Title: How do I get Smoggy to drink more water?
Post by: NedF on February 17, 2011, 08:21:25 PM
Smoggy has very concentrated pee and the vet told me to feed him wet food so his urine will be more diluted. Unfortunately, he absolutely refuses to eat wet food! He will lick a little of my homemade but he just won't eat any canned. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. I have several water bowls around but I rarely see him drink and I'm getting concerned that he will have kidney problems later on, especially since he already has a history of uti. I have been looking at those drinkwell type fountains but I don't know which one to try. I catch Smoggy in the kitchen sink several times a day (he knows he's not allowed up there) and I think now that he's trying to get water either off the dishes or from the faucet.

Hopefully the fountain will entice Smoggy to drink more. Can Smoggy have fish/sardines etc? Maybe the juice (several drops) from sardines or some other oily fish put into the water will entice Smoggy? Our water here is not that great so Foxy Lady drinks either Ice Mountain purified water or one from Poland that has minerals in it.

Does Smoggy like the baby food meats?  After Mandy's bladder surgery, the surgeon wanted me to get her to drink more water even though she gets only wet food.  Her urine specific gravity was 1.045, and, although that is in the normal range, vet surgeon said she would like it a little lower.  I watered down chicken baby meat and she lapped it right up.  I think there is a thread here where the water fountains were discussed.  I don't use one, but others who do will probably give you some suggestions.

I had forgotten all about baby food! And I used to use it all the time with Thunder. I'll get some of that tomorrow. I was also thinking of tuna juice but I'm not overly fond of tuna. I'll try that if the baby food doesn't work.

How about salmon in spring water, no salt added? Home made chicken broth?

For wet foods, have you tried Weruva or similar food which contains quite a bit of gravy? Sometimes when served from a can it can be more interesting and the cat will just lap up the liquid and leave the solids if the food is not judged to be acceptable, while on a plate won't touch it at all. In this case of course you have to make sure there are no sharp edges on the can.

I boil chicken, separate the liquid and cool it, skim off the fat then freeze it in little containers.  I don't add anything, it's just boiled chicken water.  After thawing, I usually can thin it down a lot with water and they will still drink it.  It might not work for Mr. Picky Smoggy Boy, but might be worth a try.

Have you seen this?

And this one looks like a great fountain to me (don't know about this color but):

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Pet-6022-Drinking-Fountain/dp/B00329RZFE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1298015019&sr=1-2

To be honest, to me, water fountains are a major pain in the butt + expense,... but the kitties really do drink a ton from it so I can't get rid of it.  I have a plastic Catit one and I recently raised it off the ground and now they are drinking even more since the waterfall is right at face level.

Also, you might try various types of water bowls if you don't want to get a fountain.  Some like clear bowls, some white bowls, some metal bowls,...  It seems to me that my guys generally like drinking from a very big, clear water bowl, I guess because the water tastes better (I clean and refill it every morning).

My neighbor used to use a rather shallow metal water dish for her cats but they weren't drinking (and one of them got a UTI) so she switched to a clear deeper one and they started drinking more.

spartycats, that's awesome LOL

Ned, maybe he wants really cold water?  'Bisi licks the side of my ice tea glass when it sweats.  I think she likes her water really cold.  I'm going to try fridging water instead of using it straight from the sink for her.

Problem with that of course, is that I'm not home for a good 10 hours a day.

I do the broth or stock too & its worked for both Punkin & Remy. I also got a catit fountain & they all drink out of it. http://www.petsmart.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=catit%20fountain&origkw=catit%20fountain&sr=1 (http://www.petsmart.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=catit%20fountain&origkw=catit%20fountain&sr=1). I have the small 1 on the right & its pretty easy to clean. The bubbling action helps for dogs & cats who only want fresh water. [it can get a scum buildup in the pump, but you can open it & rinse it with hot water]. I clean mine twice a week & wash out the pump once a week, & just add filtered water as needed otherwise. I also have water bowls in almost every room to encourage drinking.
If you bake any meats for you or them, just put a tiny bit of water in the pan instead of greasing the pan & your broth will be very low in fat. Easily skimmed off after refridgerating it. Also try clam juice instead of tuna water, you can buy it in bottles [it does have salt]. Or the liquid from canned salmon or sardines canned in fresh water.

You could always put ice cubes in a water bowl and leave a frozen one next to it - the ice cubes will chill the one and as the other melts, it'll be attractive and cold...

If Smoggy is interested in the sink, than maybe he really is thirsty/wants water and just doesn't like the bowl for some reason. Some cats like running water, hence the popularity of the fountains. What if you let the sink drip a little and see if he sneaks up there to drink.....? That may tell you if he'd be apt to use the fountain..

When I had to try to transition Oscar to mainly wet, it took trying a big variety of flavors of canned, :P  but I found too that if I gave him a  little kibble on the plate next to some wet food, he would eat the kibble first, then, appetite being stimulated, he'd actually go on to eat the wet food.
I also found tuna water a good way to get liquids in.....
Good luck with Smoggy's diet change/liquid intake......come on little kitty cooperate and like the nice canned food!

