Title: Kill me she's opening cupboards now and taking things SHE wants!!!
Post by: SandyBeach on April 18, 2011, 10:36:46 PM
OMG when will it end....the other day we were in the livingroom and heard a crash.....hubby went out said it was nothing...um yeah...so then I was like...thats so NOT nothing..so he said ..really just that can of catnip you left out....I was, NO I do not give her catnip first thing in the day. So he goes back out and sez....um did you give her Headbandasol (lol omg I am admitting this..its the name I gave my headband she took and christened in her litterbox she plays with it supervised) and ditto RingusDingus (an elastic ponytale holder I use when I clean...she now owns it and plays all supervised cause I know these are NOT safe toys)  SO the last 3 days she takes all this out if we do not give them to her first thing in the AM...Hubby said he will put a lock on that cupboard ..I say we boobie trap it so empty cans fall and scare her.......why do I have to have ugly locks on the cupboards....She must have seen us put her toys up there....So  would you put a lock on ...or..........booby trap it with empty pop cans and no she ought not to be on the countertop either

You sure you gave her the right name? More fitting might have been 'the Devil in Disguise'. She is someone's evil twin, lol.

Why not put the toys into a clear gladware or tupperware container(s), leave them out where she can see them, and can't open the containers, if you don't care for that padlocked kitchen cabinet look.

I would suggest putting really strong magnets rather than a lock. Magnets work quite well (I have them an all cabinet doors and drawers), but when Mitzie and Stefie were young I tried locks and Mitzie kept trying to open the cabinet while I was at work and she dislocated her toe.

Toys in a container are a good idea too, though what she'll probably do is knock off the container t the floor and then make awful noise until you give her what she wants (mine do that with tuna flakes).

Bucky has taught Bisi how to open the cabinets at the floor level.  She's always going in and out of the kitchen cabinets.  I leave the toys strewn all over so that's not a temptation, but certain ones I put way up high on my computer desk.  Like pens and markers.

I think a gladware container would work.  put it on the floor level so she can try to get them, but cant knock it down.

"Child-proof" locks can be temporary...sometimes if they find they can't get into the cabinet, they eventually give up trying and then you can take off the lock. Sometimes. That worked with one of our cats, but not with another. Good luck... ahhh kittens...

I have a kitchen cabinet that won't stay shut by itself, so I found some flexible adhesive magnetic tape at Home Depot.  I imagine that this would work for the kitties.  I would put the magnets strips at the top and the bottom.  Here is a similar product.

Yeah, Mia used to help herself to food and Pip used to walk through the cupboards and tip the glassware just right so that when I opened the cupboards -- CRASH! She stopped doing it when she got older. I would put the things in a different place so that when she get there, she'll see they're gone. The other thing you might be interested in is a product called SCAT. It is a can of air with a motion sensor on it. If she jumps up on the counter, it'll let off a blast of air. Not sure if you want to scare her or not.

Mewsette is smart and determined! I meant to congratulate her, didn't she win one of those cool scratchers!? I hope you can find a way to keep her from ransacking the cupboards.

I used the scare tactic to teach my last cat not to go for the curtains. By balancing the (very light) curtain rod carefully, the whole thing would come crashing down on her the moment she dug her claws in. She learned very, very quickly to be polite around the curtains. I think there's a certain amount of risk in having stuff fall on the little ones, but there's also the risk of injured toes with latches. I think it'll be up to you and what you're most comfortable with in the end.

You might also want to look at magnetic latches (http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-13500-Plastic-Magnetic-Catch/dp/B000FKDFZ2). I like them in general because you open the cabinet by pushing it rather than prying at the latch.

Tupperware, gladware, rubbermade all make containers that require no installation, no pinched toes, fingers, things making noise to scare anyone and are cheap, disposable, different sizes and can get them at almost any store and at some hardware stores too. When empty might make a toy for someone.......

You all rock and more so because nobody made fun of her toys name's lol...My hubby looked at me today as if I grew a second head when I told him I posted this to see what we should do and he said "YOU TOLD THEM THE NAMES?" They are just nice to you because you are crazy  ;D :D I said " No they all have dogs and cats too and know we all name the toys" Anyhow all the ideas are awesome..I personally am so not into huge ugly locks just for a  wayward cat. I have these like tupperwear things I will try first before I go with the magnetic stuff which would be my second to third choice cause it would not be all ugly ...not that my house is that great but by the time Mr Fix it put the locks on I bet I would have huge holes in the cupboards...HE doesn't want to scare her with cans.....these would be pop cans they are light....so for now the 3 toys she's after are in the plastic fake Tupperware crap....WHY oh why is she so demonic (I often wonder about her name too JJ) she is um indeed very smart...too smart....Now I will worry shes in all my cupboards sitting on plates bare bottom on my plates...ewww ... or eating bags of chips...Thank you Catwoods yes she was a winner and also won some catnip...shes lucky and diabolical....

Um btw I am myself a bit of a healthy eater...so do not think we just sit and eat junk all day lol.....all my posts lately have cheetoes and chips in them

Bucky is a good boy he would not teach bad habits ever .....we love Bucky and want him

Again thank you to each person who posted I may not have mentioned your name cause I am in a rush and type slow but read all the posts and plan to move from thing to thing if need be....

Pretty soon I may have to put HER in a huge hamster ball that rolls around the house to keep it safe...

Then today she playing but scratched my husband really hard and long and deep...blood all over my comfortor.....grrrr to both of them.....

All that said she is damn cute MOST of the time

Oh, bad Mewsette, scratching your Daddy like that!  However, I understand accidents happen.

Bella scratches me pretty good at least once a year.  ;)

I don't know if she's as demonic as this one kitty my roomate had, long time ago. He grabbed a loop of berber carpet in the apartment and just ran and ran. We had a huge unraveled hole by the time he was done. Hopefully, Mewsette won't get to that stage  :D.

Lol OMG Merrihart I pray we do not have that kind  of thing past this year..Ya know my other cats NEVER nailed me...though I had them before I had the hubby and maybe they would have nailed him too  :D

Bug noooooo lmao she better not do that.  I am lucky we have all hardwood floors ...however she has chewed the shade in her bedroom this winter under the curtains so I didn;t know it till we had a nice summer like day in my very winter like state.....4 chops.....all in a row..I will give her credit it's almost as if she did it as a design....

BTW she nailed dad again today  ;D

Oh my goodness, SandyBeach!  You and your DH have your hands full!   :D  That must be so funny to watch her go into the cabinets and take what she wants!

LOL August we love her so much but she is demonic at times...We never catch her doing it though as all we would have to do is hiss and she would run......we just find her toys noo longer in the cupboard or catnip out,,,,she has her own bedroom and we have found my dog's stuffed bunny in there.....and no its not him he is always with me...the girl is sneaky
