Don't give up! My older catgirl went into acute renal failure a year ago and spent nearly two weeks at the MSU Vet Clinic hospital. There were days when I didn't think she'd ever come home, but she's still with me and doing very well. You did the right thing by getting GG right in for treatment, the best decision you could have made. Please keep us posted on how she's doing. catmom5

Happy News!! GG was able to come home tonight. Her enzyme levels are almost normal. Other then a fever she is doing well. We are pretty sure the fever is a flare up of her dental problems which she was being treated for with the metacam. It is not unlikely that the stress of her illness would allow the inflammation in her gums to advance.
Other good news is that I was able to get her to eat. They had to " force feed" (their term) at the vets. She turned her nose up at the special kidney diet, but did eat some of her Tiki Cat canned food.
The young lady vet that was treating GG for her problem has been convinced that metacam was the problem. Next week I meet with the vet that prescribed the medication. Hopefully he will be as open to reading up on metacam as his partner.
The vet says GG is not out of the woods yet. Only time will tell if this is acute or chronic renal failure, but at least things are under control for now. I am sure all of the prayers and positive thoughts had as much to do with her recovery as veterinary medicine. I am so very grateful.
I am so glad that this forum has helped get the word out about the dangers of metacam. Apparently many of you were already aware of this problem, but for those of you, like me, who were unaware, please think twice about letting your vet prescribe oral metacam!!

That's great news jiver! GG is young, so it's possible her kidneys will recover from this. And I'm betting her appetite will improve now that she's home - especially once her gums clear up. Still sending good thoughts.

Like everyone else, I am so glad tha GG is well enough to be taken home. We will keep on praying for her continued healing. Stomatitis is a rather difficult problem to manage, from what I hear. Perhaps GG could benefit from a holistic vet - these vets really major in strengthening the immune system and treat the entire individual rather than just the symptoms of disease. Please keep us posted as to GG's progess.

Big sigh of relief! She's home & she's eating! Are you having to give her subcutaneous fluids at this time, or are you taking her in the vet to get those, if needed? I hope you can get around having to do that, but if you end up having to do home fluid therapy there's lots of good resources on the internet. That's great you're getting people at the vets office 'educated' on metacam!

So happy that GG is home and eating! What a relief. Continued good wishes for no long-term damage. And thank you for having the courage to educate others at the vet clinic.

jiver - I hope GG is still at home & hanging in there. This is probably the best website on cat renal failure. It's got tons of info & can be a little overwhelmng at first, but if you read it a little at a time it will give you lots of good background info: http://www.felinecrf.org/Helen's yahoo crf site is also a great resource & support group. I think there's a link on the site listed above.
