There is a lady up the road from Me, who just stopped to borrow something. She has always had too many cats, doesn't get them fixed, etc. I have taken food to them before.
But I told Her I hadn't seen Her cats around lately. she said they had all died. Of course, I askd what had happened. She said they had all started staggering around and throwing up. Sound familier? But She said they also had sores on their bodies?
I asked what She had fed them.she said Alley Cats.
She said they acted like they were poisioned.
Then I told Her they probably were, by the cat food. Some people are still not aware of this whole thing. I know, some live in a bubble.
But I was wondering about where the sores come into this whole thing?
I think it was the food, what do you all think?

OMG!!! That's horrible! Alley Cats is Diamond's own in-house brand. Mostly corn I think.

It does sound like a food problem. Unlikely all of them caught something & died. No idea what could have caused the sores though,too bad she didn't go to the vet with any of them.

This is really a horrible story. Alley Cat may not be a premium food, but I have never seen any reports of problems with it and I would be hesitant to automatically blame the food in this case. You described a situation where the cats were obviously not taken care of very well, so I would suspect some kind of viral or bacterial infection that was contagious could have killed these cats. The body sores suggest something like that, or even Feline Leukemia Virus comes to mind. Or a parasitic infestation. We really don't have enough information to do anything but speculate here, but it is just a shame that this woman may be well-intentioned in one sense, but actually did more harm than good if she never got vet care for these sick cats. They may have all died, but I doubt it was all at once and all on the same day. So, there may have been a opportunity for diagnosis and, perhaps, treatment for some of them.

It was all around the same time. And they wouldn't eat after they got sick. But you're right, She should have taken them to the vets and didn't.
Does FeLV cause sores?
No one will ever know for sure.

Maybe some kind of contact poisoning with ag sprays in the area? The sores sound like something caustic.

trudy, Yes, FeLV can cause mouth and skin sores as one of the symptoms. Most likely, an acute infection of some kind is a more reasonable explanation. However, because these kitties never had any vet care during their lifetimes, there were probably multiple problems that eventually caused their deaths. Sad. |

Trudy --- could someone have deliberately poisoned these cats? Maybe an irrate neighbor? I've heard of such things happeneing.

Good point! That is also an option if they truly did all get sick at the same time, but doesn't account for the sores, I don't think. But, as I said, perhaps there were other problems with the cats anyway.

http://www.talktothevet.com/ARTICLES/CATS/catpoisons.htmlI found that link. I wondered about intentional, too, but in rural areas, a lot of accidental poisonings occur, too, from farm chemicals. The sores don't sound like any food-related poisoning that we know of. It is very sad.

They are very irresponsible pet owners. they have dogs hitched out back.
I have been there only when She needed help with the cats. all of talking about vets didn't work. But Her husband is a mean drunk, so I don't go around there. they could have put anything out, who knows.

Well all those poor unfortunate lil babies are now at peace with no more pain and sickness. They are lucky to not have to endure any more treatment such as they had. So sad, especially when God said "take care of my animals."
