For those of you who are not aware, a major flaw in Internet Explorer, the browser (application used to connect to the Internet) used by millions, was revealed over the weekend.  At first, it was thought to affect only IE 9, the most current version, but now apparently all versions of IE down to IE 6 have been shown to be vulnerable.

What this problem does is allows hackers a "hole" through which they can take over a computer if the user visits certain malicious websites--which just about anyone could do accidentally by clicking on an innocent-looking link.

The problem is so bad that the German government has advised everyone in the country to use some other browser until Microsoft issues a patch for this vulnerabilty in IE!.

All of you who are using IE, and who can't manually install and reconfigure with the EMET toolkit as mentioned in the article, might want to consider downloading and using Firefox or Google Chrome temporarily.  (Chrome is hard to get rid of once you download it, though.)

This does not affect people who do not use Windows as an operating system, like those with Apple computers or other OS.

Thanks, catbird.  Unfortunately, I am so computer illiterate that I could never do the "fix", and I am still using a dial-up connection, so I am not about to take hours to download any other browser. So, I guess I'll take my chances.  I'm not a defense contractor!   Cheesy

Actually, I am currently having a problem with my Yahoo mail.  Internet Explorer keeps encountering a problem and shutting down when I do certain things there, but not with any consistency or with doing the same thing each time.  It is driving me batty and I can't figure it out!  It doesn't happen on any other website or even on any other Yahoo pages.  I can't find any way to communicate with Yahoo to ask about the problem.  If an answer is not on their Help page, too bad!   Roll Eyes  Not looking for help - just venting!   Grin

Mandycat,

I'm on dial-up too, and I use Firefox, IE is way too slow for my liking. It really does not take that long to download FF if you do it when you are not using the computer anyway and it will make browsing a lot faster. I also have XP for my OS system. But you do have to close down the computer and reboot every now and then to speed things up and get rid of the temp memory files. I do mine about once a week.

I also use Thunderbird for my email program.

This is the download link--it's not hard to install at all-just download it and say "yes" to the questions about whether you accept the terms, and so on.  Not any different than an Adobe or other update.  The installer does the rest.  Last I read, MS expects to have something more permanent in a few days.

Some time ago, I had a Yahoo account and had issues.  I couldn't delete old e-mails I'd sent there because I was changing computers (there were a few hundred).  When I contacted them, they told me there was no problem as I had to give them permission to access my account, which I did. I went back to the account and tried deleting--no luck, so I contacted them again.  They again insisted there was no problem.  Not long after that, Yahoo made news as they had a large problem with their e-mail system.  I'd sort of given up on it, but thought I would see if the account worked after their outage.  Only after that, could I finally delete those e-mails!  Shocked  I'm thinking the issue may not be with the mail interface itself but with some of the ads you're served when you're working there, since it doesn't happen every time.  So many expect that high speed internet is a "given" and a lot of the ads are made to work with people on those conections.

I thought about it maybe being ads loading on the page that were somehow interfering.  I guess there is nothing I can do about that, though.  Other than being a little slow, no doubt because of my dial-up, I never had the problem until last week.  I did a Google search and I found some recent complaints about the same thing - one of them just yesterday on the Yahoo Community site.  So, others seem to be having the problem also.  It is just frustrating because I can't find a way to communicate with Yahoo to report the problem.  I found on another website that was a big complaint by many others - no good customer service and no way to call anyone.  Undecided

Mandycat - I'm having similar problems with IE & email - when I click on some emails to read/answer them, it shuts down.  Mine seems to be associated with the new version of AVG anti-virus software I updated recently.  They are having problems with it causing problems with IE, Firefox, and other browsers.  Maybe your Yahoo problem is created with another program too.

I have dialup and when I need to update with a big download, I get on another computer with fast access and download it to a flashdrive (office computer or access wi-fi on my laptop at the library).  Maybe you can do downloads that way.

That is exactly what is happening to me.  I read something tonight about it possibly being caused by Adobe Flash Player not being updated.  Apparently the Yahoo mail doesn't always work well without an updated version of that.  I am going to try downloading the update and see what happens.  I also had a recent update to my McAfee and also Microsoft recently downloaded updates for XP. So, if the Adobe update doesn't work, maybe I have to look into the other two recent downloads for an answer. It sure is frustrating not to be able to read all my mail at one time!  I can usually read one or two messages before it shuts down.  I was watching carefully tonight, and it did seem that some ad with "action" was partially downloaded when it shut down.  Do you have your Adobe Flash Player updated to the latest version?

Thanks for the tip on the downloads!  I am going to get DSL soon, hopefully, but I have to figure out what I have to do to install it.  Computers are not my strong suit, so I need step by step instructions on everything!   Cheesy

Microsoft issued an "out of band" update for Internet Explorer this afternoon which fixes the problem.  You can get it by going to Windows Update.  The problem affects all versions of Internet Explorer except IE 10, which is still in beta version.

I assume that the fix from Microsoft was for the original flaw for which this thread was started, right?  I did have an automatic update from Microsoft today. Thank you.

I also downloaded an update for Adobe Flash Player, and it appears that my Yahoo mail problem is solved.  Petslave, if you still have the problem, maybe you can try the Adobe update if you don't have the latest update.

Thanks for telling me about Adobe, Mandycat.  I'll try that & see if it helps. 

Glad the IE fix is out now.  My brother was asking me about downloading Firefox, which daunted him.  I told him to wait until they had the fix out, but it is handy to have 2 browsers available.  When something doesn't work on your preferred browser, you can switch to the other until you have the problem fixed.

My Yahoo mail is still working just fine today!  I do think I found the answer to my problem.  I hope that updating the Adobe Flash Player works for you too.   Smiley

Just wanted to report to you that the Adobe Flash Player fix didn't totally fix my problem, though it seemed improved at first.  After much searching, I found a Yahoo help forum and many, many complaints about Yahoo mail shutting down posted under various wording of the problem. I posted there on several of the threads.  Finally, an actual Yahoo person posted some information in response saying that Yahoo was aware of the problem and their engineers were working on a solution.  From the various posts, it is obvious that this problem started around the middle of September and has continued to this day and that many people are experiencing it.  However, I am hoping that Yahoo finds the solution very soon because it is getting very frustrating. Are you continuing to have the problem?

I didn't get to download the new flash player yet, Mandycat, was hoping to get to it at work tomorrow.  I am still having a lot of trouble, not just with IE but also Firefox and Opera, which I downloaded recently to try to avoid the IE problems.  I think my slow dial-up is part of it, plus the new AVG seems to be causing a lot of problems for everyone.  I'll let you know if I run across a real fix, if there actually is a single one.
