Windows Live Essentials 2011, Microsoft's suite of consumer apps designed to complement Windows. The suite includes the photo manager/editor Windows Live Photo Gallery, video editor Windows Live Movie Maker, and IM client Windows Live Messenger.

I replaced Avast with Live Security Essentials to get the real time malware protection and that's been a bit of a system resource hog, but not too bad, certainly no where near as irritating as Norton.

Are you using this on XP, Vista or Windows 7, Steve? And how are you finding the different tools?
What do you think of Live Mail as an Outlook Express replacer if you're using it?

I don't use Live Essentials.  The two main systems here right now are Win XP SP3 and a New Windows 7 Toshiba Laptop.

For security I use Norton Internet Security, Malwarebytes, and for automatic Software Updating Secunia PSi. On both the XP and 7 machines.

For email I use Gmail imap'd to my local install of Firebird.  And two professional email setups provided by a hosting provider.  I have Firefox, Opera, IE, and Chrome installed and use them for different purposes.  Firefox get's the most use.

For external backups I have a One Terabyte external drive.  I have a local server setup, Apache 2.2 for offline developing work, and I use the PC Tools password generator for complex passwords. One FTP software program for uploading to servers, and for photo editing I use Infraview.

Other then that all the rest is pretty much basic stock stuff. Office, Wordpad, Notepad, etc.
