I am interested in knowing if anyone has had any problems with Purina ProPlan or any other Purina dogfood. I bought a bag of ProPlan and my dogs had really BAD diarrhea. I stopped feeding the food and it went away. Two dogs at my local shelter have died in the past few days. The bloodwork for one of them showed toxins in her system. They were being fed ProPlan.

Danielle said she ran out of food, so Jason picked up a small bag of Purina and the dog was sick for 2 days.

It was me & it was Purina 1 sensitive system dry dog. [my memory stinks too !]It turned out to be vitamin E,I had it tested at Expertox through Accutrace. I didn't have the test done for exact amount because it wasn't a toxin, but the bag was full of it. It looked like someone dumped way too much in during mixing or after it cooked.I never did hear back from Purina despite multiple calls. They did send a refund for all the other food that was in the pantry near it,& a sample collection bag[which I sent registered & have a signature for].I still wonder what they thought it was. I could not find a lot of info about toxic amounts of vit e, but it can & did cause diarhea for 5 wks in 1 of my dogs. It also can cause or make cancer worse.A lot of pf co's use vit e as a natural preservative,& we have been hearing a lot of complaints about gritty food again. If it looks strange, don't use it !

This story is years old but may be an indicator of quality control re:  Pro Plan.  I used to feed it exclusively.  One time I bought two large bags (two different varieties) and found one bag had cat kibbles mixed in it while the other had a white powdery coating over all the kibbles.  The dog for whom I had bought the food that turned out to be coated in white refused to eat it.  Extremely unusual since generally my dogs eat anything not nailed down and ask questions later.  I wrote a letter to Purina explaining that while I was not concerned particularly about my dogs eating a small amount of cat food, it did make me wonder about quality control when it happened at the same time as the other bag w/the white coated kibbles.  And that I WAS concerned about that food and would like them to test it and let me know the results.  I included samples of both foods in the package.
I never heard a word from Purina.  Nothing.

We are going to try to get a lab to test the food. We took the numbers off the bags we have left. We are pretty sure it ws the food.

Welcome cataholic ! Hope your dogs are ok now. I had the unknown toxins screen done on my Purina at Expertox. I went through Accutrace,Teri there is very helpful & knowledgable. Hope you find out what caused it ,but don't hold your breath waiting for the pf co to tell you anything.I think the test is about $295 now & they will need at least 2 cups of food. Just a warning, some of us have food we know is bad & nothing has shown up on multiple tests at multiple labs. Sometimes we just can't find the answer.I hope you can get to the bottom of it & find out what to watch for with your dogs & what treatments they might need.

I stopped ProPlan for the cats back in early 2007 (around Jan/Feb)...just moved to MN had been feeding it to them after getting them switched from Nutro. My cats got real lethargic...hair was a mess - not shiny at all. I knew something wasn't quite right with them....so I stopped the food and they got better.

The ProPlan for dogs (even the one in the white bag) I fed my dogs, but I stopped when the cat food just didn't seem right.....Cotton also stopped eating her lamb formula of ProPlan prior.

The marketing looks really great on the packaging....but the food did not do well for my pets.
