Fantastic!  Sometimes the little things can make all the difference!  (I swear by Nature's Miracle and similar products.)

I'm late to the thread as usual, but I'm glad they found a solution to Sammy's problem. Pee problems are no fun!

Wow glad we're not owned by this wife. I can understand not going in the litter box but cant they use newspaper until the meds kick in? Nothing like not giving another living, breathing, feeling animal a chance.

You know my sister as catmom5 and she directed me to this forum when I wrote her about Sammy, my co~workers 3 year old cat.  Sammy was having litter box issues due to a UTI.  Everything was going well, Sammy was using his box again and then he had a relapse.

My co~worker has informed me that they have made THAT decision, unless they can find another home or rescue who will take Sammy.  I am frantically trying to find a more workable solution for Sammy but I am feeling very helpless and have that horrible feeling in my gut this morning about Sammy's outcome.

I am asking for your prayers for Sammy.  Thank you.

I'm confused.  The "relapse" he had - do you mean he developed another UTI?  If so, can they treat it and then find him a home?  I hope I'm misinterpreting your post but they aren't going to kill the cat because he had a second UTI?

This is really a shame about Sammy. Getting the UTI problem under control might be a solution to the soiling outside of the litter box. I do not know what they are feeding him but wet food instead of kibble will help with the UTI problem. Grain based kibble can often times contribute to UTI's. http://www.msdivine.net/felinebeauty/uit.php        Since there is no way to know all that goes on in this household, it is really hard to make any other recommendations than the ones that have been posted previously.

Very sad for poor Sammy.  If they are not willing to continue working on the issues, can they be talked into re-homing Sammy, rather than putting him down?  Is there a no-kill rescue in the area that they could surrender him to?

Aaaw, sending many prayers for Sammy and that he will get the medical help he needs and a loving forever home.

ETA:  I agree with the above posters, getting medical help to re-treat the UTI and changing to a different high-quality wet food would probably go a long way to help this kitty.

I'm not sure what the story is other than he started peeing outside of his box again.  Mike is not easy to talk to today because it sounds like they have made up their minds.  They just can't deal with it anymore.  They have found several more pee spots and they have tried locking him up and he howls all the time {geez, I wonder why?}  And they've spent a lot of money to resolve this issue.

It's a good thing that my co~worker doesn't have a special needs human child...................okay, nuff said.  I'm not a happy camper at all.  This is upsetting to me and all I do is feel helpless and hopeless.

I don't know if I mentioned this in my original post but their vet suggested trying Prozac and the family is not willing to try it because they were told Sammy would be dazed and glassy eyed and it would be better for him to be PTS than to live his life like that......

I am trying to buy some time to find Sammy a suitable home or rescue that might take him.  I'm just praying that they don't make that awful decision before he's tried {I mean REALLY tried}.  I offered to help him make phone calls today and gave him a list of Michigan rescues he could try.  I'm really afraid that the family is just doing a knee~jerk reaction.

I would appreciate continued prayers for Sammy.

Sending tons of good thoughts that you are able to convince them to find another home for Sammy. Oh, and also that those selfish jerks never adopt another animal again.  Angry

KitKat you PM box is full Smiley

KitKat:
Urine pH is important
Specific Gravity also important
Urine culture results, if any are important.
Any crystals and the type are important

All this info comes from the urinalysis.

Water consumption must be encouraged.  I use a filtered water pitcher, Brita,  any minerals in tap and bottled water can add to  this problem.

Absolutely no dry food.  Took all 6 cats off of dry and it's been a miracle, in my house.  Wet food to be fed with tablespoon of filtered water added.  The more water, the more dilute the urine, less likely for crystals and bladder sludge to form.  Rufus was loaded with sludge and his bladder was covered with scar tissue from previous vets squeezing his bladder for urine samples.  They popped his bladder and scar tissue formed.  Rufus was diagnosed, via exploratory surgery, with interstitial cystitis.  Ultrasound and x-ray did not show any of this.

To his wet food, I also add a tea made from couch grass 1/4 tsp 2 times per day.  There os also a component called Tinkle Tonic that can be used in place of the couch grass tea.

Both products come from

---Medicinal Action and Uses---Diuretic demulcent. Much used in cystitis and thetreatment of catarrhal diseases of the bladder. It palliates irritation of the urinary passages and gives relief in cases of gravel.

I have recommended these products to many who are having the same issues.  With Rufus it took about a week to see the results.  My vet was thrilled with the results.  Rufus has an occasional outside the box, but considering what was going on prior, the results are amazing.  My friend was also diagnosed with interstitial cystitis and she is using the couchgrass tea with amazing results.

Rufus gets both the Tinkle Tonic and the tea.

Read through starting with page 5.  Following the surgery it got worse before it got better.
