Mandycat, I wonder about the reliability of info from September 2007 on the canned 6 to 6.5 pH, given the fact that Wellness has changed hands. Just questioning an almost three year
time gap and a change of ownership is all.

Thanks for the headsup nchingo.  We have one male cat who had struvite and a female who had oxalate crystals when they were on mostly dry food prior to 2007.  All of our cats have been on Wellness canned for the past 3 years, and we haven't seen a problem, although we don't test pH. From 2007-2009, they were on Wellness canned almost exclusively.  12 to 16 cats ages kitten to 19-years-old during the last 3 years. Guess I'll buy some of those strips and start checking.

3cat, You could be right. I don't use Wellness so I am not familiar with any changes in the formulas.  However, the website does state that the food is low Magnesium (0.02% according to the guaranteed analysis) and contains cranberries and blueberries to provide for urinary tract health.  Magnesium is a big culprit in the formation of struvite crystals and stones, and all the prescription diet foods also have low Magnesium for that reason.  C/D, for example, also has Magnesium of 0.02%. The prescription foods have a urine acidifier instead of cranberries and blueberries, which are suppose to serve that purpose in Wellness.  Probably the best way to find out exactly what urine pH the formula is suppose to maintain is to write to the company for the latest information.  The quote I found on the thread I referred to might have been obtained that way at that time.

mandycat- agree that writing/calling the company to find out what urinary pH the food is supposed to produce is probably best, however most foods (unless designed to prevent struvite in which case a lower pH or prevent calcium oxcalate sp??? in which case a higher pH) strive for the ideal (6-6.5) pH. My guess is wellness will say 6-6.5, this does not seem to be the case though with a majority of the cats on the yahoo flutd group showing >6.6 pH. Not to say it does this for every cat, cause some yahoo flutd members test pH and still use the food with no trouble. Just wanted to mention it here to see if people are experiencing the same thing and to give those with urinary issue furkids a heads up.

Just curious, if anyone has FLUTD (urinary issue) kitties eating this and if so have you noticed a problem with increased urine pH? The folks at yahoo FLUTD group (many of whom routinely test urine pH) have noticed a general trend for wellness canned and pouches to produce a higher than normal urine pH. Many members there avoid this food for that reason since their kitties are already crystal prone. My own FLUTD boy has tried and loved wellness food, but I am scared to make it a large part of his diet since too many FLUTD Group members have noticed increased pH for it to simply be a coincidence or testing error. Struvite are the stones formed in high pH, my Meech made Silica which can form in any pH (lucky me) so I really watch his urine volume and pH levels.
We feed Wellness canned Turkey, chicken, Beef & Chicken, and once a week the Turkey &Salmon flavour. We also will feed some Evo cat and kitten, Evo 95% line of the Turkey and Chicken, and now just started with Feline Holistic select canned Chicken and Lamb. Shadow had struvite crystals many years ago when she was on dry food, but has not had a problem since switching to the all wet food.
Magnesium and Ash were once thought to be the problems, but studies have shown that its not the leading contributing factor to UTI'S

I just tried Wellness canned kitten & it was a HIT. Are there any current known issues? Are they still using Menu?

I started my 5 kittens with Wellness canned and it was a big hit (then again, they'd never eaten anything else before so anything probably would have been a hit lol).

All 4 cases I bought were smooth and creamy and yummy in the tummy.

Then I ordered another 5 cases and so far all of these ones are like ground beef that I really have to mash mash mash in order to get a consistency the kittens like.  In fact, it's gotten to the point that if I don't dust it with freeze-dried meat, they won't touch it (they're also now eating adult Wellness canned).

But we have not had any issues -- just desperately trying to finish off the last 3 cases of it!

August, I stopped buying hills science diet for the very same reason - inconsistent consistancies.  It would go from cake like to pie filling like from batch to batch.  And the last one was almost like stew and the cats hated it.

Has anyone used the April dates of the 3oz cans Turkey Flavor with success?

Also... I'm not thrilled if I'm reading right that Wellness has gone into PetSmart.  I hope this doesn't mean that their product will soon become mass marketed crap!  Aside from just being Petsmart - they are no bargain in prices.  They are more expensive with catfood then my local smaller pet stores.

cats8398 same thing here. Find that the local Pet Supplies Plus is the most reasonable on price.

We use Wellness 5oz turkey exclusively, and it has been completely consistent.  The chicken has a weird grainy texture so we quit using it, and as I recall the rest of the grain-free varieties had 2 protein sources (__ & chicken).

Where we live, Wellness is manufactured at the American Nutrition Plant (MW cans)-- I wonder if the Menu foods-packed cans have more consistancy issues?

We've got the Jan '13 Turkey and it's hit or miss depending on the day, but I've noticed no issues.

2 Larges had diarrhea issues with their favorite Turkey & Salmon (currently using Dec '12 in 5.5 oz), and now it seems that almost all the Larges and the Tinies are avoiding this flavor, even though it used to be their favorite hands-down.

They might be avoiding it only because I just bought a case of it though.   Angry

Anytime Rico doesn't like a food, Ernie won't eat it either.  If I feed Ernie 1st, no issue.  Proof of conspiracy.
