Washington Animal Rescue League
71 Oglethorpe Street, NW
Washington, DC 20011
Medical Center: 202-726-CARE (2273)

Q: What is the Rescuer’s Food Bank?
A: Building on a successful holiday program established nearly a decade ago, the League now hosts a permanent community pet food and toy bank. Its aim is to help families hold on to and care for their animal companions, even under the current economic challenges.
The Rescuer’s Food Bank is supported entirely through private donations.

Q: How can I support the Rescuer’s Food Bank?
A: Donation of dry or wet dog or cat food can be brought to the League at any time when the shelter is open
. Dry food should be in unopened bags; wet food should be in relatively undamaged aluminum cans.   The program also collects and distributes toys and basic supplies like cat litter, beds, dog leashes, etc.

Q: Do you accept cash donations to the food bank?
A: Yes, you can support the food bank with a monetary donation, which you can make on our online donation page or through the mail (Rescuer’s Food Bank, The Washington Animal Rescue League, 71 Oglethorpe Street, NW, Washington, DC  20011).

Q: Can the League pick up donations?
A: The League may be able to pick up large-scale donations if arrangements are made ahead of time.  To look in to this possibility, please call 202-726-2556, ext. 342.

Q: Who is eligible to receive food from the Food Bank?
A: Any current, low-income Medical Center client is automatically eligible to receive food and supplies from the Rescuer’s Food Bank.  Others may also be eligible if they live in the District of Columbia and meet our income guidelines.  To see if they are eligible, interested people may call the League’s Medical Center at 202-726-2273.

Q: What if I have more questions about the Food Bank?
A: Contact the Medical Center at 202-726-2556, ext. 342..

Dog Owner Has Change of Heart

OGLETHORPE ST. NW, 300 block, Oct. 6. A woman and her son took their two dogs to the league to make them available for adoption. The woman said that she had lost her job and car and had to walk to the league to drop off the animals and that she had no money to feed the dogs. After a staff member told the woman about the free food from the league's pet food bank program, she decided to keep the dogs. A staff member drove the family home.

Additionally, the mobile clinic is used for:

- mobile adoptions
- emergency response -- CAC is a first-responder for the District of Columbia!
- distribution of pet food and supplies to needy families

This is all that's on the website about pet food.  The HSUS list indicates they have some type of pet food program for those in need; suggest contacting the organization if you are in the area and need help.

Pet Food for Families in Need DC/ MD/ VA

Our church will be collecting food for pets of all kinds like dogs, cats, fish, rabbits, birds etc. This is a ministry of our church.

Because of economic hardship, we've learned that a lot of pet owners have been forced to give up their pets to animal shelters or abandon them. Shelters are overcrowding because pet owners simply cannot afford to keep their pets. We would like to help and we encourage you to join us as we help them. If you would like to help a pet, please contact Pastor Greg Kelley at
Gministerkelley@aol.com

We are a bona fide church and your donations are tax deductible. As a church we are automatically tax exempt under federal law.

There are many ways you can help:

Canine Food of all Kinds- dry and canned
Feline Food of all Kinds- dry and canned
Canine & Feline Treats of all Kinds
Small Animal Foods like Rabbit, Ferret, Fish, Bird etc
Pet Blankets & Foldable Crates
