I have a 2yr old spayed dsh cat who has suddenly gone into renal failure.  The vet said it looks like antifreeze poisoning.  She is an indoor only cat and has never been exposed ot antifreeze.  I am frantically looking around my house for possible causes of her problem.  I also have 3 neutered male cats and do not want them to have the same problem.  Does anyone have suggestions?

What food has she been fed? Brand? Wet or dry? Do you still have the orig packaging? Were the other cats fed exactly the same?

All of these questions will help in IDing the problem.

Do you have any houseplants?  Cleaning or other chemicals she could have gotten into, or that you may wash surfaces with?  Medicines?

oops I hit the send button too soon--how is your cat doing now?  Is she home & stable or still at the vets?

While you are looking for the source of the problem, is your vet giving her aggressive treatment with fluid therapy, etc?  Remind him of the pet food recall that resulted in acute renal failure given the fact that your cat is an indoor only cat.  Good luck.  I hope your kitty recovers quickly.  If you can give more information, perhaps those on this forum who have had kitties develop this problem can be of help to you.

here is a list from one website:
"Kidney failure can also be caused by ingestion of toxic substances, such as many kinds of commercial foods laced with preservatives and cooked ingredients, antifreeze, some anti-inflammatory drugs, certain types of antibiotics. In addition, some types of infections may cause kidney function to decline."

there are a lot of online support groups & websites that are very helpful in deciphering all the medical stuff, treatments, & what various symptoms mean when they show up.  My 7 year old cat was diagnosed with CRF earlier this year & I found these to be very helpful in understanding more about the disease.  Was your cat diagnosed with chronic or acute renal failure?

Could your kitty have gotten into any human medicines? Household cleaning stuff?  Even toothpaste, especially anything with glycols in it?  As Mary has asked, what about the food that kitty has eaten?  A cat does not suddenly go into renal failure unless something bad was ingested... well, that's what I know anyway.  I take it that the kitty is being treated by your vet now?  How is the prognosis?  I do hope kitty will be OK.  And you are quite right in trying to get to the bottom of this terrible incident so that it does not happen to your other kitties.  PLease keep us posted.

My cat was diagnosed this morning and is at the vets receiving treatment.  I am hoping for the best.

I have no new houseplants, and none of my existing houseplants are on the toxic plant list.  Because of a recent hip replacement surgery, I have been using a cleaning lady and will check with her tomorrow about any chemicals she may be using around the house.  I think this is an unlikely cause since she has been cleaning my mother's house for years and her cats have had no problems, but it doesn't hurt to check.

My kitty is currently on metacam.  She had severe stomatitis and had to have most of her teeth removed last year.  During her dental checkup on nov 30th she showed some inflammation of the gums and was being treated for that.

I am not aware of any new pet food recalls.  My cats currently are fed Weruva, Tiki Cat, Avoderm, Pet Gold Elite and Sheba canned food and Natural Choice, Pinnacle, Royal Canin and Chicken Soup dry food.  It is getting so hard to know what is safe for my kitties any more.

Jivers, how old is your kitty?  And how long has it been on the Metacam.  I have read in various places some problems with cats and Metacam causing kidney damage.  Apparently cats can have more problems with it than dogs.  Im not a vet so I dont know but Im wondering if your kitty is sick from the Metacam?  If they are still giving it to your kitty, I would ask them to stop immediately.  I hope your kitty gets better real fast, best wishes, Sandi K

I think everyone has covered possible causes and I don't have anything to add to that, but I want to send purrs and prayers and warmest wishes for your cat's recovery.

jiver, It would be helpful if your vet has put aside some blood and urine for further testing (like apap level or melamine et al)-hopefully your vet is keeping an open mind and is ruling out the obvious---I know antifreeze can be ruled out by a urinalysis ---good luck and please keep us posted.  If this happened to my cats again I would make sure of aggressive IV therapy while the workup is going on---I think that is important!

edited to say---Welcome to Itchmo---I wish it were on different circumstances for you though!

Welcome, jiver.  Sending warm thoughts and purrs to your kitty.  I hope your kitty recovers soon!

Side effects (rare) listed for Metacam include kidney and liver toxicity.  It is a NSAID like acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.  Cats have a harder time metabolizing these than dogs, even though Metacam is approved for both  edited--as an injection.
