I'm in regular contact with Lorri and she is a real trooper. She ended up losing 8, but now has a new mom and 4 babies. The threat of FIP is always with her, so she was very nervous when she had them spayed and neutered, but so far so good. (The mom and babies are from two of the rescue kittens . . . she thought she had time but obviously didn't)  I think FIP is just a fact of life with her now ~ hoping and praying that no others come down with it, but knowing that they could at any time.
Thanks for asking.

catmom5 -
Please pass along my condolences to Lorri on the loss of so many kitties.  I am so sad to hear this.  Cry  She is a very special person to keep hanging in there with her rescue work despite the hardships and heartbreak of losing so many to that horrible disease.  I will pray for her to keep her strength and resolve while facing the unknown with these kitties.  God bless her!

I found this among my notes:  it is a "template" on what suspected FIP would look like in a blood test (my source was a vet in Manila):

1.  High protein
2.  High Globulin
3.  Low Albumin to Globulin Ratio (A/G less than 0.6)
4.  Low lymphocytes
5.  High neutrophils
6.  High Leukocytes (WBC)

If all these are present there is high likelyhood of FIP

I wonder how much this differs from a profile for the corona virus, which can be present and the reason it is so difficult to diagnose with certainty that it is FIP.

You're right.  I assume that there will be clinical signs to go with the blood results.  Also, there is a titter or something for the corona virus - so if kitty tests positive for coronal virus, plus symptoms of FIP, and blood profile... then high chance it is FIP.  Wet FIP is easier to diagnose than the dry one, which in most cases, only a biopsy or necropsy will confirm.  The tests are just to show the high likelihood that whatever is ailing kitty is FIP.  Of course, as with any diagnostic procedure, what is ruled out is just as important as the diagnosis itself.

My understanding from Lorri and from research when CJ was so sick the second time (FIP was a possibility) is that it's a mutation of the corona virus that causes the FIP. Some cats can be exposed to and carriers of the corona virus without ever developing FIP. It's a devastating disease. I know that Lorri had the fluid drawn from the kitten's belly but can't remember if it was before or after the wee one died. if you're interested I can email her and ask her to share what she's learned. She did a lot of research when all the babies were getting sick.

It would be interesting to be able to learn from this sad experience of hers, so if she is willing, her insight may help others in the future avoid bringing this disease home to other kitties not afected yet.

Yes, it is a mutation of the carona virus. Wet FIP is easier to find. Dry is harder.
Fluid drawn from the belly will look straw colored and thick.
BUN is very important. All bloos tests are important, of course.
