Title: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: Sandi K on December 31, 2010, 08:38:16 AM
We got one of these for Sophers and oh my goodness, she goes nuts for it.

https://www.nekoflies.com/

The fly we are using is the Kragonfly which looks just like a real dragonfly with little wings and she loves it!

https://www.nekoflies.com/flies/kragonfly-cat-toy.html

We've only used it a couple of times so we dont know how well it holds up or anything but Sophs gives it a definate paws up rating.  We ordered ours thru litterboy.com and the shipping was really fast.

We got one of these several months back.  I have to put it away and bring out only from time to time, or the cats will exhaust themselves!  My cats go nuts for the Neko Flies, too.  I bought mine in a local "pet boutique."  We have the ones without feathers (my cats EAT feathers!)

I can see why you had to put it away, she just went crazy to the point she was breathing pretty hard and didnt want to stop so we put it up for a while last night to get her to calm down.  I think they ought to make a butterfly fly!  :D  In a effort to get to it while her and DH were playing she jumped right smack into the middle of her tunnel and collapsed the tunnel so its not looking so great now, lol

We have the small Kittenator (mouselike one) and the Katarantula.  Yes, they will exhaust themselves unless you limit the use.

August, which flies are you ordering?  Sophs had playtime again last night and the "kragonfly" is most definately her favorite!  Just make sure you put it up when its not playtime, lol   :D

I've been looking at them and wondering which one/s to try.

Do you know if those will easily hook onto a Da Bird wand?  Is there anything special about the Neko wand?

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys

I hooked them onto another wand that I had without buying the Neko wand, and they seem to work just fine.

Does the Da Bird wand have a swivel attachment on the end?  That is how they hook onto the Neko Fly wand.....

I found it being sold in Japan so I thought what the heck!   :D

I got the dragonfly, the mouse, and the tarantula.   8)

We'll see how it goes but who am I kidding?  Even a piece of raw spinach on the floor excites the Tinies LMAO.

LOL August, I think those kittens are going to go nuts over it.  I cant wait til you get it and tell us their reaction.   :D

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: August on January 06, 2011, 11:23:10 PM
Well, sheesh, what's not to like about this!   ;D

It's a fluttery toy thing on a fluttery wand string!  Show me a kitty who doesn't go berserk for that!

Human plus points are that the wand is easy and comfortable to hold.  Also, the parts seem to be a lot more rounded and "safe feeling" than other similar toys.  Actually, I'd like to inspect it more and give a better report, but I can't since there is no way that I can get my face close enough to the thing unless I lock myself into a closet.  LOL

There was a lot of growling and monopolizing and running away with the toy (we are using the dragonfly right now since that's what was attached when it arrived).  Whoever wasn't chomping down on the toy (which in our case meant nine others) would just sit and watch in awe.

One big difference for this toy is that the actual toy has the string part attached to it.  So the pieces are a wand / a toy with a string (as opposed to the wand with the string, plus a toy that attaches on).  This is good for if the string breaks or gets chewed apart -- you can just buy a new toy (and it has a new string on it).

Although because the toy's string hooks onto the wand, sometimes the kitties would hear the jangling of the hook (at the base of the wand) and get temporarily confused LOL.  But I prefer that waaay more than having the hook at the toy end and going into kitty's mouth!

But this is a great, fun toy!  10 paws up!  Or would that be 20 paws up?

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: Sandi K on January 07, 2011, 08:39:24 AM
LOL August, if yours really, really like it, Im guessing they would want their back paws included in that tally, making it 40 paws up! Wow, thats practically a whole army!  :D

Sophers likes the dragonfly best tooand she still is going nuts for it.  We got the spider which she doesnt care for but she doesnt like real spiders either...wants meowm to get them for her, lol  There was one called the kittycada if I remember correctly that we havent tried, it was out of stock when we ordered.  We also tried the little furry one but that wasnt a favorite either.  Its funny because Sophers also gets side-tracked by the sound of the jangling clasp thing too, she likes to bite it.

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: August on January 07, 2011, 10:47:49 PM
LOL about the spiders!

We've still only tried the dragonfly and it's already pretty mangled - course, I guess that's expected when you have at least 6 monsters after it.  I'm guessing the mouse is going to be a hit for Mooch (he also likes the dragonfly).

It's great -- Tinies and Larges, they all really like it.

Fhizzy especially loves it and growls and trots away with it.  She'll be very serious growling with it in her mouth and then when she hears the clasp jangling a few feet away, she'll look up like WTF?  It's pretty funny.  I'm looking forward to trying out the mouse and the spider.  I didn't notice the kittycada you mentioned -- that must supposed to be like a cicada beetle.  I'll bet that would be fun!

August, that so cute, I bet its fun to see their reactions to it.  Sophers hawls hers away too.  She grabs it and then walks off, with it dragging behind her...and she holds her head real high when she's doing that, sort of like she is real proud.  :D

All three of mine are crazy about this, we got Kragonfly and I think I'll get other attachments too. I just cut off elastic green string bits before giving it to them, but the toy itself is surprisingly durable, it survived Sophie catching it and carrying it around and she is not exactly gentle with her toys.

