Thanks for thinking about us. CJ continues to get back to her old, grumpy (with the other cats) self. She's getting more resistant to taking her lactulose, but it's thick and syrupy so I'm sure it's not very pleasant. Even hisses at ME when she tries to get away and I follow her. That's my girl!  Roll Eyes

I keep reading about better foods, but I'm terrified to take her off of the Iams prescription since she is doing so well on it. I am giving her a teaspoon of lowfat natural yogurt each morning after the meds and she really loves that. Guess I'd better leave well enough alone.

Should be getting the results of the test for pancreatitis this week, but since she's been pooping without so much trouble the other issues seem to be resolving. (There is NOWHERE else I can be talking about poop without other people thinking I'm a total nutjob.)

Hope everyone else is doing well this morning (haven't checked yet).
Blessings

So glad to hear that CJ continues to improve.  Yes, when they get resistive, you know they are feeling better!  This is one case where grumpy is good.  Love ya, CJ!  You rule!

Catmom, have you tried putting the lactulose on her food?  I use an eyedropper and Fizzy doesn't seem to notice, except the one time I had the RX filled by the grocery store and all they had was green banana flavored!  Now, she Loves bananas but she hated that stuff!

I am so very happy to hear that CJ is feeling better.
I also hope those test results come back with some good things.

Okay, I'm doing something that I feel I need to do, but I'm a bit scared at the same time. CJ continues to struggle to poop and giving her the lactulose on top of her liver medicine has caused her to run away from me and dive under the bed! In addition, she will sometimes eat a bit of pumpkin, but not enough to get her going regularly. Finally, she has maintained her 13# + on 1/3 cup of Iams low residue. 1/3 cup! And her wonderful vets said to cut her portion by 1/3. I'm going to be counting kibble if it gets any worse. She cannot be getting the nutrition she needs from such a small portion.

I joined the yahoo IBD group yesterday and did some reading and researching. I do not want to have to deal with megacolon on top of everything else CJ has had to deal with SO I stopped on the way home for some canned Wellness and Core kibble. I gave three of the cats a bit of the kibble for "treats" and they ate it pretty well. I'm going to start offering a bit of wet morning and night before they get their kibble and see if I can get them off of the kibble once and for all. I'm concerned about the phosphorus levels of this food, but guess that if she has to take phosphorus binders, then so be it.

SO please wish us good luck. I've tried in the past and not done very well, but this is getting ridiculous and she's not feeling all that great right now.

Blessings

catmom5, I am sure you will find lots of good info from joining the Yahoo IBD group. Has anyone suggested that you try small amounts of psyllium husks powder in the food instead of pumpkin? That is what I use for Jasper.  Best Wishes and prayers being sent for you and CJ.

Catmom, I just went through terrible constipation with Kitt'n towards the end when her little body just kept shutting down.  Adding a fiber supplement to the food such as Benefiber can help a lot.  If CJ won't eat it in the food, you can mix it into a syringe and give it right before or after eating.  Other things that helps with constipation is subc fluids, which keep the intestine and rectum very moist to pass stool.  Wet food would be better than dry food to keep the stool moist as well.  How much Lactulose are you giving her?  You might want to confer with the vet to see what the max amount is.

When I had a cat with a broken back leg, the vet didn't want him straining so He gave him this - Vetasyl. It worked, whatever it is. I think it's like a stool softener.
