Please be aware that many Chicken Jerky treat brands that are manufactured in China have been making small dogs very ill along with killing them.  Symptoms are: lethargy, vomiting, diareha,  and anorexia (total lack of appetite except for the treats).  To see this alert from the American Veterinarian Medical Association go to www.avma.org/ click on Pet Food Alert line and then click on Chicken Jerky Treat alert.)

Our two adorable Cavalier King Charles puppies, Lacie, 11 months, and Misty 7 months old, had been eating Smoke House Chicken Jerky treats from Petsmart on a daily basis (not as a supplement for their food, but as a treat after their evening meal).  They both became very ill in July with the same symptoms, such as; lethargy, vomiting, diarrea, and anorexia (total lack of appetite except for the treats, which they loved and looked forward to).  The test started showing signs of kidney failure which made no sense to the vets because Misty and Lacie are not related, and Kidney failure is rare with puppies.  Both puppies received extensive care in the hospital along with test after test trying to figure out what was wrong with them.  Vet bills started mounting up to over $9,000.  Every meal had to be force fed except their nightly jerky treat which they got very excited about.

Mid September we found out about the AVMA warning, and immediatelty stopped giving them these treats,  Our little seven month old Misty rallied and got better, but our sweet little Lacie never got better and this weekend our precious little 11 month old Lacie got much worse, and had to be put down at 5:30 last night.  We were able to pray with her and love on her as she peacefully went to be with the Lord.  She surely took a piece of my heart with her.  I have been through a lot in my life, but I have never been through the extreme roller coaster pain that we have been going through in the last four months.

I wish someone had warned us about this product.  I thought this product was American made.  Only after I saw the warning, did I see in small print on the bottom of the package, made in China.  I didn't know it, but this jerky treat has been making dogs sick well before April 2007.  If someone had warned us, Lacie could have been spared this past painful four months of treatment, let alone having her princess life robbed from her at such a young age.  Lacie was the most adorable sweet little feminine angel.  She loved people so much that I was planning on having her be a therapy dog so that her and I could help people that are ill.

Please spread the word.  After I send this to all the Cavalier breeders.  I am going to send this warning to the other small breeds.  It is so sad that I have to do this, but as long as Pets Mart and Costco and other stores only care about their profit margin we will have to protect our sweet little puppies on our own.

I know Lacie would never have wanted any other dog and owner to go through the pain and agony that she and her mommy and daddy have gone through.  Lacie was our little angel and I don't want her to have died in vain,  So I will not give up on spreading the word about these poisonous treats.

Sincerely,

Barbara Fafard

I'm SO sorry about Lacie's passing to the bridge.  Cry

i have a HUGE issue that the companies' responses are that they are over fed and that is the problem. i'm a raw feeder going on 6 yrs. don't tell me chicken breast is deadly unless it's only used as a treat!!! and yes, i feed it cooked and dehydrated also. i also bought dehydrated duck treats. OMG, i almost had a heart attack when i learned it was made in China. SO sad that those of us that want to give healthy pure treats have to go over the top to find them.

again, i am SO sorry for the loss of Lacie. Continued good health for Misty.

I am very sorry for your loss.  Peace be with you.

Sending sympathy from myself and Nik as well. So sorry to hear about your loss. I had bought dehydrated duck and chicken as a treat but tossed it after reading about it on this site.  I have some jerkey chicken from Plato but found it irregular so into the trash bin it goes. So frustrating.

Peace from Mia and Nik

Barbara I'm so sorry that you lost your Lacie! I know your heart must be breaking right now.

Below are some links to other jerky treats as well as comments that mention the Smoke House brand which I don't believe have ever been recalled. Why can't the powers that be stop this insane poison food from coming into our country!!

Hi, this is Barbara, Lacie's mother.  Thank you so much for all of your kind words.  We miss Lacie so much.  In a week we are going to be getting a new cavalier puppy.  Her parents are Lacie's father and Misty's mother, so she will be a half sister to Misty.  We have named her Mercy because the night before she died, my heart was breaking, because she had been such a great trooper but I could tell she was loosing her fight.  I pleaded with God that he would bless us with his Mercy, and that if she was not going to make it, that he would not allow her to go through anymore needless suffering,  The next evening our vet advised us that she was indeed losing the battle and that it was time to make the decision to let her die in dignity.

When my 12 year old grandson heard that Lacie had lost her fight, he cried and cried.  So when we found out that our breeder had this new little blenheim cavalier puppy that had just been born, I asked him to name our new puppy.  Not knowing what I prayed the night before she died, he said I think we should name her Mercy.  I knew beyond a shadow of doubt, that Mercy would be our new puppies name, because God truly showed us his Mercy, and took her home when she was too tired to fight the fight anymore.

Please pray that other dogs will not have to suffer from these poisonous treats that are sold everywhere.

Barbara:

I am so sorry about your beloved puppy.......I cried when I read your post.  It's so sad that these toxic treats are still on the shelves & people are unknowingly feeding them to their pets.  I don't know what's wrong with big business these days because they don't care about anything but their profit.

I have been trying to pass the word to everyone I know about these chicken jerky treats.......we heard about them a while back here on Itchmo.......I immediately threw my bag away & thank God my Hannah was ok.

I hope Mercy & Misty have a long & wonderful life with you & your family.

The best way to keep up to date on the latest is to check back here regularly.  I believe with all my heart that this site saved a lot of our beloved pets from a terrible fate.  It was an absolute blessing last year......most of what was posted here was never announced publicly so that's how I kept up to date on the latest & kept my friends up to date.

Please keep us up to date on your pups. Grin

Barbara,

I am so sorry for your little Lacey.

My heart breaks reading that story.

Mercy is going to be one lucky little puppy and what a way to honor Lacey's memory.

God Bless you and your family.