I ordered from www.puuttypower.com , they also have some nice cheap (much cheaper than what I can buy locally) peacock feathers, Sophie loves the feathers.

Well, our Kragonfly only has 2 wings left on it now...its from some pretty intense playing sessions, lol  I guess pretty soon it will be flying in circles as the wings that are left are all on one side.   :D

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: August on January 16, 2011, 12:20:16 AM
We love our Neko Flies... and thought we should report a small problem.

Our Kragonfly lost half its wings a while back  ::) but our problem is actually the tail.  It got really shredded to the point where it was like a bouquet of very thick dental floss, and it has gotten caught in between Tuesday's teef twice!  I mean, this is proof that the toy is fantastic and the kitties go nuts for it, and maybe Tuesday is just putting that much more effort into getting it since he's got so much competition, but I've had to catch him twice in order to remove the toy stuck in his teeth!

Maybe it is time to retire Kragonfly!   ;)  Or, cut off the tail?   :P

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: August on January 16, 2011, 05:11:47 AM
Retirement is the likely solution since there's not much left of him LOL.

I'll have to try out one of the other attachments!

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: catbird on January 16, 2011, 07:19:52 AM
The wings on the Kragonfly were the exact reason I selected other products in the line for my cats.  I have very destructive (or effective?) little predators who pull things apart, like ripping into prey...I think the wings would have lasted about .2sec in this house, so avoid anything that looks like they'd destroy it quickly.

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: Sandi K on January 16, 2011, 10:46:36 AM
Thankfully, Sophers doesnt pull at the wings, she just likes to jump and run after it....soooo....it appears we will be ordering a couple more replacements, LOL When the wings fall off she thankfully just ignores them and leaves them on the carpet so we have plenty of time to get to them and toss them out but I can see where some kitties might eat them if they got to them. We might try the kittycada too this time.  But you are right, catbird, they did fall off pretty quickly.

DH and Sophs have playtime sessions every evening, we really believe these playtime sessions are helping keep her immune system stimulated and working better than it otherwise would even though its still not the greatest.   I should note these playtime sessions are with a variety of toys, not just these Neko flies.

Our mousie survived two playtimes before it was completely mangled!  LOL!

Here's a photo of our Kragonfly.  We are currently on our last attachment - the spider.  If I so much as show them the handle of the toy, they go nuts!   :D

August, that is hysterical!  Its funny you posted tonight in this thread, we just got our new attachment, the kittycada.  Its a hit!  Her kragonfly is missing its rear and two of its wings.  We ordered a replacement for that as well as she just loves these toys, lol  I can only imagine how fast yours must wear out, the poor toy is getting ganged up on with the number in your crew!  ;D

My pet food store has these in stock now...and it's Kozy's one month forever home anniversary, so guess who got a present today!  In less than 5 minutes he punctured the plastic wings with his teeth and I was afraid so I took it away from him :-\  He also wants to chew on the string.  But he really wanted to catch it when I had it out, so I'll consider it a Hit.  I'm just paranoid that he's going to get hurt, or swallow something.  How fragile are these things?

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: Sandi K on May 04, 2011, 03:31:45 PM
Well Sophs has been through about 2 of the Kragonfly's so far.  The wings do eventually come off, but so far she hasnt eaten any of them.  I wouldnt leave it out when you arent playing but she loves it, it really imitates real dragon flies very well.  She has the small Kittenator too and likes that but just not as much as the Kragonfly.  I think the Kittenator holds up better.

Happy One Month Forever Home Anniversary, Kozy!  Wow its already been one month?  Do we get to see Happy One Month Forever Home Anniversary pictures?   :D

Knowing my predatory, dismantling little beasts, I took one look at the Kragonfly and decided that the Kittenator would hold up much better!  We have it out only when we are playing with the cats, and we have had it about nine months.  So far, it's stayed together.

ETA:  I don't know what happened to our Katarantula.  I haven't seen it in awhile.

Unfortunately both Wednesday and Fhizzy want to chew and eat the string part, so I haven't bought any new attachments (and all the ones we did get are completely mangled and have since gone through retirement).

This toy is a big hit -- I wish they would make the string part of the toy out of something more durable.

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: alek0 on May 04, 2011, 08:47:16 PM
I normally cut the strings on the Kragonfly, they still go crazy over it.

