As some of you know, I was taking care of a beautiful black feral cat, Tommy, who was hit by a car this summer. I never found the body although I searched and posted flyers and had lots of people looking for him. Well, a couple of weeks ago, I saw a black cat late at night wandering through the yard. It's almost impossible to see a black cat in the middle of the night, so I didn't know who it was. Well, tonight he was hiding by the bird feeders and when I walked toward him (but not at him and not looking at him) he ran off, but not in a panic. I decided to put out a can of food in the usual spot and when I went out a bit later, the dish had been licked clean. This is in a secluded spot next to my garage, but where I fed Tommy (and Lucy) and at the same time he would come for dinner. So, I'm very excited to think that maybe he did survive the hit and now that the weather is turning colder, he's back to be taken care of.

I don't know how likely this is, but this cat is the right size and shape and has a "fat" tail (but not fluffy, just thick) like Tommy. Just hoping that my boy survived and is home again.

Oh, catmom5, this is very hopeful news!  Maybe Tommy's injury was minor, and he just stayed away out of fear until now!  There can't be many black cats in one area with that same tail shape.  I really hope it's him!

Oh I do hope this is Tommy! This cat sounds so similar, surely he has indeed come back.

I probably will never know for sure, but I believe with my heart that Tommy has come home. I haven't seen him again, but he comes every night (at his usual time) and is eating very well. I plan to get some wormer for him, something I have done before.

He is eating about 3/4 cup of kitten kibble mixed with a 5.5 oz can of wet food mixed with a can of warm water. He has been eating it all. Do you think that's enough food for him?

I am just so happy that he felt safe enough to come home. Now I hope he will learn to be comfortable enough to show himself to me again.

Excellent!  Hooray for Tommy!

It's probably enough food for now - once it gets colder, you may want to up it a bit.  Raccoons are still an issue until the really cold weather hits, too and you don't want leftovers hanging around.

I'm so glad that he is eating his regular meals.

Maybe you could borrow a motion camera from someone who has one and set it up at the feeding shelter so that you could be sure it is Tommy.

I hope it is Tommy!  What are the odds of another black cat knowing the exact time and place to show up for eats? I think kitten kibble is pretty high calorie stuff, if that helps.
