New Jersey: Since the recalls started and after a lot of research on Ichmo, I began feeding my many cats Orijen. After reading many posts here on the Itchmo forums, and after many emails to the owner of the company, I decided to try it. My cats all eat it and seem to like it. The owner was especially helpful, and answered all my questions with great thoroughness and patience. We exchanged many emails and he inspired confidence in me. So far my cats seem fine.
I am hoping for other comments on the Orijen dry cat food.
EDITED BY JUSTME: I had to delete the reference to other brands. Please feel free to post them in the appropriate brand for each product. Thanks for your help.

Winnipeg, Canada. I have been feeding Orijen as well as their other product (see Acana thread). My cats have had no problems with it. Their fur has become very shiny and soft and they don't go to the litterbox as much. All their blood tests have been normal. They get picky after awhile and want to switch to something else, but they eventually go back to the Orijen. One thing to note, though. As of May 2007, Champion Pet Foods had to change their formulation for Orijen as the botanicals they were using were not all on the AAFCO approved list. In order for them to ship to the US, they had to meet certain requirements. As such, a cat that was eating the old formulation may not enjoy the new as the taste has likely changed as well.
If anyone is interested in the email conversation with their nutritionist, I will post it.

Atlanta. Orijen is the dry kibble option for my 3 cats (rotated with another dry kibble option - they have one primary kibble at this moment & 2 rotational). 2 out of 3 eat it for one meal or the other (their choice, as they seem to pick the primary or the rotational at alternate meals on their own volition). The 3rd is ultimate picky and seldom eats it as a meal serving but will take a bite or two when she is "grazing" for a snack/desert. All are fed wet brands by other manufacturers morning & night.

Toronto, Canada. My two cats (17 and 11) enjoy Orijen kibble and I rotate it with another similar grain-free kibble. They are eating this in a 50:50% proportion with wet. Some days they will turn their noses up at the wet, and I am comfortable that they will always fill up on their kibble. They have both put on much-needed weight, and their coats and energy levels have improved from when they were on a prescription kibble.

This is one of our kibble choices.
We're switching from EVO & INNOVA to Orijen. So far, all kitties like it and have had no problems with vomiting or loose stools.

Ohio. My cats love this food. As it is not available in my area, I mainly use it to supplement their regular kibble for a bit of variety.

Arabiannikki recommended I give Orijen a try. This was a good opportunity to do so. I had mixed my KumpiKat and Serengeti together (long story) and my cats would not eat it mixed. So I ordered some more KumpiKat, but in the meantime...my cats needed to eat. So I found a story locally that has Orijen for cats and dogs.
I bought a couple of the trial sizes. My cats ate it right away. The aroma is good. The kibble size compared to the KumpiKat or Serengeti is a little larger. Because it is not overly crunchy then a senior cat or any cat with sensitive teeth should not have any issues eating it...reminds me of looking at an arrowhead.
Thanks!

thought I would post the before and after orijen pix... they love cracking the shapes... first one did so well on orijen, had to get a second kitty. second kitty was very thin and hungry, ate like a vacuum cleaner so I fed her his left over crumbs too. I credit orijen with her putting on 1 pound in 10 days... and she slowed down eating when she caught up... we supplement with a bit of other food too: boiled chicken, shrimp, baked turkey, fish, gerbers stage 2 turkey, lamb, chicken, all of which vet approved. Even the orijen.

NJ I have been feeding Orijen for a while now, and my cats have loved it, and I have felt it was safe. Just now I opened a new bag, lot 80760 best by Oct 13, 2008, and it is DIFFERENT!! The kibble is the shame shape, but about half the size. I was shocked, not realizing they were going to make any changes. I could have forgiven the change in the size of the kibble, but in addition, my 20 cats would not eat it, and they were hungry. I am beside myself. I have no other dry food in the house, I felt so confident when I bought this large bag the other day, and used up my old before opening the new bag. I have emailed the owner of Orijen just now, and await a reply hopefully tomorrow or at least soon. Has anyone else been using the NEW Orijen kibble from the date I quoted above?,..... the new smaller size? Are you cats OK eating it? Have you had any problems? Why can't the PF people just leave a good thing alone!!! Or is the good food just a ploy to get us hooked and then they change to cheaper ingredients etc.etc. My cats are not stupid and they know the difference. I am at my wits end!!! I really can't take any more doubts and fears! This post is also at this location and comments and discussion should be directed there.http://www.itchmoforums.com/news-recall-related/orijen-dog-foodwow-t311.0.html;msg21573#msg21573edited by db

Can we start a fresh thread on this topic? Anyone looking for a discussion on Orijen cat food might not bother to read a 13 page thread titled "Orijen Dog Food...Wow!!"
This area is not for discussion, it is for your experience with food. Sorry about the length of the other thread, start one yourself if you are so inclined.

I recently bought a trial size bag. My cats loved it. They weren't touching their regular food once I put the Orijen down. One of my cats was vomiting it up, but that appears to be because she wasn't chewing it well. Unfortunately due to health issues with two of my four cats I can't feed it exclusively (too high in phosphorus), but I will continue to feed it as a treat.

Kansas City. We just switched to Orijen from one of those brands discussed on Itchmo having lab reports of acetaminophen found in that brand's dog food to Orijen brand. Since the dog and cat foods shared many of the same ingredients, I was concerned about that brand.
Our cat immediately liked Orijen dry cat food, in fact she prefers it to the prior brand dry food. The reports of kibble size and color differences are discussed on their site with them suggesting that it was normal. There haven't been any stool issues thus far and no need to mix and switch.
The maker is Champion Pet Foods in Alberta Canada. I viewed their website and checked the ingredients. They are all sourced locally there and were described as human grade. No grains, with 70 percent meats (chicken, turkey, fish, eggs) and 30 percent fruit and vegetables. Their taurine is in guaranteed analysis and is from their local sourced high meat content and thus isn't avoids the concern associated with an imported supplement. Everything I've read thus far looks good concerning them. The prior brand lost my business because they didn't reply to my email query concerning their food. The local small pet food stores Brookside Barkery started carrying this brand after scrutinizing the new brand and being very responsive to my queries.

Dennis, if you look up in Dioxins/PCBs thread, you'll read ChampionFoods response to my inquiries. http://itchmoforums.com/news-recall-related/premixfeed-premix-contaminated-with-dioxin-like-pcbs-t1787.0.html;msg26019#msg26019Their vitamin premix supplier did have the Alltech copper sulfate in their premixes - they tested at EU levels (passed) and the dilution theories also kick in. So, some of the items in the premix are imported by their vitamin premix supplier/ - by others - i.e. not directly imported by Champion. I do feel they exercise due diligence, but in all things lately, asking is your best policy. They do get kudos for their response and the level of detail.
