My cats love the toy mice, and one of them puts the mice in their water dish. Well, the colored mice get wet, and colors run off them staining the carpet. Also makes me wonder if the ink used to color them are safe.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

It would depend on the particular dye, I guess. The thing that would concern me here is the color running off into the cat's water. Many coloring agents do have toxins. Around the time I stopped being a painter, some artists were starting to wear plastic gloves when painting due to these concerns. On the other hand, food coloring agents are supposedly safe. (?!) You would think they would use only non-toxic, stable dyes on pet toys but as we've seen, we can't always depend on industry "safeguards".
I think I would discard the water when I found a toy in it, rinse the dish well and replace with fresh. And maybe try to find some toys with colors that won't bleed off when wet, if that's possible.

One of my cats puts his toy mice in water all the time. I don't trust the dyes in pet toys from China, so I make my own mice (there is a thread here on the subject.) I mostly use old, many-times-washed fabric, that isn't going to release anything.
If it were me, I'd find different cat toys. I wouldn't trust that the the dyes are good for the cats, who are licking the toys and carrying them in their mouths.

I think I would train the kitty not to put their toys in the water..........ah ha, just kidding, as I have learned with my Sophers that is impossible......her birdy has been drowned many times, its kind of pitiful hearing birdy going chuglp, chuglup rather than the normal chirp-chirp....

This is kind of off topic, but....Fizzy's favorite mouse is called Dead Popper. It was my previous cat's favorite (Patches). When we brought Fizzy home for the shelter, she found it and claimed it. It is a black furry mouse. Most of the fur has been licked off. DH has glued the plastic mouse body back together several times, and sewn the tail back on. I have accidently vacuumed it and recovered it from the bag. I accidently washed it in the washing machine a few months ago. Only a little discoloration on one other item! Guess it was faded from years of love. I keep thinking it has seen it's last day, but DH says "NO, I'll fix it for Fizzy." Gotta love the guy.

I used to get mine the fake furry mice too. One of mine managed to place one in the toilet, and that was a real eye opener when I saw it in there.
Now I go for the made in US toys, or make my own. It's bad enough they are MIC, but who knows what kind of fur they are using, what kind of tanning chemicals, or dyes.

OK Mickey, tell your kitties to stop sending kitty osmosis thru the internet thingy.......Sophers has a black mouse (OK, I admitted it ) and she has never dunked her black mousey in her water bowl, ever!.......until this morning......either your cats are sending mind-messages to the other kitties here or Sophers can read. Or perhaps they know instinctively that these black mouseys need a good washing....

ha ha That's funny that your cat did that!
You would hope they wouldn't put dangerous chemicals in pet toys- even if your cat doesn't dunk it in water, their saliva might be enough to make the ink run. But you can't trust these companies. I buy from a good store, but they probably don't check every company.
I will look for that thread on toys. Thanks.

This is so funny! My big orange tabby used to do this with his favorite foam ball. He walked around the house with it in his mouth -like a dog! He would put it in his water bowl while drinking, but we thought it was just to guard it. He'd pick it back up when he was done and drip all over.

My tabby, Jake, loves to take the tie from the Sunday paper (it is some kind of white maybe nylon-plasticky thing). Anyway, he drops it around the food bowl....He would have an entire stack of them if I didn't throw the ties out.
He also loves stealing my daughter's rubber bands for hair (the ones coated in black thread so they don't tug hair out. He drops these in and around the water bowl.
He's a compulsive little guy.
