Gosh, Sandi, it sure doesn't help that the appointment got messed us and the staff was unpleasant! With all you've been through.
But, that is good news about Sophers eating and perking up. Go, Sophers, strap on that feed bag!

Thanks everyone, I dont have much new to report. Its all so strange. I seem to be seeing some improvement in her but its only in the evening. During the morning and day, she doesnt eat enough but come evening, she is showing some perkiness and eats, etc. No word from the vet we saw on Wed but I did call the head vet at the original place and she is going to work up an outline of Sophies medical history and fit in the new symptoms and see if she and the 4 other vets there can come up with anything. She is also going to do some research including seeing if these little tiny flies we seem to be having an abundance of this year could be carriers of any viruses etc, she has also noticed them and Sophers was stalking and eating many of them before she got sick. So there just isnt much to report right now.

I was doing some research this morning and found this: http://www.cat-world.com.au/FelineHypertrophicCardiomyopathy.htmI remember Sophers had turned up lame a couple of months ago....I hope this isnt the explanation. Both vets listened to her heart and said it all sounded good but maybe it cant be detected by just hearing? With Sophers being Maine Coon, this has me worried. I need to quit reading on the internet, its freaking me out.

Sandi -Is there anywhere near you that can do an EKG to be sure ? Remy was also worse in the morning & I think it was going overnight without extra fluids. His heart murmer was worse while he was dehydrated & improved after the IV.The cardiologist & internist both said animals can present with heart problems just from the dehydration which resolve by themselves after fluids.

Hi Leslie, I will check with the vet, we are somewhat limited here with equipement, etc so I dont know but I will for sure run this by the vet. The new vet we took her to said she didnt feel dehydrated to him and we have been adding extra water to what she is eating.

Sandi,
Thank you for the update. I'm sorry to hear that Sophers is still not back to normal, but happy that some progress has been made.
I can understand your worries about HCM. The only way to diagnose it for sure is via echocardiogram. That equipment is portable, and there may be a cardiologist who can come to your vet's clinic and do the procedure there. It might set your mind at ease, or, if by some chance she does have early HCM, you will know and can begin treatment.
Is there any possibility of some type of intestinal blockage due to eating the flies? The exoskeletons of insects would not be digested, and could accumulate. Since Sophers is known to have a touchy digestive system, that could be part of the problem. Often when there is a blockage, liquid stool will be passed around it.
Hugs and continued prayers for Sophers.

Catbird, I kind of dont think so, her poos were all normal until the steroid injection and Pred has given her diahrrea in the past. She did have a normal poo yesterday so Im guessing there isnt a blockage, a bit more diahrrea this morning but the vet said that will happen until the steroid shot has a chance to wear off more. I did ask him about blockage and he said her symptoms werent indicative of that. We are done with week one of it, so only 3 to 5 more weeks....geesh. The head vet at the other clinic said we might want to do a lab profile and have it sent to an outside lab as their equipment would be more sensitive just to see what her white cell and globulin counts are doing. She is still coming up with ideas.

Your best bet is an echocardiogram. Cassie has early stages cardiomyopathy, as does Jess. But his is progressing to the point where he needs daily meds now to slow down the disease (hopefully). The cardiologist thinks the triplets (at 5 years old) are part MC, too.
I lost CJ's sister to HCM at age 7. We didn't know she had any heart disease and she threw a blood clot one morning. I had to let her go. So, it's possible for it not to show up on routine exams, but sometimes it does, too (like Cassie and Jess).
Overall, I'd really suggest an echocardiogram if at all possible, even as a "rule out". I don't know if knowing would have made a difference in Dexie's case, but I do know that it was a devastating experience to lose her that way.
Keep us posted. Sending all kinds of healing thoughts for Sophers and prayers for strength for you.

Sandi, I'm glad there has been "some" improvements with Sophers. Hopefully, between the vets you are able to come up with an answer and get Sophers feeling good. I know how hard it is being located where the vet clinics have limited resources. I usually have to drive an hour and a half away for anything out of the normal medical needs. Is there any larger cities close enough by that might have more resources? I know it is frustrating, but where I'm at, once I'm able to get the diagnosis, my local vet receives all the records from the Specialy Clinic and is able to provide the supportive care locally. They just need a facility that has the equipment to confirm diagnosis. I don't know if this would be possible in your case if it proved to be something like HCM.
Keeping the prayers headed your way.

Sandi now that you mention the lil flies... I had a big problem and traced it back to one or both plants I had bought from the grocery store. The plants originated in florida so do now know if that had anything to do with it but my dog does not eat them as they are so small it would be hard for her to even see them. More a nuisance than anything else. Hopefully the flies you had are small like what I've been slowly getting rid of. Threw out the two plants and flies seem to be less than before.
Hopefully Sophers will continue to improve as more of the steroid works it way out of the body. That still just steams me so much that I double the good thoughts for you lil baby all the time.
