Title: Spring! Spring! 2014
Post by: Fizzy1 on March 20, 2014, 01:28:28 PM
Yes, I know there will still be snow and cold to come.  BUT!  Yippee! It's Spring!

No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.  ~Proverb

Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!"  ~Robin Williams

It's spring fever.  That is what the name of it is.  And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!  ~Mark Twain

Yay, Spring!

I saw the feral tortie yesterday, and it wasn't the same feral Tortie that I used to see back in the ground floor apt.  So it might have been last years kitten.  She was HUGE!  And very long haired.

Then tody, I saw a smaller long haired black  kitty ducking into the old skunk  hole near the mailboxes.

Welcome, Spring at last!  Well, at least it will feel like it for a couple of days, but now there is hope for more better days to come.   :)  Of course it is going to snow next Tuesday - it is my birthday, and SNOW is just the present I want!   ::)   ::)  (NOT!)   :P

We are actually supposed to have a WARM day tomorrow (high 56!) before it gets cold and below normal again. But with the strength of that sun, the snow is melting (official snow depth is 0 but there is still a lot of it around in shaded areas and the giant, although diminished, mountains where it was piled by the plows.) There's hope!

It's wonderful not to have to hunker down into the heavy-duty squall commuter coat when I go to work in the morning. I can actually hold my head up and look around!  The redwing blackbirds came back on Wednesday, always one of my favorite signs of spring. I've been hearing geese returning for at least a week, some of the seagulls are back so there must be open water, and a couple of mornings ago, I thought I heard a sandhill crane.

A bit off topic, but I hope someone is doing TNR with your feral family so there will be no more kittens.

That's the 'downside' of spring, unfortunately . . .

According to my fave weather website, our neighborhood is at 81.9 degrees right now, with a Winter Storm Watch alert on the same page for Sunday.  Ah, Spring!

I have the windows open and the birdies are really active right now.  Kozy just had a close encounter with a noisy (nosy?) bluejay. :)

The girls are on "bunny rabbit watch" in the mornings, they sit glued to the windows facing our back yard. Besides the usual birds and squirrels I think there's a family of rabbits living somewhere out back.

Another sign of spring--the mice are on their bi-annual trek into my house from somewhere.  :P The cats have caught three this week. They are teaching Cara to hunt, even Linley. He brought a half-dead one to Cara for her to finish off the other day. Too bad about the lesson; I scooped it out where it could pass away in peace.

Title: Re: Spring! Spring! 2014

catbird,
I thought the mice should be going OUT of the house in Spring, and they come IN in the Fall!   :D  With all of the cats you have, you sure have stupid mice to even think about venturing in your house!  I always heard that cats in the house would keep mice from wanting to come in.  Seemed to work for me!  Never saw a mouse in the house for 44 years of having cats here until after Mandy passed away.  But, I still have had only one since, so maybe I just don't have many in the neighborhood, although my neighbors tell me about mice in their houses.   :-\

How sweet that Linley brought his "girlfriend" a present!   ;D   :D

LOL catbird!  I don't blame you for interferring but Cara needs to learn too.  Good boy, Linley!

Post by: Fizzy1 on April 13, 2014, 08:01:01 AM
Lol, catbird.  Good for Linley!  But it's not so good for the mousie :P

Last summer we were saddened to see a robin hanging around the house with a twig embedded in his side.  It didn't appear to bother him, though, he was bathing and preening, but we worried about him.  Guess what, he's back!  He was in the bath yesterday and looked quite healthy, twig and all!  We're happy to see him and a little surprised that he remembered us, lol.

Our forecast today?   6-12" of snow.  A lot of it will likely melt since it's been so warm.  Hopefully it doesn't hurt the trees in bud and leaf.  Poor birdies!

catbird,
I thought the mice should be going OUT of the house in Spring, and they come IN in the Fall!

For whatever reason, they seem to come in during the fall and spring. Maybe they are looking for a cushy place to have their spring litters--remember, it's still pretty chilly here.  All except one seemed to be small.

We have been getting rain most of the past 24 hours, and the grass has suddenly turned emerald green!  But they are forecasting the white stuff for overnight--ugh! That will make getting up and going to work the Monday of all Mondays.

Way too much snow this year . . . we even went below freezing the other night. The violets have come out big time and some have now gone, others are blooming now. One of my favorites! Trees are leafing out.

I always feel sad for the mice when the cats get them, too. Amazing, though, how the other cats just naturally teach young Cara to hunt.

