jiver, I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. Sending prayers your way. I would question the use of Metacam, too, in addition to food sources. Cats have a harder time metabolizing these than dogs, even though Metacam is approved for both.
I will not give the oral version to my cats. I only allow the vet to give one injection if my cat undergoes surgery. My vets insist that they have never had any problems with it. You are right, JustMe, I have edited my post to show that only the injection is approved for cats, which I did not make clear originally. Oral use is off-label. My cat vet does not use the oral at all, and will only give one injection, post-op when the cat is also getting IV or subQ fluids, as far as I am aware.
I really hope this kitty will be all right.

Thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts and good advice. I am certainly going to check further into the Metacam possibility. I had already spoken to my vet about it possibly being a problem. My kitty is no longer receiving the medication. She is at the vets receiving aggressive treatment for the renal failure. Since she is only 2 years old, I hope her age will work in her favor.

Thanks for all of the great input. I have been reading up on metacam and it sure sounds like the cause of my kitty's problems. She was receiving oral doses of metacam that were much higher then they should have been. The solution the vet gave me was 1.5mg/ml and the directions were to give her the 10lb amount on the syringe. When I asked my vet about this, I was told that it might have added to the problem, but not caused the problem. After my reading I beg to differ with the vet. It does not help my poor little girl to assign blame, but it is a relief to know it is not something in my house that could poison my other 3 guys.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help and good wishes. I should know tomorrow how thing are looking for my baby's survival.

Maybe if you printed out the info on metacam for your vet to read, it may save the lives of many kitties in the future. You would not have to 'blame' him for anything, just tell him that you found this 'information interesting' and ask him to read it.
