My RB Angels Elvis, 1991-2010, and Twit, 2001-2010

« on: April 17, 2010, 04:30:25 AM »

Elvis still has loose stools for 2 months now.  We've tried Flagyl in the past, Proviable (probiotics), slippery elm, digestive enzymes, to no avail.  Took him for his recheck yesterday, and vet is now feeling nodules in addition to thickening of his intestines.  He was put on a course of prednisolone in addition to the Flagyl he started this week.  The last course of prednisolone he had when this started did lessen the thickening in his intestines.  He's still eating okay and has not vomited (hope I don't jinx that).  Vet thinks he has lymphoma, but that cannot be confirmed without a biopsy, and he is not a candidate for any surgery due to his age and frailness.  I'm actually hoping it is IBD and the vet is wrong.  Please keep us in your prayers if possible.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

I'm sorry that Elvis is not doing well, JM. It's so hard when those special seniors start to fail. I hope that the Presnisolone can take care of the immediate problems and that Elvis is feeling much better. Having all 4 seniors at my house now, it's always in the back of my mind.

Good news about Smokey, though.

Hugs

Sorry to hear JM I hope the vet is wrong also.  But lymphoma is always the thing vet seem to go for I know it may be common in cats but still.  I have gotten that dx twice and it was wrong both times.

Keeping you both in my thoughts.

Hugs to you and  Kiss Kiss to Elvis

I hope the vet is wrong and its just IBD and age. Did he eat the chicken and rice ? If anything will help the diarrhea the white rice will. Let me know if you want to ask the vet about the Ugard and I can email you the ingredient list. Its the only thing that helps my Trooper and neighbors Chase. I never asked about it for the cats though. Its a mylanta type powder for horses, its pink though & has a slight flavor. The dogs will eat it just sprinkled on their food but a cat might be more finicky about it.When Corey had cancer it was the only thing that helped before she became constipated from the tumor. If the vet okays it and figures the correct dosage for Elvis, I can mail you some. I still have 1/3 of a huge bucket. Prayers and positive thoughts coming for Elvis and the whole family. Mine are all seniors too and it makes everything seem worse healthwise.

Special senior-to-senior prayers from kitty IQ who heard exactly the same diagnoses in September 2007
from both our hearts to Elvis and JM.

I will keep Elvis in my thoughts and prayers.  It's difficult to be faced with anything like this with the senior kitties when they are not candidates for many procedures.  I hope it's just IBD.  A few meals of chicken & rice really does the trick to bind Tig up when she has diarrhea.

JM, Elvis and you are in my heart and prayers.  Diarrhea can be a tricky thing to get under control, maybe its some sort of food allergy?  There are the usual culprits to try to eliminate from their diet including fish and it can be hard finding food that doesnt contain such things as fish.  Our KiKi didnt tolerate rice well either so finally when we got her diarrhea to stop, it was by feeding boiled chicken mixed with a tiny bit of canned organic yam or sweet potato mixed in with her food.  She actually loved it and her diarrhea stopped very quickly.  You and Elvis have been through so much! Please let us know how he continues to do.  Is he losing weight from the diarrhea?

JustMe, I'm so sad to come find this thread.  I can only imagine how you must feel so frustrated, worried and lost, and what with Elvis being of an age where getting a biopsy is not a good idea, you must be at your wit's end trying to figure out a new or next plan.

I will be sending many good thoughts and wishes your ways in hopes you'll find it's just a food allergy and all he needed was a change of diet.  Many warm hugs to you.

JustMe I too hope that it is something that is manageable and just one of those things that comes with old age. The choices are a lot more difficult when the options start to run out due to age or ill health.

JM, everyone who palpated my Rufus' intestines and felt lumps/nodules was convinced he had lymphoma.
His mesenteric lymph nodes were enlarged from the day I got him to the day he died......NOT from lymphoma.  The diagnosis from his biopsy........ idiopathic mesenteric lymphadenopathy.

My prayers continue for dear Elvis and you his worried meowmie.   Kiss

Oh, my heart is sinking from hearing of Elivs' lastest diagnosis.  I, too, hope the vet is wrong, and it's just IBD.  But the pred is a good choice in either case and can really help cats with both illnesses.  I'll keep up the positive prayers that the little guy comes through this OK.
