Title: Adding taurine to baby food
Post by: JustMe on March 09, 2011, 05:49:19 PM
Does anyone recall how much taurine would need to be added to a jar of baby food?  Thought there were posts here about that.

These are the small jars of Gerber meat and broth only.

JM, I have to apologize. It's late and I can't even think straight right now. The minimum amount of taurine required for cats is 10 mg/kg bodyweight/day. It's OK to provide more as there is not upper limit in the NRC book. NRC recommended allowance in food is .4 g/kg DM (400 mg/kg dry matter). AAFCO requirement is much higher.

ETA: Argh. Again. the 400 mg/kg DM is for highly digestible foods. Canned cat food is 1700 mg/kg DM and dry is 1000 mg/kg DM. Amt per kg BW^.67=.0099 g, which is essentially 10 mg/kg bodyweight. All from NRC.

JM- what mg is your taurine ? If its capsules of 500 mg you can try opening & using 1/4 capsule per jar if its a 2 oz jar.

If thats all he's eating, start with 1/4 -1/2 & if he will eat it slowly up it. If you put the taurine in the bowl & just add a tiny bit of baby food its easier to mix. Then add the rest of the baby food & stir. You can do the same with any hard vitamins by crushing them.
