Elvis

« on: August 13, 2008, 12:12:28 PM »

Elvis and Davey went for their physicals today, blood work, and urinalysis.  Now, we have to wait for tomorrow for the results.

Both have lost about a pound since May.  Vet has prescribed home cooked chicken and low salt chicken broth added to their Wellness, plus appetite stimulant.

Vet palpated one kidney to be a little smaller than the other one (Elvis).   Sad

Davey needs another dental if blood work is acceptable.  He had a cleaning a little over a year ago.

So now, we wait for results.

P.S.  Neither cat was dehydrated.

I'm glad to hear they aren't dehydrated.  Hoping for good blood/urine work results.

I am curious--has their weight loss occurred mostly since the Wellness formula change?  (My cats are refusing Wellness more and more since the change.)  How much of their diet does Wellness constitute?

Are abdominal/kidney ultrasounds in the picture, based on the palpation of size difference?  I know that in humans one kidney is often a little smaller than the other, and this is not considered pathological.

No.  They've been losing weight over the last year or 2.  Same pattern my other cats had when they were early CRF and same pattern with my other senior cats in the past.  They eat, but still lose weight.  These 2 are definitely eating less though.  Normally, half their food is Wellness, the rest is Instinct.  Sometimes they get Wellness twice a day.  For these 2 cats, if they eventually don't finish their portion, I will give them a new small can of another flavor. I keep reoffereing it to them until they finish it up.

All my other cats are gaining weight even though they get less than the suggested amount of food.

I'm wishing Elvis and Davey a good report tomorrow.  Having tests is stressful for our kitties and ourselves.  I know Catbird mentioned ultrasound, however if I were to do it again, not sure I would have put my Maine Coon through it.  He is in the early stages of CRF, just slight elevation on counts.  However, the ultrasound left me depressed as one kidney was so small it was non-functional, the other was functioning but had a lot of past scar tissue.  It stressed him out so bad, that I am afraid each and every time he goes to the Vet now the stress will do him in.  Even having his blood pressure taken he was stressing out big time.  I suppose what I am trying to say if cats do well at the Vet, it may be wise to consider further testing, however if they tend to get stressed, not sure it is worth it.

Good Luck!

Glad you got the 3 boys in for check ups. Sorry that Elvis and Davey have lost weight, but hope it's not anything serious. Will keep you all in my prayers for good blood work!!

Poor BJ has had a time of it, hasn't he? At least he's in good health, with just a couple of "battle wounds". (Bette ~ be nice to your new brother)

Keep us posted, okay?

Thanks.  My vet did't say anything about x-rays/ultrasounds.  He's been going to the same vet for 18 years.  This is the first time he palpated a change in kidney size.  We're waiting for the lab work and take it from there.  Elvis does not do well at the vet.  He already tends to have elevated blood pressure and pulse rate.  His pulse is usually within normal at home.  He was very upset today, as he usually is.  Davey could care less if he is at the vet and just keeps purring up a storm.  Go figure.

The 2 times they took Elvis' blood pressure in the past, I'm surprised he didn't rip them all to shreds.  He was so upset.  It took 3 people to hold him.

4leggers,

Is your cat on any fluids or medication at this point?

When it comes to going to the Vet, we all wish we had kitties with Davey's personality.

Skeeter is not on any fluids or meds at this point.  In January he showed that he lost about 1 1/2 lbs from his last annual, but hasn't lost any weight since January 08.  Talked to the Vet about him a few weeks ago, he agreed if he is doing good, no need to come in.

He was on totally dry food till he was 11 (January), I think the switch to canned has helped him maintain weight and keep better hydrated.

Keep us posted.

Glad to hear Davey & Elvis lived through their ordeal today.  Now it's just that loooong wait and the nerves as the conversation starts with the vet.  Poor Elvis sounds like my Tessa getting that stressed out.  You hate to put them through it, but don't really have any choice to get the answers you need.

Hopes and prayers that they are both doing well for their age, and no kidney function has been lost.

Elvis is having additional test run on his blood.  Free T4 to check for hyperthyroidism.

Davey's hematocrit is slightly low, so he is going on Petinic supplementation

Both are going on Epakitin and appetite stimulant.  Both their BUN and creatinines are slightly elevated.

Both have potassiums of 4.3.

Davey's BUN actually went down from a previous 45 to 40 currently.  His creatinine stayed the same 3.4.

Elvis' BUN rose from 41 to 45, his creatinine rose from 3.0 to 3.2.

Well at least you have half the story there.  Slight declines in kidney function, slight anemia, posible hyperT.  Wonder why the anemia?  Can't be the kidney function at this point could it?  Sounds like you got the news in plenty of time to start working on treatments and diets.  I hope they respond well to whatever you & vet decide is the best course of action.

Elvis' free-T4 was slightly elevated, 53 (normal range for their lab is 10-50).  I have to discuss with my regular vet when he returns from vacation, starting Tapazole (and the problems with Tapazole and CRF cats).  May have to do another echocardiogram first since he hasn't had one in a year.

JustMe,

Sorry you're having to deal with this.  Hope your boys will be OK.

Ho-boy.  This is where it gets complicated.  From when I was getting thyroid tests run every 3 months on Isis, I know that the older the cat, the more toward the bottom of the ranges on thyroid they like them to be.  So slightly over the top of normal might be "wait and see" with a younger cat, but is looked at with more seriousness in an older one.

But with Elvis' age and beginning CRF, the kidneys may be the primary consideration.  As you know, it's a delicate balance.  Hopes and prayers being sent for finding out just what treatment would be best!

 Kiss Elvis.  and {{{hugs}}} JustMe.
