I've been having problems with Merricks canned cat food. I only use the Turducken canned foods so I don't know if there is a problem with the other types. The cans I've received over the past 3 weeks are very soupy and smell rancid. I've contacted the company twice on 1/16/08 and 2/6/08 and all they offer are free coupons (which I have declined) and no explanation for the problem with their product.  The Batch numbers and best by dates are as follows:

Turducken:  07257CL2  018080943 Best by 14 SEP 10
                 07237CL2  018080938 Best  by 14 SEP 10

Has anybody else experienced this problem or know what may be causing it? The pet store said they also had cans of Thanksgiving Day Dinner returned for the same reasons. Thanks, Eda

I used Merrick for a while right after the recalls started, mostly the New England Boil I think it was called, anyway I quit using it way back then because the consistance was always different sometimes soupy, sometimes solid ,sometimes just right, and a lot of the times the cans were only half full.  The whole thing freaked me out.  I have not used any canned since May 07.  Totally people food and dry kibble since then.

I've tossed the empty cans by now, but the last time I went to feed turducken it looked weird, so I dumped it. Decided not to buy this flavor again. The only Merrick they seem to like now anyhow is the Southern Delight flavor. One more bad can and this brand is off our list entirely. This is in Massachusetts.

I used Merrick at the beginning of the PF recall, as an alternative to what I had been feeding. The cats would not touch it. The dogs got the runs.

What you are mentioning on this thread sounds like a lot has slipped through quality control. If you do a search on Itchmo, you'll find some lengthy threads on Merrick. Gareth Merrick also owns several rendering plants. The PF labels look like inviting human grade food, but I have my doubts.

Another thread to check out is "Pet Food: A Dog's Breakfast" (I think there are three of them) about what goes into pet food. In the CBC documentary, a vet showed how to mix a concoction of old workboots, crankcase oil, and wood shavings, and still come up with something that met the minimum nutrition standards for protein, fat and carbs.

Not saying Merrick makes food like that! But ... well, read the Itchmo threads.
