Title: Ringing in the New: Your Pet Family in 2010
Post by: catbird on December 30, 2009, 07:51:20 PM
Our January pet picture theme thread is "Your Pet Family in 2010."  Now is the time to take some new pictures and post them here.  Challenge:  Try to get of as much of your pet family as you can get in one photo!  (Easier for some members than others LOL.)  But single pet pictures are great, too. Post your new pictures!

LOL I can think of a couple of people who would need some kind of x-ray scanner to get a picture of all their pets at once, because it would have to go through walls into different rooms!  If they get even half their pets in one picture, it will be an amazing feat!

Well, it isn't easy, but here are six of my fuzzy family watching their feathered friends.  I really don't know who they all are, took it last week, but the one on the left is mother Sweetie Pie.

What a wonderful picture, BW.  Wow, those mallards are soooo lucky there's glass seperating them.

Catbird, that's a truly great idea and challenging one, I just wish I could get all of mine to get along let alone take a picture together.

Wow, those mallards are soooo lucky there's glass seperating them.

They seem to KNOW my cats are behind the glass, but if I step up to the glass, they all fly back into the lake.  They don't seem to get that I am the one throwing the food out for them.
I don't usually feed them, not supposed to where I am,  but when there is no open water, or lots of snowand bitter temps etc, I do.  I have a couple pair, one in particular, I call Mr. and Mrs.  that live here year round.  The rest come and go.

BW!!!  Oh my goodness - that is such an awesome photo!  BUWAHAHA!!!  They're all in their "If I crouch down, they can't see me" poses.  LMAO!!  Fantastic!   :D :D

I've got to get to work on my guys  :) .  I still have to wait a few more weeks to get the 100% healthy okay vet report for Sunday, and even then I still have to introduce her to the other 4.  Hey, maybe that will be my photo!  (Yeah, good luck, right?  ;)   )

ETA : I can't take my eyes off this photo!  Wow, I wish we had that kind of backyard.  That must be so fun for them!

That IS a wonderful photo, BW.  Their body language says so much. I can just imagine the thoughts going through their little minds.

Do they use their Catit?  Our cats are too busy to fit our Catit into their daytime schedule so they have to play with it at night. Usually between 12.30 and 1 am when the house is very quiet and any small noise wakes us. I think they do it on purpose.

LOL MarkT, your description reminds me of a "Cat Haiku" I read years ago (don't know original author; my thanks to them, whoever they are.)  It went something like this:

Now it's 3 a.m.
The Big Ones slumber deeply.
Time to play hockey.

Title: Re: Ringing in the New: Your Pet Family in 2010
Post by: BW on January 01, 2010, 08:22:56 AM
Yes, August, they really like to watch the critters, and so do I.  I really don't know how we all would have managed to live in my little house without this big sunroom.  Except for the livingroom cats who go back and forth, the cats all spend most of their time out there.  They can watch the winged critters, the squirrels, and birds.  It's not heated, so in winter I use an electric heater till the sun comes up and heats it through all the sliders.  I have my computer out there too, and this morning it is cold as all get out, a gray day with no sun.  I have the heater right by me, and still, I think it is time to go inside.
The cats keep making forays out into the sunroom, to watch the ducks a little bit and then ask to come back into the kitchen where it is warm.
BTW,  OT, Aleko, is that one of those oil filled heaters in the photo?  Do you like it?  If so, what kind is it?  Your kitties look soooo comfy by it.

Thank you everybody, and Mark, my cats do play with the Catit, but not always when I see them, as you said.  Most of my guys seem to prefer the Turbo scratchers because they can reach the ball more easily, and some of them can really make that ball go around lickety split, round and round and round.
The Catit provides a slightly different challenge, and so the younger ones play with that now and then.  My older cats have developed great skill with the Turbo scratchers, and so enjoy those more.  I have 10 turbo scratchers.  I have started making my own cardboard inserts because they have become so darned expensive here now, and they seem to come unglued much more easily lately, don't last more than a couple weeks, and then I have to spend another $8 for a new one.  Sooooo, I put my own round pieces of cardboard in the middle now.
Sorry, this is OT.

