In trying to upgrade the dryfood we bought Purina ONE...Lamb.

Dogs liked it OK
Don't know if there were negative effects we changed brands after about 80 pounds of dry. (Still have some left in the bag...but have not given it since March 1st.)

1996 was the year I first purchased Purina Pro Plan. When the ProPlan became too expensive to feed all the animals, we switched to Purina One, so all three, in addition to our new ones, Dee in 1999 and Baby/Buster in 2000 ate Purina One and ONLY Purina One dog food as their staple.

Early 2000, Thai, ferret:  loss of footing, straw and thinning hair, rapid weight loss, spine protruding through skin - no flesh to cushion, intermittent bleeding through nostrils - first time controllable, second time, Thai was put to rest.   Veterinarian diagnosis: stomach tumors.  Thai ate Purina Pro Plan and Purina One as his staple.

2005, 12-year-old Siamese, Little Foot:  loss of weight, could see and feel bones of spine - no flesh to cushion, coarse and sparse hair, sneezing, loss of appetite, sudden loss of urinary control.  Little Foot died on December 25, 2005 from ARF.  He ate Purina Pro Plan and Purina One.

Late spring, early summer of 2006, Makenzie stopped eating Purina One, so I bought other varieties of Purina One food to get her to eat, all varieties caused the same problems:  coarse hair, shredding and chipped nails, runny eyes, constant ear problems, dermatitis, excessive shedding, intermittent bouts of vomiting yellow bile with chunks of black whatever contained within it, loss of appetite, horrendous halitosis, loss of energy, ate large amounts of grass.

February 14, 2007, Makenzie, 11 yrs:  lame in the right hindquarter, complete loss of appetite, system shutdown, peacefully at rest March 7, 2007.  Tufts Animal Hospital Diagnosis: cancer.  Makenzie ate Purina Pro Plan and Purina One.

1999-07, Dee: coarse hair, shredding and chipped nails, runny eyes, extremely bad and itching dermatitis creating sores and necessary clipping around the "hot spot", extreme shedding, terrible halitosis, loss of energy, ate large amounts of grass, leaves and paper napkins and towels (something I never saw him do at all), yellow bile vomit.  Dee's staple was Purina One.

2000-07 Baby/Buster: coarse hair, shedding, extreme halitosis, lethargy, weight gain.  Baby ate Purina One as his staple.

Other Purina Brands/Variety

Beneful dry: 8/06 and late 1/07 - early 2/07, Makenzie and Dee: loose, mucous encased orange stools, vomitting.

Beneful wet: 4/07, Baby: extreme thirst, lack of appetite, loud meowing, bloody urine, high pH, crystals.  Dee: extreme thirst, lack of appetite, consumption of paper products and leaves, hind quarter soreness, difficulty urinating.

Natural Blends: 1/07, Makenzie: aversion to food, loose stools.

All loved ones, both deceased and living, were brought up in Massachusetts.

Sincerely,
Donna

Hannah was on Beneful for less than two months (last summer).....wicked scratching & loose stool.

Purina One (after Beneful) was no better but her stools got worse.  That was less than a month & I pulled her off it.

I'm in CA.

I had a full-coat Chow on Purina's Prescription JM (Joint Mobility) for hip problems.  Every week to ten days he had nasty diarrhea, but I "excused" it with "he got into something."  The diarrhea was so bad and his butt hair so long he was frequently at the vet's getting bathed (have to knock him out for that!) and a butt shave.  Each time his diarrhea lasted only one day, and then he was back to normal.

I didn't identify the problem as being his food until I switched to BRAND X several months ago.  His stools firmed right up and he's had no diarrhea since.  When everything's the same except the food, you know it's the food!  Mary in KS

I have many large dogs and home cook but it is becoming quite a chore. So I decided to supplement with some dry dog food but don't trust any brand really. So I looked at many premium brands and I chose the Purina Pro Plan for sensitive skin and stomach (Salmon) and gave a quarter of a cup to all the dogs mixed in with their home cooked yesterday.

I noticed no undue changes at all last night. So this morning, which is day two, I did the same thing. Really when one is trying to discover if a dog food is problematic, the dog needs to eat only that food and when dry foods are mixed up where one uses several different brands well, the culprit could be any one of them.

I will keep reporting my progress. I give my dogs Norweign Cod Liver Oil - it's very expensive but I give it to them anyway and will continue as I transition off some, but not all, of the home cooking.

(I also tried doing this a couple of weeks ago with another brand but even a few kibbles caused very loose almost water stools. So I gave the dry dog food away to people that are using it and pleased.)

We have 4 dogs: a setter, a lab, a weimaraner, and a daschund/minpin (?). The lab is the only one with food issues: we believe it is a yeast allergy. His allergies manifest in gas, loose stools, and ear infections. I had been feeding them all Purina One Sensitive Dry for about two years without any problems. I do rotate food occasionally, but Purina Sensitive is a staple in the rotation. They have shiny coats, decent stools, little to no gas, and no ear infections.

The lab has a tendency to lick his paw raw during the summertime, so I had suspected a seasonal allergy. However, when I needed to get more dog food, the store was out of sensitive formula. I checked a bag of adult chicken and it contains no yeast so I got that one. The first thing I noticed was that the food contained two different colored kibble. The second thing I noticed was that the paw licking stopped.

We live in Amelia, OH (outside of Cincinnati) and I shop primarily at Kroger and PetSmart.

Well so far so good with the Purina Pro Plan (Salmon) for sensitive skin and stomachs. All dogs made the transfer just fine - no loose stools or upset. I did cut with cooked rice last week and this week will use just the Purina (no cooked rice). I do supplement with Vit. E and Liquid Cod Liver Oil.

I'm into my second week of feeding Purina Pro Plan (Salmon) for sensitive skin and stomach. All is well. The transition from home cooked went smoothly. Poops firm and normal. No funny smells or problems. All dogs like it. All seem happy. I have more free time and now iinstead of slaving over the stove, I can actually take the dogs for nice long walks!

Ive posted in cat foods by brands, please go read it. Ive gone through bad (dog)experiences with Beneful (purina) , Kibbles & chunks & Good Life Recipe(mars). I have other close to me accounts of other bad purina foods as well. Short version of what could be a LONG story, the foods with both hard crunch pieces & soft chewy pieces were BAD news.
