I am sorry I have been out of the loop for a while. I wanted to let all of you know that GG had her one month check-up today. All of her enzyme levels have returned to normal. Hurrah!! Better yet, when I had my Wally boy in for a vet visit I heard the vet telling a client that she is no longer renewing metacam prescriptions for cats. My vet also graciously agreeded not to charge me for GG's treatment for renal failure. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and information. If you had not let me know about metacam, who knows what might have happened. Now maybe someone out there will have an idea of what is wrong with my Wally. He is a 2 yr old orange neutered male cat, indoor only. He has developed a terrible wheeze and violent bouts of sneezing. His temp, blood work, chest x-ray are all normal. Antibiotics and predinisone treatments have not been successful. An x-ray of his nasal passages shows cloudyness on both sides. The vet does not believe it is a growth of any kind. The vet now has him on a super antibiotic. I have not noticed any improvement yet, but we still have a week to go. In the mean time I am trying to eliminate any corn from my cat food since having learned that many cats have allergies to corn. I am anxious to hear if any of you out there have any ideas of what else I might try, since you have been such a great help in the past. I hope you know how greatful I am to all of you.

I don't know anything about the condition but I'm sending prayers and purrs and headbutts for Wally's recovery. Allergy does sound like a possibility.

Jiver, if he's allergic to corn he may be allergic to all grains so you might want to try eliminating them all (use grainless food like Wellness, Instinct, etc.). Also consider anything new in his house (yes it's his, not yours) that you may have brought in such as cleaning solutions, new carpeting, new cat bed, etc. Alot of times allergies are environmental.

I am happy to hear that GG is well and that your vet did not charge you for the treatment! And also that the vet is not renewing Metacam prescriptions.
Sorry to hear about Wally. A viral respiratory infection is a possibility, which should go away on its own within about 2 weeks. But, as others have said, allergies seem to be the most likely possibility. Have you recently steam-cleaned or shampooed carpets? That can release allergens. Is anyone in the house a smoker? If so, you might try having them smoke outside for awhile to see if that makes a difference. Any chance that there is mold or mildew anywhere? New scented products like perfume, after-shave being used by anyone? Plug-in air fresheners?
Sending hopes for Wally's rapid recovery.

Great news on GG's recovery! If Wally's respiratory problems are caused by an infection, the antibiotics should help. If not, I'd start looking at allergies.

Excellent news about GG, jiver! And that's great that the vet researched this & is taking it seriously. It's scary to think vets are just unaware of these problem with metacm. They frequently chastize us pet owners about researching our pets' problems on the internet, but how can we trust them to make the right choices when these things happen on a regular basis? I hope you get Wally's nasal problem figured out. Sounds like it's just in his nose & not down in his lungs from your description. If you haven't researched it yet, get on Google & type in nose problems in cats to get as much background info as you can. That might help you watch for specific symptoms & let you better figure out what's going on. I always read as many websites as possible since each one has a certain slant & I may not agree with various forms of treatment or opinions. Here's a web site that has a little info about possible causes for nasal congestion: http://www.petcaretips.net/feline_respiratory_problems.html

Great news about GG. Hope you figure out Wally's problem. Don't forget seasonal allergies haven't really gone away this year with all the weird weather we've had.

jiver, good news on GG. Cats spend more time indoors in fall and winter and lots of molds grow in a heated house. So allergies are a possibility. Have you changed furnace filters lately, the type as well as the frequency? Have one cat who displays more allergies in cold weather than any other time. Just a thought.

Thanks for all of your suggestions about Wally's condition. I am thinking it is allergies too. I have been very careful about enviromental factors because I had a Siamese baby that suffered from horrible breathing problems. I would never allow smoking in my house and only have wood fires if our power is out and we need the heat. I cannot think of anything new in the way of cleaning materials, etc, but will keep it in my mind. I have my furnace system completely cleaned every year. I am leaning toward food allergies, since the antibiotics don't seem to be making a big improvement. One day I think he is getting much better and then he has a really bad day. I will certainly give a total grain free diet a try. Thanks for all of your imput.
