I am very blessed this Christmas to have two out of three cats affected by the pet food recall of 2007, Smorgi and IQ. I've just come back from the vet's and have something of a miracle to share on Itchmo.
In January 2007, all three of my cats were diagnosed with what I believe is pet food related renal failure. Doozie, my wonderful little clown and mischief maker, was euthanized on February 10, 2007.
Smorgi and IQ were diagnosed in January with chronic renal failure.
This past September, IQ was in pretty bad shape with chronic renal failure and then diabetes mellitus that she got after receiving a dose of Prednisalone to treat chronic diarrhea. That was the point at which I changed vets and changed diets from all Science Diet products and Iams products to a combination of Wellness and then Strombeck home-cooked. Her fur was falling out in chunks after months of being on SD KD, her coat was matted and greasy, her IBD flared up all the time causing her to vomit frequently (making it harder to keep her hydrated on home-administered subcutaneous fluids). She now had high blood pressure and was placed on Norvasc. And the poor little lady had chronic diarrhea that nothing would stop. Things were looking pretty grim.
I could not make my then-vet change her mind about vet school diets. So I changed vets to be closer to the emergency services I thought I would need. IQ was put on PZI Vet insulin. And within days of getting her off SD KD prescription, the diarrhea stopped on its own and I was able to take her off Flagyl that was being used to prevent diarrhea by my new vet.
Thursday, IQ almost had a blood sugar crash after her usual dose of insulin. She had put on about 7 ounces of weight despite her illnesses and the vet was amazed. She was pulled off insulin until this morning, Saturday, December 22, 2007. The miracle is her blood work is good, just slightly elevated creatinine and almost normal phosphorous. And the biggest miracle of all is her diabetes is over; her blood glucose is completely normal.
Thank you, Itchmo, for months of hard work and suggestions, many of which I adopted. I truly have a Christmas 2007 Miracle, my beautiful IQ. So consider consulting your vets about non-commercial pet food diets, and you may have Miracles, too.

Thanks to all who have worked so hard on the Itchmo forums to make things better for our fur-kids, too numerous and too right to name. Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, All, and thank you for helping with the celebration at my house in 2007.

Oh this is wonderful news!! I hope IQ's diabetes stays in 'remission' & her kidney numbers stay in the good zone. How is Smorgi doing?
My diabetic & CRF cats seem to be doing very well & treatment free (knock on wood) on their canned diets.

Sorry, folks. I won't know for sure about Smorgi until her blood tests in January. But her weight is stabile, eating, pooing, and seems to be taking a licking from chronic renal failure and just keeps on ticking.
IQ wouln't have gone in for testing if I hadn't observed her staring pointlessly at a pile of boxes and seeming to be disoriented. The vet said it was a good call because her blood sugar was down below 20 when she arrived and she would have shortly had a seizure. So we lucked out before that happened.
Petslave, just note any cans you're using on your kids because it pays to have some backup for emergencies or times when you need it. I'm sure not wise enough to know the only route to go for every fur-kid, and only hope all our thoughts and suggestions will assist someone else reading these threads. I can only relate what worked for me, and appreciate everyone's thoughts on what has helped them. We all learned a lot about pet food this year of 2007. And you all have certainly helped me. Otherwise, I don't think I'd have my two.

I too have tears of joy in my eyes for the amazing, miraculous IQ and for you too, 3cat. What wonderful holiday news! I have heard of diabetic cats going into remission after diet changes, and I am glad IQ turned out to be one of them. Super news about her kidney function, too!
Fingers crossed for Smorgi...

Thanks for sharing the good news with us. What a blessing that IQ is better. Here's hoping Smorgi's results will also show improvement and you can celebrate a double Christmas miracle.

Wow. What an amazing miracle! So glad for IQ's good news, and I hope some of that rubs off on Smorgi too. I know you'll all have a wonderful Christmas together, and Doozie will be with you in spirit.
