My cats Phosphorus level is low.  The vet isn't sure why. I feed him blue buff which has a very low phosphorus level (lower then KD.  He was on Kristalose which is a compound of laculose.  We stopped it because his calcium level was too high and I'd read that laculose can cause high calcium.  His calcium dropped from 11.4 to 8.6 range 8.3 - 10.8 after switching him to Mirilax.

I was concerned about high calcium and now I'm wondering about it being low like this in the range and now the low phosphorus level which I read goes hand in hand with calcium.  He is early CRF also.  Could a too low phosphorus level food along with an out of whack calcium level induced by laculose do this or does anyone know about calcium and phosphorus?

I'm going to do a little checking for you 8398. I'll get back to this thread a little later today. Hang on.

Tanya's CRF website has a lot of good info about calcium/phosphorous balances and imbalances.  There might be something there on what you need to know.   I've never found a search box on the site, so you will have to do some looking through the links.

I haven't forgotten about this, 8398, I just got caught up in some rescue stuff yesterday. Am looking for some answers for you now.

ETA: Hard to find such cases on the Internet but found this:

Low phosphorus can be caused by:

malnourishment

intestinal disease, diarrhea, vomiting

Vit. D deficiency

complications with diabetes

An overactive parathyroid gland

Some medications, like prednisone

-------------------------------------

Will continue to research.