This was taken a few weeks ago, about an hour's drive away, when you could just see the foliage beginning to emerge.

Catwoods, nice picture!

We heard the first hummingbird of the season on Friday so I put the feeder out.  The next morning it was sitting on the deck with most of the juice gone and the bird bath was in the lilac bushes.  Mr. Raccoon was busy!  LOL, guess we'll be making sure to bring the feeder in at night.  Hmmm, maybe it was the raccoon pretending to be the hummingbird we heard!   ;)

The view on my walk yesterday encouraged me to walk a little faster, lol!  I did get home before it reached me.  It only sprinkled for a brief period and then the skies cleared back to blue.

Oh, that's an awesome picture!

Today I saw the blue violets were out in the ground cover at the PT building :)  And the tulips planted at Penn Tower were FABULOUS.  THey are the only tulips I've seen that were not trying to bloom right out of the ground.

I have heard from catwoods this evening. She is fine, but had been without power since Monday, due to downed trees and power lines from a weaker (EF1) tornado that struck in their general area. They were in the possible path, but it missed them, fortunately. She's tired from coping with the power outage and the other results, sends her regards, and will post when she can.

This has been an absolutely awful weather week. Too bad the lull in the severe weather that started this spring could not have continued.

Except for buckets and buckets of rain, all is well here.  Lots of flooding all around the area, but we are, fortunately, in a very safe spot and our neighborhood is not prone to major flooding.  I had to go out today for a dental appointment and I felt like I would be doing better in boat rather than a car, but didn't have to travel too far.  The yard is a swamp, but no danger to the house.  I will be glad to see the sun again!  At least this wasn't the white stuff!   :P  I know that there are many, many people who have had very tragic experiences in this storm, so I am very lucky in that regard.  I am keeping those people in my prayers.  I feel so sorry for catwoods.  She has endured a lot in recent years with the storms and tornadoes.

Good to know you are both safe ! I hope everyone else starts checking in soon . We are fine here , many places near us are flooded but we are dry . It actually helped here by putting out the fires .

My area is prone to flooding, but not my apartment complex.  My mom's back yard is a swimming pool, but it didn't get in the house.

I drove over the Perkiomen Creek today.  it was not where it belonged.   >:(  And there were signs of minor flooding on many of the roads I took.  The Wissahickon was also not where it belonged because the radio announced that Lincoln Drive and Kelly Drive were closed due to flooding.  Glad I didn't have to go in that direction this morning.

I hope everyone is safe and can get some time to dry out before the next rainfall.

Glad to hear everyone is safe from the flooding and other storms. All the weather warnings give me a chill these days.

Fizzy, spectacular photo, what a view! I enjoyed reading about the hummingbird and raccoon, too.

Thanks, catbird, for letting everyone know we are OK, and thanks everyone for the concern! That last tornado (an F1 I believe) did some damage in town and then went aloft before it got out here. From the tree damage and noise descriptions, we figured it went right over a neighbor's house (the houses are far apart here, but still), and the map in the newspaper agreed, I heard. I haven't seen it yet myself. I am not pleased! I feel like we are playing whack-a-mole with tornadoes, and we are the moles!

Quickly, because there's a little storm rolling in, non-severe but I hate 'em all now :P, a picture:

Meowli, that's so pretty!  Do you know what kind of tree it is?  It looks a little like a tree we have here called a Redbud.  I love them!

Catwoods, I just love the photos you post.  Just gorgeous!

It's a typical Springtime in the Rockies.  We had over 8" of snow with freezing temps last week but our lilacs have started blooming so they escaped much damage.  Now we've had several days of thunderstorms with hail, torrential rain along with 6 tornadoes in the metro area yesterday!  Yikes.  Thankfully, it hardly even rained at my house.  Today we're in the bullseye again.  I don't know how much longer our luck will hold! :-\

I hope you still have a pocketful of luck, Fizzy1.

It was a miserable day here yesterday, but I think the pollen has settled because for the first time in months, I didn't wake up with the need to blow my nose.  Even on Zyrtec, the need to blow my nose in the morning will wake me up.  Instead the 4 am bird calls woke me and the cats up and then I just drifted, waking when the occassional paw of Bisi hit me in the stomach or chest.   ;)

Fizzy, I think it is the eastern redbud. There are a few of these next to the bike/hike path along the Charles along with a couple of other flowering species.

