Thanks for the kind words about my fur babe and tips for doing fluids. I'll let the fluids run through each time and change the line after every two bags. Kitty is doing well and is eating like a little piggy. Oink! Oink! Purrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Thanks, purringfur, for posting. I've been told change lines every bag, which in my case lasts a week or less. Take old needle off immediately, bleed line, and cap with sanitized blue cap between uses. Install new needle next session and bleed line again, even though bag hangs from towel bar and is not moved between uses. That's just my vet's instructions. I sure appreciate hearing about this. Thank you!

Wow. Thanks, 3cat. I guess we all get different instructions. I wonder why mine says to change the lines only after every 4th bag instead of more frequently? She knows I'll spend about anything for our pets. Till now, changing after every 4th bag has not been a problem. I'm wondering if the tick that latched on to the injection area gave off some bacteria which could have caused the infection??

Mandycat, Your instructions worked well for removing larger bubbles. Also, I hung the fluids bag on a doorknob instead of flat like I was told to do. Much, much easier to withdraw fluids and no turbulence. Didn't even have to use lesliek's "knees-to-the-door" method. Thank you! It's amazing and confusing the different range of instructions we are getting from our vets.

Kitty cannot resume fluid therapy yet and received another bottle of Clavamox. Apparently, his infection is clearing some, but it's not responding to the degree the vet would like. She determined that the infection was still there by feeling the skin texture near the injection site. I was unable to take him to the vet myself to ask a lot of questions. I have to call her early next week, and I'll bring up the idea of taking blood to see if the tick could have inserted some bacteria...
The babe is doing quite well, looking majestic with his paws crossed, purring, and watching everything. He was chasing my "boot lace snakes" last night. He's eating a lot and doing a fair amount of drinking. I've also been mixing more water with his food, a practice I've followed for several years.

Purringfur, you can also put out coffee cups and or glasses full of water on coffee tables and in other kitty spots, just so water is available everywhere in the house. Plus, if you have syringes, especially the force feeding ones, you can develop water syringing game with your kitty, like syringe some water in, groom a little, or syringe in water, play with favorite toy, just to get extra fluids in there while you can't give sub-q's.

Thanks for the ideas, 3cat. My cat likes to drink water out of coffee cups. I think it makes him feel as if he's getting away with something. We always leave a cup in the sink with fresh water in it. I'll put cups in other places, too. Thanks.

Kitty can resume fluid therapy, but he still has to finish his second bottle of Clavamox. The vet determined he was about ready by palpating the area late last week. She said he didn't seem to be painful, but to give him a few more days and to wait till this week before starting again.

Yes, kitty is back on fluids and seems to be doing quite well. He's been playing kitty soccer with the dogs' tennis balls and then plopping down on top of them so they're totally hidden -- sooooooo cute. And then, he'll sit there looking so wise as if to say, "What ball? I haven't seen any ball. Not me!" I was afraid he wouldn't want to tolerate the fluid sessions after being off of them for a while, but he's doing well. We're heading out for vacation, so the vet tech coming in to do fluids has instructions to take him to the clinic if she notices anything. He also has a 24/7 house sitter (to entertain, read with, play with, ...wake up at 5 a.m.), so I feel good knowing he has people to observe him and interact with him. Thanks for asking.
