Hmmm...I've never been optimistic about doing any kind of toothbrushing/cleaning with Phantom awake (she goes completely crazy when I try to trim her claws and I have to have the vet do it), but maybe in view of your experience I will have to re-evaluate my thinking.  Maybe I should try, if it's just tartar and not a need for other dental work.

Sometimes vets will put 'em on Clavamox prior to having a dental done, and sometimes afterwards, too.

Our Anthony had his teeth cleaned a few months ago, and the vet didn't think he needed Clavamox.

After the procedure, he was fine the first day, and then came down with something similar to a URI, but not quite.  He was coughing and gagging.  It was scary for a few days.  He was able to eat and drink, so the vet didn't give him anything.

The vet thought his throat was irritated from the anesthesia.

While the Clavamox wouldn't have prevented a throat irritation, our other kitties who were given Clavamox prior to their dental proceedures had no problems afterwards.

Offy, sorry I missed this thread earlier.  Glad Scooter is OK, now.

Scooter was on penicillin for 3 days before and on it from the day after until they gave her the 3-day shot last Wed. Didn't help her not get whatever she had Sad  The all over inflammation & heat (not a temp) with the sneezing(almost 11 days of not feeling good at all).. just don't know. When there aren't real answers, I'm skittish going forward now until I can really take time with the vet about dentals.

Scooter is letting me use the Pet Dental swabs now. She buried the whole container in the litter box months ago after I tried using them .. unsuccessful attempt to use them.. then she started chewing my swabs . steals them from my vanity and leaves QTips with soggy tips around (intact thank goodness).

Maybe now she figures me using the swabs will be heck of alot better than the carrier from hell. I hope so, cos i've got 2 different things on the way to use with my swabs on Her Highness.

A cat sneezing is a good omen for everyone who hears it. - Italian superstition - AND it's bad news if that sneeze juice lands in your eye - Miss Kitty emphatically adding facts.

LOL.  Maybe the cat has to be Italian?

I just remembered something.  Spring of 2007 when Elvis had his dental (17 at the time?), he had 4 extractions of his canines.  They had to be broken out (resorptive).  He ended up with a severe ear infection afterwards.  I don't remember if I posted about that way back when.  I mean it was sooo severe  that his equilibrium was off and it was thought he had a neurological problem, he kept falling to one side, and we were preparing for the worst.  It was a result of the dental procedure.  You never know what to expect, however, he needed to get those teeth out as his gums were very, very, very bad, before the bacteria spread through his body.  Think vertigo.  All cleared up after several courses of post-op antibiotics for his ear problems.

P.S.  Sorry, I was interrupted.   Embarrassed  My point is that it's all connected.  Dental work can result in other temporary problems.

Poor Elvis! Vertigo is bad, makes you nauseous too.

I agree, and I think the discussions about the gels & toothpastes & stuff along with the lessons in the aftermath mean I'm going to be using the products on all of them. Even if it means buying the sack to put them in & hold them steady (some ad I saw).

The lady's cat with issues due to the bone splinter - the splinter embedded in the tissue, a tumor formed there, eventually fatal. So you know my piggy bank has Xray fund envelope now Sad

The horror stories from the bacterial damage are just as bad I think.

Incentive to train kittens/cats to allow teeth to be brushed. (Snork!! Train a CAT?)

memo to self: go to welding store & get industrial strength gloves, face protector, heavyduty apron,, maybe western store for chaps ...
