Glad to hear that the extra fluids have perked up Elvis' appetite. It's so hard sometimes, when kitties let you know clearly that they don't like something, but you know that it will make them feel better. And I hear you about those holiday weekends--for pets and humans, they always seem to bring on emergencies.

Boy do I know what you mean. I've been in and out of the vet for the past two weeks with my girl, Baby. I just know something is going to come up this weekend and she'll need to go back in for the one and only reason: it's a holiday weekend! NEVER seems to fail Murphy's law, I guess. Increasing his fluids to three times a week once you get him rehydrated seems like a good possibility. Maybe you can talk to your vet about that idea, especially if it will help eliminate anymore trips to the vet's office than necessary. I sure hope you can get a good balance soon. Can you mix more water in his wet food and still get him to eat? Maybe you can get more fluids in him that way. Just a thought. You are still in my prayers.

How is Elvis doing? No problems for him during the holiday weekend, I hope.

Weekend went okay. Elvis is giving us a difficult time administering his fluids though. They both have checkups this week.
Thanks for asking, Janet. {{{hugs}}}

JustMe, Sorry to hear that Elvis is giving you a rough time with fluids. Do you think that a little Rescue Remedy on his ear a little while before fluid time would mellow him out a bit? Good luck with the check-ups.

I don't know. Have never used Rescue Remedy and I don't have any. Something to look into in the future. Thanks.

When Tig was having all those stress related issues the Rescue Remedy in her ear did seem to help her relax.

JustMe- Its helped here with some of their issues also. Its in most health food, grocery & drug stores now as well as pet food stores. You can put it on their ears or in their water or both. In the water might help with the Bette Davis problems too.

This looks awful, but maybe you could try the clothes pin method? It supposedly doesn't hurt the cat. My vet said they actually ordered some clips made especially for the purpose, so guess there is some actual scientific basis to it. I was going to try it with Tessa when I need start giving her fluids again: http://www.felinecrf.org/giving_sub-qs_syringe.htm#clothes_peg_trick

ahh...the clothespin method. That is scary looking. yikes. I bet it does work though.
Elvis and Davey had their checkups today. Both had blood drawn. Not enough urine for urinalysis though. Will get results on Friday. He wasn't dehydrated on examination. We will see what blood work shows.
Elvis was a little dehydrated, so we are going back to having the vet techs do his fluids for a few weeks, 3 times a week, since DH and I are not getting enough fluids into him. He got 120 mL today, so hopefully he'll perk up a bit.
Both have tarter and some gum redness. Davey had his last dental a year ago, Elvis 2 years ago. Elvis is not a candidate for anesthesia, don't know about Davey yet though. Approximate ages: Elvis 18, Davey 17.

I wonder if you can use one of the Biotene products on their gums if they can't go through dental work? Some tarter can be chipped off without anesthesia too, but I doubt Elvis would take to that!

It is useful on some cats, and not on others. It's usefulness may be predicted by the reaction of the cat to "scruffing". Here is a picture from the article Justme - continued prayers for Elvis and Davey. Picture made unavailable by OP

I've read that a cat's reaction to this method of controlling them probably goes back to when the mother cat would pick up the kitten by the scruff of the neck and they automatically go limp and don't struggle.

OMG, it looks so awful and funny at the same time! But hey, if it works and doesn't hurt them, I'll try it if I ever need to.

The clothespins looks OK, but I don't know about these clips. I have some and tried one on myself and it seemed dangerously painful. Wonder if these are not the typical office supply kind, or they do something to them so they don't pinch the skin dangerously?
(Any kids seeing this photo - DO NOT TRY AT HOME. The 'cat lady on the Internet said the cat would like it' defense will not fly.)
That was my reaction also, poco. I also use them as clips for notebooks and such and they do have a very strong spring which clamps really hard. NOT a good idea for an animal.
