A couple of days ago, my brother and sister-in-law's elderly beagle "got behind and tumbled by" the family car and ended up with a dislocated hip. They took him to emergency vet ..as SIL says " They gave him pain meds, highly sedated him & did a 'reinduction' to put the ball & socket back together.  He will be in a sling for about 2 weeks.  With a lot of prayers, the procedure will work, otherwise he will need surgery. They plan to discharge him this afternoon.  Thankfully there were no internal injuries or fractures, but he doesn't understand - and frankly neither do we. Some would say 'he is only a dog', but to us he is a family member. "
Bailey is home now, in the sling, poor baby, and I know he could use some of the wonderful Itchmo
prayers and good wishes. Thank you. He is such a sweet dog.

Awwww, sending prayers and best wishes that Bailey recuperates quickly and has no need of further intervention. All pets are family here, too.

Poor Bailey. Accidents do happen but when they happen to our furkids it is sometimes hard to handle. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for Bailey.

Saying a prayer that this works and no surgery will be needed. In  your post you said "but he doesn't understand" please clarify who 'he' is or who you are referring to - couldn't quite get that part of it? The emergency vet or ?

Poor Bailey ! Many prayers and positive thoughts for healing with no surgery. He must be so confused with the sling and they must be feeing so guilty about not seeing him there. Sometimes things just happen,no matter how careful we are.

Thank you all for your prayers and good wishes. I will convey them to the family.
JJ, I took SIL's "he doesn't understand" to mean the dog is confused about all this. He must feel weird all wrapped up in that sling. I will ask, though, if there is any other meaning like the vet being amazed that there were miraculously no other injuries.
I have never heard about this particular procedure with animals - nice to find drs willing to try non-invasive first. Surgery besides expensive, would be a more of a risk in an older dog.

Oh bless the little guy.  Hope he feels much better very soon.  (Beagles are among my favorites -- just don't tell my cats that!)