Title: Re: Spring! Spring! 2014
Post by: catbird on May 23, 2014, 05:02:15 PM
Yes, I too believe it is a redbud, Meowli. There is one on the campus of my workplace that is in bloom now, too. But it doesn't look as good as good this one. Where I live, we are at the very edge of the range they can tolerate, and after a hard winter like last winter, the blossoms are kind of sparse. There were a pair of these trees near each other, and one is totally dead.

The color of the blossoms is so beautiful. Very unique.

Fizzy1, I read about the recent Colorado weather and was hoping all was well with you!

Thanks, Mandycat, catbird, and merrihart.  We had pretty decent weather for the weekend.  Yesterday was the best and we saw all kinds of birds including a Bullock's oriole, 2 red tailed hawk chicks in their nest, barn swallows, kingbirds, a tanager, and more.  I went to take some pictures of the lilacs in bloom around the back deck and discovered this little guy.  He let us sit with him for a while before he scooted under the deck.  He was only about 6" big!

What a cute little bun-bun!

We are having urban flash floods here tonight.  :P --in a place that normally doesn't get flash floods so people are not used to it.  Chest-high water (!) was reported in a street about 2 miles from where I live a couple of hours ago. Apparently the rush hour was madness in many areas as cars were swept into other lanes and oncoming traffic by the force of the water. No one was hurt, thankfully, but their cars may never be the same.

We are OK, and I didn't have to drive through deep water on my way home from work, fortunately. We are getting a little water in our basement, but nothing we haven't dealt with before. It's supposed to continue for the next couple of hours as multiple heavy-rain-producing storms keep traveling slowly over the same area.

A wild night here last night! We were hauled out of bed about midnight by a tornado warning, and decided to take it seriously--we were right in the predicted path of a radar-indicated tornado! I can't remember the last time it was that close.

Fortunately, other than lost sleep and a few cat scratches (from hauling 4 upset felines to the basement abruptly), we are fine; not so much as a leaf off the trees where I live.  We had a rip-roaring thunderstorm, and the action continued at a lesser degree through the night, but that's all.

Others were not so lucky. There was damage from what is looking to have been a tornado (not officially confirmed yet) in the southwest suburbs and adjoining areas of my city, and in the downtown area, about a mile from where my daughter lives, there are lots of downed trees and power lines, with some sheet-metal roofs blown off commercial buildings.

It's gonna take me a lot of coffee to get through the day at work, though.  :P

I'm glad to hear you and your daughter made it through the storm, catbird.

Catbird, I was thinking of you last night when I saw that storm headed your way!  ugh!  I'm so thankful nothing happened to you and your daughter.  How scary.  I hope your day goes by quickly so you can get home and rest.

We've had a pretty nice spring so far.  All of the nearby storms with hail have been just this close without touching us.  We love the free water!   :)  Unfortunately the heat and wind are back in the forecast.  We've been getting smoke from the New Mexico fire.

Another round of severe weather here this morning, with another tornado warning for the city! This one occurred during the morning rush hour.

There were no actual tornado sightings or touchdowns, but there was a lot of damage from what were apparently straight-line winds. The damage was less intense but more widespread than what happened earlier this week. Mostly, it's downed trees and tree limbs, which have caused a lot of power outages (including traffic lights out in the congested downtown area during the morning commute) and hit roofs, cars, and so forth.

Again, my house seems to have escaped problems, although family members report that we again have very cranky felines, who resented having their morning naps disrupted to be hauled abruptly to the basement. My office mate's neighbor called and told her there was a branch on her roof, so she went home to check for roof damage. There is a big maple tree downed on the campus of my workplace, but it was far enough away from any buildings or cars that it did no harm.

We've had enough now. The weather needs a page-turn here!

My office mate called. The tree is through her roof, branches hanging down into the rooms on the upper level, plus water damage for which drywall will have to be replaced. And she has to get the branches out of her roof so that it can be fully covered with tarps before the next round of rain comes through and does even more damage. Problem is, all the tree service people are so busy with the damage of the past few days that they can't guarantee showing up any time soon. :'(

(The worst-damaged room is the favorite hiding room of her shy kitty. Poor kitty; I hope he wasn't in there when the branches fell.)

Title: Re: Spring! Spring! 2014

Fizzy1, my co-worker says both her cats appear to be physically unharmed, but acting very skittish and hiding a lot, including the younger one who is usually pretty bold. I don't suppose it helps that she's got tree people and roof people tramping over the roof adding to the stress level for them, either.
