Oscar

« on: July 08, 2010, 05:23:43 PM »

My diabetic Oscar has been having yet another UTI - he has had blood in his frequent pees off and on for several days. He went to the vet tonight for a urine test, won't know anything until tomorrow.
We all think a lot ot this is related to the sugar - this cat's BG is very unpredictable, even if we keep his food the same. He is in his mid teens and a survivor of the bad pet food.
I started him on the Tinkle Tonic right away, this seems to be soothing. He is also constipated (of course, why not), so he gets to have the hairball remedy which he hates the taste of. Tongue
Please send some good thoughts for my little "ruckus cat" ....

Many positive thoughts and prayers coming for Oscar ! Can he eat pumpkin ? That and fish oil usually help keep mine going. Have you looked at Trixsyn ? Peg has had very good luck with it and it also lubricates the UT.

Forgot to say, I recently saw an article about a supplement which helps keep bg stable. I'll try to find it for you.

Oscar does not like pumpkin - I put a little bit of psyllium and water in the wet food, and now since shedding/hairball season, I have had to give him the hairball stuff in the tube too.
Haven't tried the Trixyn yet - probably will in the near future. I have fish oil, maybe he will like it...
He doesn't look ill at all....and outside of the frequent scary trips to the box, he doesn't act ill either. Bizarre.
Thank you all.

Oscar, Oscar, Oscar............my poor guy.
We are sending prayers and positive energy for this to resolve very quickly.   Kiss    Kiss

Oscar, Duke says to listen to your meowmie and be cooperative.
She only wants to help you because she loves you so.

Meowlie, I have a bottle of Trixsyn.
I can send it out tomorrow if you want me to.
It really helps to strengthen the bladder and thicken the bladder wall, making kitty less subject to bacterial UTI's.

Meowlie, if his urine comes back positive for bacteria, ask your vet about using D-Mannose powder in his food.  Even though the "ose" usually indicates a sugar, the D-Mannose does not interfere with blood sugar.  It makes the inside of the bladder slippery, so bacteria, especially e-coli which has little barbs, can not adhere to the bladder.

I need to find the D-Mannose link.

Meowli, hoping you can get Oscar and that darn UTI under control again. Im sure it must be very frustrating to keep having that problem.  Please let us know what the vet says.  I dont know what Oscar is eating but we started Sophers on Serengeti dry food and it said "promotes low urinary PH"...on the bag....dont know if thats connected to Oscar's problem or not though.... Undecided      Sending lots of hugs to you and Oscar.

ETA: never mind my mention of Serengeti, I see that Oscar boy is diabetic and I have no idea what types of food they can or cant eat. I know you know more about any of that than I do!

Oh, Meowli, I'm sorry to hear that Oscar is having another UTI.  And for him to be acting completely normal and fine - good that you found the clues in the box and were able to take him into the vet quickly.  I'll keep my fingers for some good news from the results.  Big hugs to you both.
