Argus Observer December 5, 2009

‘‘"The need is definitely up from last year,’’ said Connie Granbois, manager of Community Action Partnership Food Bank in Lewiston. ‘‘This year we are seeing new people every day.’’
"She said that last month the food bank distributed 990 turkeys, gave out 544 food boxes and served more than 2,700 households through the perishable food program.

"The food bank relies on donations.

‘‘"I just want to thank everybody for supporting the food bank,’’ she said. She said the food bank can always use breakfast items, canned food, baby items and pet food."

The Idaho Humane Society and Meals On Wheels have partnered to form the Pet Food Pantry, a program to collect pet food for pets in need. The Pet Food Pantry is an ongoing program to provide dog and cat food to families and individuals in need of assistance, maintain our pet food supply for Idaho Humane Society foster care families, and provide pet food to other local animal welfare organizations.

In order to help keep pets in their homes when their families are struggling financially, pet food assistance is available through a monthly distribution. The Pet Food Pantry can provide a household with food for up to four spayed and neutered animals for up to six months (If your pet is not yet altered, we can provide you with information on low-cost spay/neuter options). To apply for pet food assistance, visit the Idaho Humane Society shelter to submit an application and receive additional information.

NEXT FOOD BANK - SATURDAY, November 21st!
This has been a difficult year for so many. Our food bank has been a tremendous help to those in need of food for their treasured kitties. We have another one coming up soon, and can always use donations for this purpose. If you can, please help us by dropping off dry kitten or cat food at the adoption center, before November 21st. We hold our food banks on the first and third Saturdays of each month from noon to 2pm. Thank you for your support.

This is all that's on the website about the Food Bank; suggest you contact Simply Cats for more information.

If you are disabled, unemployed, on public assistance, or otherwise just short on funds and may need to give up your beloved family pet, please stop by the shelter.  We try to keep extra donated cat and dog food on hand to help feed the needy pets in our community!  This program depends entirely on dontations, and food may or may not be available at any given time.  Pet food donations gratefully accepted to enable this program!  PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN BAG OR CONTAINER!

Paws For Hunger

Paws for Hunger is the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley's partnership program with the Hunger Coalition.

The effects of the economy reach far beyond just people.  The sad truth is that when families go hungry pets go hungry too. Through the Paws for Hunger program the ASWRV collects donations to purchase pet food that is then distirbuted by the Hunger Coalition to help feed the pets of people in need.

This "pet food bank" has helped us control the number of animals entering the shelter by keeping pets with their families during their time of need.  In 2009 ASWRV distributed nearly 4000 lbs of food to the hungery pets in our community.  In 2010 we have seen the need for this service increase and we are on target to almost DOUBLE the amount of food distributed through  the Paws For Hunger program. With this striking increase in demand, we are in need of both monetary and pet food donations to support our Paws For Hunger program.

Unopened bags/cans of pet food and kitty litter can also be brought to the ASWRV.  We are located at 100 Croy Creek Road in Hailey, Idaho.

Contact them for more information.