Great photos, everyone!
Those ducks are quite beautiful, BW, and they have definitely put ideas into those cats' heads!
Alek, your cats always looks so cozy.
Mark, your two makes avery interesting picture as they pass each other on what appear to be different excursions.
Steve, Sash is lookin' nice and furry as he surveys the world. (And Brrr, BTW)

Catbird and Mark, ;D ROFL on the haiku. I've seen both before in various books, but have never seen an author listed.

I don't think my three loners will go for the group photo...

Mark, I just LOVE your catwalk for your kitties. Great picture!   :) How wonderfully handy you are.   Wish I had one like that, best I can do for fresh air is open the sliders and hope they don't destroy the screens leaping up to catch bugs on the netting.

The silver and black patterns are gorgeous on your kitten, and the marvelous round eyes peeking over his back are just beautiful.

Steve, Sash is becoming more gorgeous with every passing day with the winter coat, and looks wonderful framed in the doorway like that.  Very pretty photo indeed.  :)

Mark, I think your guys would like the round turbo scratchers.  Mine scratch on the round pieces of cardboard I put in the middle, and don't really seem to miss the commercial corrugated centers.  I cut cardboard out of the cases I get the Fancy Feast in, recycling :)  and I always put two in on top of each other. The cats don't seem to care and FREE is good.  Very often, I see someone sleeping in the middle of the turbo in the sunshine.  Doesn't look comfy to me, but what do I know.  :)

ChefG, it is great to see new photos of Oscar and Fozzy!  They look especially magnificent against that blue blanket.  Wow!

Steve, Sash can probably tolerate that weather because of that magnificent fur coat he wears.  As others have said, it seems there is even more fur there than there was before--which is amazing.  He looks very ready to greet the new year.

MarkT, that cat walk picture is very artistic.  Not only are your two Bengals stunning as usual, but I think with the point of view, angles, and cat poses, you could win a photography contest with that one.  Love that haiku, too.  Very true; I imagine mine thinking something like that every morning as I head off in cold and darkness to work, while they lounge in their favorite chairs.

BW, yes it is one of those oil filled heaters and yes I like it, I've been using it for years with no problems. It is quite adequate for Hong Kong weather, though if I lived in a colder place I guess I would prefer different type of heater.

MarkT, great photo!

Steve, Sash is looking very fluffy, with that coat I guess he doesn't mind the weather.

ChefG, beautiful kitties.

We have an oil filled portable like that to. They are nice they plug into a standard outlet and they have a auto thermostat. It's for the upstairs unheated room sometimes Sash goes up there and snoozes in the rocker next to it.  Otherwise his thick and plush winter coat keeps him toasty.  But with the temps we are having right now even his endurance is being tested out on the porch with the wind chills.  Wind chills could push 10 to 15 below tonight.   :P  The next heating bill isn't going to be cheap.

Steve, nice picture of Sash. But how do you keep the snow from blowing into your porch?

Sometimes some blows on to the porch and I just sweep it out.  The screening helps keep it minimal and I have the sides protected to keep rain and snow from blowing in from the sides.  Last week we weren't so lucky the floor was white with powder. That doesn't happen often. But we had a rare blizzard with lots of swirling winds blowing powder everywhere.

Alek, funny pictures! I love pictures of kitties sleeping on their backs - seems like the ultimate in trust and contentment.
Mark, nice blend of photos, and beautiful cats.

I actually got all three of my Lone Rangers in one photo today! Didn't plan it but when I opened a can of fish based food, they all converged on one spot. I sprang into action.... that might work for someone else, too.

But, I have to wait to post until we restore the old drive, which is where we keep the pictures. So no photos of my guys with fish in their whiskers, yet...

I'm also going to try the new catnip mouse to draw them together. I got it from the local animal group's sale - locally sewn! But who knows where the 'nip and the cloth came from. We've had a brief session with all three with this mouse before, and it was peaceful, so no worries for us there.

