We tried our first Weruva tonight, Paw Lickin' Chicken,  5 out of 5 cats gave it a paws up.  My 2 oldsters devoured it.  Been looking for something to wet their appetite.  Will post back if any problems.

P.S.  It is really bland tasting stuff but the old guys liked it.  Smiley

Yes, I did taste it.   Tongue

None of us had tummy problems with it.   Tongue  24 hours later.

Not much chicken in those cans though, lots of thickener.  I don't why they need so much thickener.  Huh  Where's the beef?

bought my first few cans of the Aussie BBQ. It looks like real food. Real prices of flakey fish with skin and everything. Phil loves it. I'm slowly mixing it with his current avoderm select cuts. I love that stuff too but I find it difficult to find at petstores near me.

I do find the gravy a little strange. Its much thicker than I was expecting. I was hoping it would be soupier.

My cats pretty much rejected Nine Liver and Green Eggs.  They have, however, consumed three different meals of Paw Lickin',  with no vomiting.  Yesterday even the notorious I-hate-everything Phantom actually licked some of the gravy!  (My cats are all gravy lovers.)

Is anyone else seeing diarrhea issues on this food? That's my only complaint, but we've had about 5 really bad episodes.

The smell was worse then any other diarrhea he's ever had. The vet believes the odor I described to her was fat gone bad in the food, possibly from the summer heat; although I'm now throwing away any food not eaten in 5 minutes or so & we've still had a couple episodes since then. Without getting to grossly specific, the diarrhea poop is quite thick, sticks to him & has a horrible smell. He's had a haircut or 3 back there lately.........

I'm not planning on changing brands at this time (don't know what I'd change to with my Cat's issues!), but wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Geff -
I don't use this food, but have you noticed whether the diarrhea occurs after eating any one particular flavor of this food?  From your post I am assuming that this is not happening every day and that is why I asked.

He's only eating 2 flavors due to his allergies: Paw Lickin' Chicken & 9 Livers.

I THINK I've noticed 1 pattern; but I'm not certain yet:

As others have mentioned, each can (NOT each batch, but EACH CAN) is a little different from the others. I'm starting to think that he's having more problems with the occasional can that has tons of coagulated fat. I'm not certain of this yet.

I got the impression that the consensus on the can to can variance is that it's real food cooked in small batches by a small company. I haven't investigated this company like I have previous ones as I was out of options when we found Weruva, & was just horribly grateful to find something he could eat.

Sadly, in some ways I believe the PF industry is currently in much worse shape now then before the recall. The trend of making cat food with ingredients that yuppie humans would feed themselves (& that are awful for cats) has really increased since the recall (that rant was NOT directed at Weruva; they largely seem to be an exception to that!).

Other then the diarrhea, I've been happy with this food. He likes it, it's reasonably priced, the ingredients seem good, others have assured me that Thailand tends to be safe, it's the only food in his 12 years that he's never thrown up (along with the similar Sheba), (with Sheba I'm referring to the Thailand packed Sheba meat only, not the dinners which seem to have some questionable ingredients), & his back sensitivity is gone.

But man, that diarrhea is gross!

I have been feeding the Paw Lickin' a few times per week, with positive results.  I have not noticed any loose stools from the cats, but I have not seen any cans with coagulated fat (yet), either.

My cats did have delayed vomiting with the Funky Chunky flavor.

