Many people are not aware that dilated pupils (especially when they stay pretty wide in brighter light) are a sign of high blood pressure in cats.  As with humans, high blood pressure can damage all sorts of body systems, including the brain, heart, kidneys and eyes.  Middle-aged to older cats can have high blood pressure as a result of common diseases in that age group, including kidney disease and hyperthyroid.  Untreated high blood pressure can rapidly lead to detached retinas and blindness in cats.

Just a reminder--if you see unusually wide pupils in your cat, take the cat to the vet right away!  With quick treatment, the sight can sometimes be saved, and other organ damage can be prevented.

(And have your own blood pressure checked at least yearly; more often if you are being treated for high blood pressure.)