The string my guys want to eat is the part that holds the toy to the wand.   :P

Yeah, I think the Kittenator would probably be better for Kozy, too.  I should have known how destructive he is after watching him demolish the foam golf balls.  We played with the Kragonfly last night but he constantly grabbed it in his mouth and tried to run away with it.  I'm surprised he didn't lose any teeth :-\

Wow, is he related to Sophers?   :D  She takes it away too, its so cute seeing her dragging the whole thing behind her down the hallway, its like its prey she caught, she has her head up high and proud and keeps stopping to look behind her at the wand & string thats following her, lol

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: Fizzy1 on May 05, 2011, 09:18:36 AM
Aww, that sounds cute!  It might be cute with Kozy, but he tears off at such a breakneck speed, I'm afraid of whiplash :P

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: Sandi K on May 05, 2011, 09:41:52 AM
Oh yeah if he runs away with it, thats a different story, lol  Sophs just tugs and then DH lets it go and she hauls it away.  She always wins no matter what.  ;)

The Kragonfly is a real winner in our house.  Those transparent yet slightly reflecting wings must look pretty darn convincing to the cat.   Only bringing it out once in awhile so the effect doesn't wear off  ;D   Don't want her to ever realize it's not real.

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys
Post by: Sandi K on September 26, 2011, 02:36:55 PM
LOL rabuer, the only problem in our house is the wings dont last long, right now the one she is playing with only has 2 wings left, thankfully she doesnt eat them.  I think its a great idea to put it away every once in awhile, Sophs is kind of off her kragonfly right now...I guess its kragonfly burn-out.   :D

I had to come back here to say that I got more attachments for my Neko wand, and yeah, this truly is an awesome toy.  I have a few different long toys like this but this (and Da Bird) win hands down.  (But you must use this as an interactive toy and put it away when you're finished with it!)

My krakonfly has lost a leg and all his wings are curled up in a sad crumpled way.   ;D

Day one of Neko toy - Bubba chewed through the string (he l had no interest in the krakonfly, just walked very purposefully up to the toy to bite through the string. He was most satisfied with himself).  No more toy.   :(

I can only use Go Cat Teaser toy - they can't chew through the wire on those.

One of my girls managed to chew off the butterfly from the toy Spartycats was talking about . . . It seems as if nothing is safe around here!  :-\

Yeah, like I said, it's got to be interactive and monitored throughout.   ::)

(sorry off topic) Spartycats - we like the metal Go Cat, too, but be careful - the wire easily unwinds and becomes tiny sharp wires after chewed.   :P

Ay yi yi, Neko has some new flies for the toy!  Foxifur, Kattipede, and Kiticatterfly!  I just ordered them for Sophs.  Foxifur looks sort of like the original Kittenator but it appears more "mousey" looking, kattipede is a sort of centipede looking creature and kitkicatterfly looks like a butterfly!  Oh boy, something for Sophs to attack, other than me! Yay!  ;D

Title: Re: Neko Flies cat toys

Hmm, I think Foxifur just went on the gift list for my cats and my daughter's cat! The others would last about 5 min in either household, I'm afraid.

I'm gonna have to take a look at the kattipede, considering how fascinated my kitties are with the real thing!  :D

Well Kitikatterfly is a huge hit...so much so that when DH was playing with her and then got side-tracked and stopped, she went over and yowled in his face, lol   Play some more, dad!  Yes, forgive me, Your Highness Sophers.   :-*  :D

We had a problem last night with one of these toys.  Not saying its the toy but just watch out.  Sophs was getting revved up and charged at it while it was on the ground and she got it wrapped around her.  DH was holding the wand but she took off and it snapped the wand in half.  She took off running with the other half of the wand flying behind her and she was going so fast we couldnt tell where the string was hooked on her.  She ran down the stairs, back up, behind the couch, down the hall, into the bedroom, then under the bed.  The whole time I was petrified worrying that she was going to hang herself or break a leg.  DH reached under the bed to try and cut it away and thankfully it just fell loose on its own so we were able to get it.  But poor Sophs was so freaked out she ran into the living room and went under the couch and wouldnt come out.  DH finally had to lift the couch so I could reach in and pull her out.  She was upset the rest of the night and slept really late this morning.  Too much excitement.  So anyway, just watch out and be careful to not let these get wrapped around your kitty.

When I play with Beau, sometimes it wraps around his tail.  The tail acts as a axis or a tether and the string will wrap around the tail.  Beau gets very confused when this happens and wonders where the litter critter he was chasing went, he's never panicked about it, so not sure if that's what happened to Soph or not.

Also, every once in a while, when the angle is right, Beau manages to pop the string off the wand and he takes off running with it.

Sandy, I'd contact the company about the broken wand.  The only time I've managed to break the wand is when I accidentally sat on it.  Sophs doesn't weight much more than Beau does.  It shouldn't have broken.

merrihart, I hadnt thought about telling them that the wand broke, I think I will, its a good idea.

Thanks to that episode my neck is now out of whack, from being on the floor trying to convince her to come out from under the couch.  She has fully recovered now.  I have scratch marks to prove it.  ;)

Ever since Alek told me about the Neko flies, I've always wanted to get one, and well - finally did. Got the centipede. Oh my god, what fun! The cats went absolutely crazy, especially Monkey. He jumps so high and has zero regard as to where he falls. I am a little afraid he's going to hurt himself if he falls against a chair or table so we are trying to take it easy. But this is such a de-stress therapy for all of us, it's really impossible not to laugh at their antics when the toy is in motion! Will definitely get other attachments!