I have 4 cats and began feeding Weruva back in March. Over the last 4+ months their wet food diet has increased to about 90% Weruva. (They are eating either Orijen or Go Natural Fish dry). Initially I was attracted to their line because of the large variety of fish flavors (one cat seems to be particularly allergic to chicken, though that is still not confirmed). The most enjoyed flavor seems to be the Mack and Jack. Here are reactions to the other flavors I know I've tried

Outback Grill (Trevali and Berramundi) - Cats thought these fish were nasty.
Marbella Paella (Shrimp, Calamari, Mussel, Mackerel) - I think I'd like it on linguini, but my cats didn't really go for the tougher shellfish.
Mack And Jack (Red Tuna, Mackerel, Grilled Skip Jack) - usually the quickest eaten. They get one can of this per day.
Polynesian BBQ - (Sardine, Tuna, Red Bigeye) - Depends on the can, sometimes they like it and sometimes they don't
Meow Luau (Mackerel, Aloe) - I try to be as grain free as possible, I do not understand why baby corn is in the food. I pick it out if I can. It gets eaten, but not always all of it.
Mediterranean Harvest (Tuna) - I like this one because it also has some veggies which always look good. I have to mash it up real well to get them to eat it, but they do. They will not eat whole peas and potato chunks though.
Mideast Feast (Tuna, Grilled Tilapia) - Probably the second most favorite.

Of the chicken ones, I don't like them as much because they seem to contain less food than the fishy flavors.  However, they seem to eat Grandma's Chicken Soup and Paw Licken Chicken without complaint. They just don't get it often.
Nine Liver was scoffed at.
Steak Frites was also a non-starter.
Peking Ducken - I tried this one for the first time last week and they seemed to really enjoy it. However, from experience my cats like Duck every once in a while, but get sick of it if I feed it too often.
I believe On the Cat Wok, and Green Eggs and Chicken either I have not tried or they didn't like.

I like to water the Weruvas down a little bit because with the thickening agents it makes a decent broth that my cats really like - which helps make sure they are getting enough water, especially in the summer.

I am curious to what others think of the ingredients. I admit I'm a bit leery of the fact they come from Thailand, given recent news of sweatshop practices in the fish canning business. I also wish they would use brown rice instead of white which has no nutritional value. Also does anybody else think the whole pieces of corn in the cat food just flies in the face of grain free?

Ben,

We've gone over a week without the diarrhea until today. The last week or so, it's been much cooler then normal for summer until today. Today the temp was near 80. The new can I opened today also had a good dose of coagulated fat on top.

I guess what I need to figure out now is whether the culprit is spoiled fat packed in the can, or this food can't tolerate heat over 75 even for 5 minutes, or a combination of both.

Either option concerns me regarding quality control, but again I know of NO other food this cat can tolerate.

Out of curiosity, which food are you having the congealed fat on the top? That is common with Mack and Jack, and I just use a prong of the fork to gently slice the fat off and discard it. My cats didn't seem to like it so much.

Also of note, is that when cans are packed into cases, some are packed right side up, and some are packed up side down. So you may also see this at the bottom of the can.

Sometimes I feel REALLY DUMB. What a great common sense suggestion (skim off the fat)...... DUH!

He only eats Paw Lickin' Chicken & 9 Livers due to allergies. Fat seems to be worse with 9 Livers.

                                      Thanks (-:

Mack&Jack
5.5oz

Best by Feb 2011

It's been a while since they had a fish meal, and since I'm home all day with all 4, and due to having a dented Mack&Jack  Smiley , I decided to try it out.

On opening it, I was surprised to see it full to the top, packed with chopped fish.  Just a little gel around the rims.  I stirred it up and it looked pretty good.  Actually, it looks a lot like Solid Gold Tuna, but with less jelly.    I might even want to add water in this next time.

Anyway, 3 of 4 happily ate it (they ate about 1~1.5 tbsp each).  I left about 2 tbsp to see if anyone will nibble on it later.

Just tried a couple of cans to see if it would be possible to add some of the flavors that don't have veggies into our rotation.  We tried the Paw Lickin Chicken and the Mack & Jack and both cats went crazy for both flavors.  Empty bowls and not just empty but totally licked clean!  They had a can for dinner last night and also the night before last.  No problems, no diarhhea, no vomiting.  I'm happy because they have started refusing some of the other brands and I have been looking for alternatives.  The only thing I don't feel great about is the menadione on the ingredient label, but they have got to eat something and the rest of the ingredients seem really good.