Nice composite there, MarkT.  Muskie looks quite disdainful of the others--I love the expression on her face.  Those Bengals certainly are long, lean machines.  This photo really shows that quality in JP.

Alek, the heater must be the secret...but I don't think it would work for mine.  We have one of those heaters that we use in our office area that is partly below ground level so gets chilly, but I've never seen mine react that way.  They hate each other too much LOL.

As to the temperatures, where I live we were not quite as cold as caylee this morning, but it was cold enough at -4 degrees F.  With the wind, the wind chill factor was -20 degrees F.  The northern central part of the North American continent, away from the oceans, is COLD.  (I shudder to think what it must have been where bug lives...   :o  )

catwoods, I'll be interested to see that picture!  (Fish would not work for all of mine, either.)

ChefG, oooh, fluff!  It must be nice and toasty to put your face onto one of those!   :D

Alex0, lol at that tummy!

Nice cropping there Mark. Cats sure do like those portable radiator type heaters. Do they only heat the immediate surrounding area or a whole room? Never had one but might consider it.

Title: Re: Ringing in the New: Your Pet Family in 2010
Post by: Mark T on January 03, 2010, 07:08:50 AM
Alek, it looks like your cats enjoy your heater as much as ours do. From what I can tell yours looks identical to ours.

catbird, yes disdainful is the word. She looks down from her castle on the bookshelves in full knowledge she is superior to them.

JJ, the heater does warm the whole room, and does it very well provided the room is not too large. On high it can really kick out some heat though we usually have it on a very low setting...just enough so Muskie is comfortable at night. I should add, the first one we bought leaked oil onto the hardwood floor the first time we used it. For anyone buying one I'd recommend putting it though its paces over a sheet of plastic or outdoors first...also it gave off a strong smell the first time we used it on high.

So as not to be too OT, here's another photo. I was trying to catch JP in the light from the embers of our wood fire but it did not not work and the flash went off.

JP's eyes look like they are 'lit' by the fire, instead of the flash if you look at the pic that way Mark.

Thanks for info on the heater and good advice to use plastic under it for first time use and maybe plug it in outside and run on high to get rid of the smell.

There...I did it... ;D
There is no way that Hidey would be in the same floor (never mind the same room) as the pups for an actual picture...although..At night Lovey sleeps with us--she knows to wait until Jack is quiet--Lucy doesn't seem to bother her anymore...Maybe I will take the camera to bed tonite and see what happens! (hmm..that sounds kinky--sorry) :P

Not really the theme, but since I took a photo of the boys yesterday, I thought I'd show you back then and now today.   :D

Yoyo on the left, Mooch on the right in both.

At about 3 months (at that time the only way to tell them apart was Mooch's white whisker that eventually fell out)

At 2 years and 7 months

I am always surprised when the ducks come WALKING across the ice to get the corn I throw out for them.  It is quite a long ways across the snowy ice, and you would think it would be much easier to just fly over, but no.  Here is a little parade of my duckies coming for their corn.  Sometimes they come walking over in a small little clump, all huddled together,  and sometimes in a long single file parade like this one.  It may take more energy to fly, and they may be conserving energy.  When I took this photo, there was a small area of open water available to them, but the rest of the lake was totally frozen and covered with snow.

August, yes, they are funny, they have such short little legs and they wobble, or toddle,  as they walk under the best of conditions, and they often stumble over the really rough patches in the ice.

Title: Re: Ringing in the New: Your Pet Family in 2010
Post by: petslave on January 09, 2010, 07:18:33 PM
OMG, it must be fun to feed the ducks and have them all troop over like that!  Do their numbers stay the same, or do some come and go all winter?  Hey guys, you're supposed to fly south!

Some ducks can only land on water, but I see mallards feeding in the fields here all winter.  They should be able to fly over and land on the snow.  I bet you're right about them conserving energy.  It does take a lot more to fly than walk.  Still, seems like they would feel more vulnerable hiking along like that!

