Max fro there since the coating on SAMe brand that my vet has makes him throw up.

The label says "Store in a cool, dry place and keep container closed when not in use.  Exp. Date 04/18".  I asked if it was good until that date even if it's opened, and the vet tech said yes.
