Last 2 cans of a case of Chicken Instinct wet (dog) 13.2 ounce. Rejected by 4 out of 10 cats. 041010 23CTM2 0219/0218 Hmmm.edited to add: Now that I checked my notes, the cats that rejected it today haven't been too crazy about this particular lot of food. And they were fed 4 hours late today, so they were hungry. I have another unopened case of the same lot. However, the other 6 cats had no problems eating it.

Well, Phil has been on the rabbit for about two and half weeks and still isn't too thrilled, he started trying to eat my roommates cats Friskies, which is not good for him. :-(. I feel like the pellets are too big for his liking. He picks up one at a time, and end up dropping it a lot and has to push it up against the wall off his food bowl for the leverage to get it into his mouth. I think the shape is also difficult for him to grasp. It's almost completely round, while his AvoDerm was more of a Y shape and easy to pick up. He does still like the rabbit wet food though and eats it with gusto, but I think i'll take him off the dry. he look miserable when he's trying to eat it. :-(

Just opened a can from a new case of NV Instinct Chicken Formula and found several small chunks of potato. Potato is not listed as an ingredient in this food. Bottom of the can looks like: 101509 23CTM3 1057 5CatMom =^..^ =

Oy. I was just packing up to go and buy a couple cases of this. Were they 5.5 or 12.5 oz cans?

Wow 5Cat, thanks for sharing this. I was just getting ready to order some different flavors to try on Sophers....once again..sigh. Im wondering if you considered sending a PM to Sandy, I think he was a manager of some sort and was here before when NV had prior problems and see if he is willing to talk about it and or at least look into it and perhaps post when he finds out what is going on? His member name was SMGMI.....just a thought instead of just calling NV. ETA: Just another thought is you might want to take a picture of the food to have on hand, its your decison if you want to post it or not but at least it might be good to have it just in case...

I would think a pm is worth a try. He did seem concerned & its good he's still checking. While the co may not have responded as well as we here would like, they did impliment some of our suggestions also. Plus they didn't deny any problems or threaten anyone.

I just did a quick check and I cant find that they use potato in any of the canned cat food except the Prairie Homestyle has potato starch......so where would this have come from? 5Cat I hate to ask this but are you sure its potato you are seeing? Or maybe its globs of potato starch from not being mixed thoroughly?

Any chance it could have been carrot? Sometimes those are pale looking if they are from the inner carrot.
M3: That looks like the code for a 5.5 ounce can. Best by: 10/15/09.

I wonder if this is "leftovers" from a previous run of another brand of food. I can't find any whole potato, just "potato starch," listed in any NV dog or cat foods on their website.
Where does NV can? Do their procedures specify complete cleanout before their product is run (like Wellness?)
This makes me upset. If they are changing their formula, or getting sloppy with quality control, I'll go ballistic. This was one of the few remaining foods that my cats were accepting consistently (see the thread on "Is there another big problem...") Suddenly all the cat foods seem to be changing, or getting messed up somehow. Why?
I was going to buy several cases today, to have a supply before the suspect chicken banned by Russia hit the pet food market. Now I don't know what to do. I will certainly try to avoid the 10/15/09 lot if I can. Well, maybe I'll try to find one or two cans from that specific date and close to that time (I suspect the 1057 is the time stamp, just like with Wellness.) If I can get any, I'll open them and see what I find.

I agree 5Cat and what also bothers me is where is potato coming from? Is it from potato starch, or is it actually lumps of potato as they are 2 diferent things from what I can tell. Where did they pick that up at, and where was their quality control and if its lumps of potato from potato starch where was the cleaning of equipment in between cans of Homestyle and cans of Instinct? And if its lumps of starch, are they not mixing the food real well or ?? NV is one of the better companies from everything Ive read, I hope you can get answers on what happened.

Thanks, 5CatMom, Guess I'm not the only taster. That's the only way to figure out what it is sometimes, to taste it. I'll look through my stored cans and see if I have any from that particular lot, but I use mainly the big dog food cans for my cats. Potato isn't the worst thing that could be in there, but if it's in the food, it needs to be listed as an ingredient on the label.
Of course, it shouldn't be in there. Edited: Checked my cans, nada.

I am pretty much certain that if they have added potato to Instinct (I hope not), most of my cats will refuse it. They hate potato in wet food.
Adding potato (cheaper) would be just the sort of thing I would expect of a PF company in a time of increasing food prices. And it would be possible with their good old "We think we have 6 months to change the label" mindset.
I really, really hope this is not what they have done.
Off to the pet food store soon. I'll let you all know what I find.