Post by: catbird on January 09, 2010, 07:47:20 PM
Ducks are so much fun.   :D  Quite a few mallards stay here all winter, too--they congregate in one spot on a lake near a power plant, where the water is warmer and stays open.  I love your duck picture, BW!

Awww so cute that they just stroll over to get a 'bite' to eat at your place BW.

Title: Re: Ringing in the New: Your Pet Family in 2010
Post by: BW on January 10, 2010, 10:05:34 AM
They are mallard ducks, not geese.  And yes, I do enjoy watching them.   I have a group of about 15 that seem to spend most of the year here, on and off.   Next week it is suppposed to get warmer, high 30's and maybe even 40 one day.  I will stop feeding them then, when the ice is gone, and hope they fly farther south. I am not supposed to feed them, but only do it when the lake freezes over totally and it gets soooo bitter cold.  And lately it is so bitter cold farther south too.

Unfortunately, the few ducks that winter here bring friends after a few days of feeding, and I could not cope with the numbers.  I cannot feed all the transients on their way south. Nor should I interfere with their usual migration habits.
We have one pekin duck,  Patches, and I do always try to feed her because she cannot fly away.  If I feed her, of course, the others see, and come for food.  Everyone here seems to like Patches.  Here are a couple pics of Patches.

Patches is soooooo beautiful.  It's funny how quickly word gets out that there's food on the ground.  I keep my birdfeeders full during the winter.  I ran out the past couple of days since I was at the shelter, I no sooner got them filled and there were birds everywhere. I couldn't figure out how they all knew so quickly.

It's hard to decide if your cat did or did not want to pose for the camera, alleycat. In the first picture, he seems to be saying, "Look at me!"  But in the second, as JJ said, he seems to be trying to hide.  Or maybe just didn't want his napping interrupted.  :D

Just about qualifies for the 'together' label -
Otto: 'I will mesmerise you with my headlights into letting me join you'
Eppie: 'No way - its MY bed when meowmie's in it'

As you can imagine, Moocher was getting more and more hyper as he tore through his egg shell LOL.  Wet slobbery pieces of cardboard were flying everywhere -- until the other 3 got hyper watching Mooch hatch and started to swat at him which led to the start of a frantic race back and forth between my two apartment rooms.   :D

Would you believe - no nip at all.  The boy just LOVES fur.  I have to be really careful with him and fur toys or he will literally eat them.  He loves them so much that when he gets them he'll growl and trot around the room with it in his mouth showing the other 3 how cool he is, then he'll take it to his place of choice to lick it to death.    :)

Photo 1 Mooch : I am hiding in this paper sack.  You do not see me.

Photo 2 Mooch : Whoop.

Whenever we get a big delivery from overseas, there is always tons of wrapping paper inside.  That mound of wrapping paper then stays on my floor and is used as a big, fun playpen until the paper has become tiny pieces.  They love for me to grab a bunch of paper and run around whacking their butts.  They get so hyper and excited, it's hysterical.  I also include some paper sacks (handles cut) so they can hide inside and I can spank them.  They just love that!   :D   Then it becomes the favorite nap place.  And sometimes the shred the paper place.  And sometimes even the barf place.

Photo 2 : Mooch - "This box still rocks."

You may have heard of a muted trumpet, but there are also muted percussive instruments, too.

Photo 2 : Mooch "Huh?  I have some on my lip?  Did I get it?"

I'm feeling better and haven't thrown up today at all!  I only have two more days more of medicine, and then I'll start trying out my Vetbasis hairball gel. Yay!  I hope it will be yummy!

August does Mooch have a big head or is it maybe the angle of the camera when you took the pic? He just looks so 'big' in the latest pics, amazing what shots you capture!

LOL!  Gee, I never thought about if Mooch has a big head or not.  I guess maybe it's just the angle?  He's a big cat though, weighing about 13 pounds, and when he sits on my lap, I need the side of the chair and an arm to hold him on my lap!   :D

ROFLMAO!!!

What an ultramaroon (old Bugs Bunny)! That cat just kills me every time. I think I'd be busting a gut every day if he was my fuzzy.
