Thanks for that info Shelleysmom, I hadnt heard of giving subq's after the I31 treatment, our KiKi had slightly low specific gravity too but the vet nor the I131 Dr ever mentioned that for her. She had her treatment many years ago though so maybe thats a newer protocol being adopted.

We brought Whitney home yesterday! She has a fairly average case, now it's wait and see. We'll go back to our regular vet at one and three months after treatment for blood work to make sure her thyroid and kidney numbers are looking good.
The biggest challenge seems to be getting the old girl to use new litter. I had to switch to flushable for the next three weeks (we're using Swheat). Protocol in California calls for flushing her radioactive waste down the sewer for the next three weeks. The other cats in the house are not happy either....so I've set up a second box for them inside a kennel that Whitney can't get in.
I also gave her sub-q fluids for the first time today. The needle went in easier than I thought it would. My hubby helped and we all survived, although I guess I was off a little to one side because it looked like most of the fluid ended up kinda leaning to the right. Is it best to hold onto the base of the needle (the plastic, not the needle itself) while administering? The vet tech who explained how to give the fluids said I could kind of gently massage the bump of fluid if it seemed to not be distributing well. Does it spread better if the flow is a little slower?
One last thought for the evening... Prayers to my sister, ChelsAndPhoebs, and all family, friends, fur babies and Itchmo members in the path of hurricane Ike. Be safe.

Yeah, Whitney is home! Bet she's glad to be out of there, but the accomodations did look pretty nice. Strange that you flush the used litter down the toilet! Guess the ocean is a nice big place and can hold all the toxic waste we can give it.
Congrats on your first successful sub-q session! I always held the plastic base on the needle during sub-q's to keep the needle from coming out. The lump on my cats always ended up down one leg then absorbed after awhile. I never tried to distribute it, but it might be more comfy for kitty not having to lug around a big bump of fluids glommed onto one leg for an hour.

Yah, I wasn't too happy about the stuff going down the sewer. I guess the good news is that the half life is 8 days, and it will sit in the sanitation district sludge tanks long enough to be safe for wherever it ends up.
I read that other parts of the country the waste is collected and turned in for safe keeping until safe to dispose of.
thanks for the tip on holding the needle

Happy to hear that Whitney is home and doing well. I, too, am surprised about flushing the litter! As for the fluids, I wouldn't worry if it settles on one side or the other. That is pretty common, and it will all be absorbed regardless. It might be more irritating to Whitney if you are trying to manipulate it too much while the fluid is going in. Just relax and let it go wherever it goes.

I'm so happy that Whitney is home and doing well.
Don't worry about the distribution of fluids. I give my cat fluids twice a week and the fluid "lump" often ends up on one side or the other or falls down one leg. Like mandycat said the fluid will be absorbed regardless of where it ends up. I find that my cat does not like me to touch or manipulate the needle once it is in.

Very glad to hear Whitney is home and doing well. Whew, bet your glad that part is over! Where we live, we had to hold the used litter in buckets with lids for at least 3 months and then could dispose of it at our local landfill......DH is a collector of buckets with lids, he will even pull the car over if he see's one on the side of the road... so we had plenty of buckets.