Ned, when Sophs was having her crystal problem, we ended up ordering the Drinkwell Original Pet Fountain and she really uses it alot, we see her drinking alot more water than we used to...ug..as I just typed that Im now worrying about why she's drinking so much water....but anyhow she really does use her fountain alot and we didnt think she would touch it.  We did buy a Sink Drink but she didnt really care for it but Smoggy might like it, Sophers is used to being able to drink straight from the fountain and to her, the Sink Drink was just in the way.  With KiKi we would set large wide coffee cups of water in areas on the floor that she frequently passed by and that worked great for her, they were wide enough and heavy enough that she couldnt knock them over...although she thought every coffee cup was hers eventually..but hey, whats mine is theirs and whats theirs is theirs!  :D

I have two of the regular Drinkwell fountains, and my cats LOVE them.  I also bought the more expensive one, the large gray one, and don't like it nearly as well. It much more inconvenient to fill, heavy and awkward to carry etc.  I see no advantage to spending extra money for it, quite the contrary.
The regular Drinkwell fountains have an extra water container/reservoir that you can buy to add to the back and it works wonderfully well.   The D fountain has a nice long stream of water, which my cats all love to lick from, nobody ever  drinks from the bowl if I have it plugged in.
I also got them to encourage extra drinking, and they worl.  (Barkley, however, did not enjoy it. )

Coming from a shelter where I observed there were many Drinkwell Fountains around, I put out the one I had purchased in the past. Previous cats didn't use it but Raleigh drinks out of it alot. Max, not so much.
I keep a few large plastic drinking cups around the house and change out the water each day. They both drink out of those. Previous cats used them also.

It sounds like Smoggy has a very low thirst drive, like one of our cats. If so, the only solution may be to feed wet even though he does not like it.

Have you tried feeding wet food and sprinkling some of his favorite kibble on top. The kibble smell seems to override the wet food, at least it does with our cats. If that works you can slowly reduce the amount of kibble you add till you get down to three or four pieces.

Or, since he likes the sink, try running the faucet run very slowly. If he likes then he may take to the tray that August linked to.  Anyway, hope you can find a solution. I remember our Smokey would love kibble but I'd never see him drink. His urine was very concentrated too. But the kibble on the wet food worked.

Wow! So many ideas! Thanks everyone! I have made a list of things to try. I'm glad that people have had success with fountains since I have ordered a fountain for Smoggy and I hope it will be okay. It's stainless steel and I think he prefers ceramic but too late to change my order.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037NKDSG/

I've tried using room temp water and cold water from the fridge and it doesn't seem to make a difference. When I tried different bowls, he used the ceramic bowl rather than their usual stainless steel (I can hear him drinking from it right now!). He likes drinking water from the kitchen sink faucet. I only have one sink so I can't use the Sink Drink (and I don't really want Smoggy hanging out in the sink). I would love to have one of those motion detector faucets if I had an extra sink!

I'm a little worried about him right now because he's got some nose crusties, sneezing and a squinty eye so I hope he's not coming down with something.

A few people on here have posted in past threads that they put glasses of water around on the floor and tables, and some cats seem to really like that better than bowls.  Maybe try some water glasses, along with the ceramic bowls & chicken broth (and all of the other items you're ordering!)

I hope it works Ned, we sort of have that problem with Sophs too but the fountain seems to have helped.  Let us know how it goes!

How's Smoggy doing?  Hope it was just a little nasal irritation :-*

I don't see anymore nose crusties, but he is still squinting his right eye. He seems ok otherwise, maybe sleeping more than usual and not playing as much.

Here's the new fountain:

"Yuck! I don't want any!"

They aren't all that interested in the fountain. They have used it but they seem to be using the ceramic water bowl most often, and are ignoring their usual steel bowls.

The little stinker, look at that face!  Hey Ned, do they have any plastic toys that you could put in the new fountain, I was wondering if that might attract them to it?

I hope Smoggy gets to feeling better, can you tell if he is running a fever?

That looks like a pretty neat fountain, Ned.  Maybe Smoggy will get more interested in it when he feels better.  I hope that is really soon!

That is a very cool fountain!  Looks almost like a decorator one. Typical cats, though, if they think it's something you want them to do, they won't.

Is there any possibility that Smoggy's nose/eye issues are some kind of allergy to something in the air?  Pollen?

Don't give up on the fountain, yet.  It can take several days before they get used to it.

Fizzy's right!  I remember with Sophers new fountain, it took several days, maybe even close to 5 days before we saw her go over and drink out of it.  Plus, maybe they are sneakers...you know, sneaking drinks when you arent looking.  Even now with Sophs if she knows we see her, she stops drinking....I guess its a cat thing. lol

I pulled a long piece of cat hair out of Smoggy's eye last night so I hope that was the problem and it will feel better soon. If not, I'll have the vet take a look at him when Stormy goes for her annual exam.

Now there is a problem with the fountain. It seems like something is interfering with the pump and it is making louder noises and has stopped moving water a couple times. I did find some long, fine cat hair in the water so I'm wondering if it is getting caught in the pump? Anybody ever have this problem? I don't see how I can keep the hair out of the fountain since both kitties shed a lot of fur daily!

Are you able to disassemble the pump?  Our Drinkwell would make various noises after cleaning it, but it never actually stopped pumping.  Cat fur shouldn't be a problem, as long as you have some type of strainer or filter that the water flows thru before hitting the pump.

You might need to ask for a replacement if the pump won't work.

Hair & scum from the water clog the Catit fountain pump. I can pull the ends of the pump off & theres a plastic filter there that can be rinsed out. You may want to check yours & see if its the same. Usually you will notice its not pumping as strongly when it starts to clog & will soon stop or make loud noises.

I have had no problems at all with the Drinkwell fountain and Sophs has a LOT of hair...hair, hair, everywhere!

Post by: NedF on February 26, 2011, 09:42:30 PM
The fountain stopped pumping today so I took it apart and I can see there is hair tangled around the impeller so the filter on this thing doesn't work very well. There isn't any way to get the hair out of the impeller so I'm going to return the fountain and maybe get a drinkwell or build my own. I also pulled out a small piece of what looked like shredded black plastic. Since I shut off the fountain, Smoggy's been getting into the sink and meowing for me to turn it on for him. He's such a spoiled boy!

Well Smoggy has his own 'personal' fountain person to turn on the faucet when he wants his water!
