I saw these two cat food products in Publix (Atlanta area) last nite:  1) Meow Mix "Wholesome Goodness" in a plastic tub; and,  2)  Friskies Indoor Selects canned (5.5 ounce).  The Friskies varieties contain wheat gluten and spinache.  The Meow Mix varieties have "cane sugar."  I have never seen cane sugar used in cat food.  Anyone have experience with either of these brands?  Why would Meow Mix use cane sugar?  I am also concerned about the use of spinache.

I wouldn't use either of those, considering the ingredients you shared. We know from experience what wheat gluten can do to cats. To answer your question about why they would do that ~ we've also learned that the pet food companies will do whatever they can get away with to save them a few bucks and make more of a profit. (There are some good companies out there, but many of them aren't so reliable.) If you are interested in finding foods for your cat, you can check the home page for your experiences with cat food by brand.

Very interesting, JudyM!

Personally, I would not feed any of my cats foods containing wheat gluten and/or spinach.  I had a cat with a dramatic reaction to eating a food containing both items on several occasions.  Don't know if it was just a coincidence or not, but after it happened several times, I will not knowingly feed those 2 items to any of my cats ever again.

I also would not feel comfortable feeding a food with added sugar.

I've fed the Meow Mix Market Selects off & on since they came out - I never had problems with them.

The Meow Mix Market Select Salmon & Crab didn't have gluten or sugar the last time I got them... have they changed???

That is one of Scooter's "if I'm not getting FF, I'll pretend I'm eating that" foods (and compared to the FF panel, I'd give her the market select any day.. & sugars?- she does get sugars in the NutriCal & Hi-Cal supplements)

I, too, noticed that the Meow Mix Selects varieties contain cane sugar, as does their new Wholesome Goodness varieties. I called the company to ask why. The representative really didn't have an answer for me other than "for added taste." I told her I was very unhappy about their use of cane sugar and how it could really be detrimental to diabetic cats. She said she would communicate my concerns to the appropriate individuals within the company, but I doubt that it made any difference.

It is so frustrating...people *really* have to carefully read the labels of these products and know what they are looking for!
